Husband won’t turn the heating on, but goes on a massive night out

Cost of living crisis, soaring energy bills..you know the score. DH is very much of the “put on another jumper” type (ps I’m already wearing one, thick socks and slippers in the house, on occasion a jacket), all on the pretence that we need to be cautious with bills etc. but I feel like this is the only area of his life he is frugal with, meanwhile he pays for rounds of drinks after work, going out for lunch everyday when working in the office, whilst I suppose my work doesn’t have that culture. I suppose my argument is, well maybe if you didn’t spend all that money on beers/took a pack lunch to work every once in a while then we could put the heating on, so that I’m not sitting working from home with a hot water bottle. Please feel free to tell me I am being unreasonable but I just don’t feel we are aligned on the financial priorities….what do I do?

Do you not know how the thermostat works?

Turn it on yourself!

So do I. I haven't put the heating on. I never do until end of October and never have heating in bedrooms.

whynotwhatknot · 08/10/2022 18:04

Benjieandjacksmum · 08/10/2022 18:10

Depends where you live surely! In not so sunny Cumbria today it's fresh and bright with a wind that would sort out the energy crisis if we could only harness it. Heating has been on low most of the day even the dog's refusing to play in the garden.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 08/10/2022 18:12

According to the not switched temperature gauge my house is 17.2C. I've got layers on and fingerless gloves. I can afford to put the heating on but there masses of other things I'd prefer to spend money on.

As recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), UK households should have a room temperature in winter of around 18°C.

Put it on and tell him to get fucked

I've had enough recently of *men deciding what the fuck everyone else has to put up with

They can fuck the fuck off and then keep going

That counts for my own DH right now

Yes Joint account is the only way to go. Each pay in a percentage of your earnings and then get Debit Cards for that account. You buy shopping, clothes for kids, childcare fees, heating bills, electricity bills etc all on the Joint Account Card.
Your own clothes, lunches etc can come from your own accounts.
That way the bills are always covered and are visible to both of you.

Ginger1982 · 08/10/2022 18:34

I'm in Scotland with the heating on at various points. If my DH told me not to put it on I would still put it on 🤷🏼‍♀️

LemonPledge555 · 08/10/2022 18:40

I get freezing WFH, the room I work it’s has two external walls and is north facing and gets very little sun. Plus I’m sat at a desk not moving.

I tend to have a candle on (generates a fair bit of heat) and also a fan heater that goes on for 10-20 minute bursts. That was I’m only heating the room in I’m (door closed) rather than the whole house.

Re household budget, we both have similar disposable, I work 10 hrs a week and look after the house and do most stuff with DC. He works FT and I support him in a big job. He can do what he wants with his money. I would be v v pissed off if DH was eating out 5 lunches a week and at then out at the pub and then moaning about putting the heating on.

I don't understand the mentality of not putting heating on befoya certain date or month. It's illogical. If the beginning of October had a freezing spell your sit in your freezing house going "nope, no heating yet it's not the end of October". So miserable.

And I'm in Scotland and I've had the heating on for a week. Do you not understand temperatures in Scotland vary too?

Fingerless gloves. Honestly this has to be a joke. You'd rather spend money on fingerless gloves than put the heating on.
Also, 18 Deg still feels cold and just because the WHO say that, doesn't mean you have to. It's not law. Mine is set to 19.5 sometimes 20 😇 but none of this matters. The fact is OP wants the heating on and her husband is being a prick.

ConsuelaHammock · 08/10/2022 18:57

Put the heating on! My husband used to complain about me using the tumble drier. I told him he was welcome to take over the laundry duties. I use the tumble drier.

Fingerless gloves, indeed! They must have cost a fortune and no mistake.

How the other half live, eh?

Why does it offend you so badly that she doesn't put the heating on? Surely she's allowed to share her perspective and opinion, even though it differs from yours? Halo

quitelikelyto · 08/10/2022 15:27

@JudgeJ gosh it's almost like people in different areas have different weather. Incredible isn't it 🙄 not to mention different rooms, house types, angle relative to the sun etc.

Yes deary, that's why I was asking in what part of the country the OP resided, indeed conditions vary, who'd have thunk it!

is there something stopping you putting it on @Willywonkamum ? is the control in a locked room?

It doesn't offend me and I don't give a hoot what she does. It's the fact she comes on trying to say the IP is wrong for even wanting heating on because she is cold. She's saying op should be. Wearing layers and fingerless gloves and should be just as warm as her.
It doesn't work like that.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/10/2022 19:36

Sorry for mispellings and grammar, Im holding a sleeping baby!

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 08/10/2022 19:48

My goodness what bizarre comments. I've always taken the attitude of put more clothes on, not put on the heating. Not sure why that offends so many of you or why you think the rude comments were justified.

Up to you of course, carry on not caring a fig about global warming and I hope you're looking forward to your sky high energy bills.

namechange3394 · 08/10/2022 19:58

Willywonkamum · 08/10/2022 13:46

Question for those living with partners/families. How does everyone do a family budget? I wonder if we need to create a joint account for all shared bills, mortgage, nursery fees etc and each pay the same in monthly? Or say 75% of our monthly earnings each. We both have good jobs (he earns a fair bit more.) possibly that might help for my growing feelings of resentment….

I assume you have DCs?

Why on earth would you put in the same monthly if he earns a lot more? Put everything in the joint account and then budget for you each to get the same personal spending money. His drinks after work come out of that.

Thing is, your comments are bizarre because they have fuck all to do with this thread.

OP's DH begrudges the family spending money on something that would make OP more comfortable, while happy to piss undoubtedly more money up the wall on lunches out and drinks. It's irrelevant that it's heating - it could be anything. It's the DH's attitude that is the problem here.
