Anyone seen this? It’s apparently based on a policy from (far right) Hungary where the media were saying that too many women were going to university and thus wouldn’t be having kids!

I did then expand on that, and referenced an idea (read: not one you explicitly stated but that does indeed tie in) that certainly has been voiced, that women have a duty to reproduce for the good of the country

No, you tied that idea in to what I said. It doesn't 'tie in' remotely with my actual words. I was talking about evolution (I clarified this more than once) and you decided that I am some kind of monster who thinks women should be forced to have babies and went on and on about fascism as though that's remotely what I was saying. Fucking sick of people like you. Try having some integrity.

Your words, that I replied to, are right there. Yes, they do tie in, with the word ‘purpose’. I did not state that tax breaks were fascist, I stated that incentivizing breeding as a woman’s purpose or patriotic duty are fascist ideas. They are. I even provided examples from recent history.

Evolution has no purpose. It simply is. Same as gravity. Purpose is something human being ascribe.

if you’re sick of me, or ‘people like me’ then by all means do not engage. You are not, in fact, obliged to.

beastlyslumber · 11/10/2022 01:51

It was clear what I was talking about but you saw a word you could use to pretend I'd said something I hadn't, and then create a strawman so you could knock it down. Then tell me if I don't like it, I shouldn't even engage in the conversation. Gaslighting bullshit.

Like I said, try having some integrity.

You are a far right conspiracy theorist and your views should not be normalised on fucking Mumsnet. End of.

balalake · 11/10/2022 07:17

The only government in the EU that seems worse than the recent UK government is Hungary's. This adds to it.

Why do you think I'm

  1. far right?
  2. a conspiracy theorist?

Honestly these are such lazy terms that mean very little anymore. Don't agree with a statement? Must be far right. Didn't understand content of what was being asked? Must be a conspiracy theorist...🤨

“You’re aware it’s not compulsory, yes?”

but @YellowTreeHouse its the whole rhetoric isn’t it- ‘pay women to breed more so that we don’t have to rely on those pesky immigrants’

It’s disgusting on multiple levels and yes, reeks of the Handmaids tale too

Hate to break it to you, but thats all every living being on the planet is here to do, replicate, then die. Circle of life. You might not like it, but it is what it is.

I've chosen not to have children. Does that mean my existence is pointless?

boobot1 · 11/10/2022 09:28

Thats up to you, obviously, but ultimately, what I said is correct, of course we all contribute in other ways, not saying we don't, look at Issac Newton. He never married or had children, but made amazing contributions. It still doesn't change the reality that these are the biological facts of every living thing. We live,we grow, we reproduce, we die.

Well, not quite. ‘Here to do’ suggests design, purpose as opposed to random chance. Although we do of course all reproduce, whether we have children or not.

it’s also infinitely more complicated than that anyway, not least because of natural variation and our ability to reason. Some other species of animal practice abortion and infanticide, their actions determined by their environment. Human beings, for as long as we have existed, have done the same. The lack of desire to have children doesn’t come from outside of ourselves either, all behaviours we exhibit reflect our individual chemistries and their interplay with our environments.
