those who are saying they hate Ocado now because of M&S may I know why? I don’t find Waitrose to be any better. I feel quality is not as it was , but people still shop there because it’s supposed to be the best but it’s not.

It's more expensive and there is nowhere near the range of products

But Ocado has so much more than M&S/Waitrose own brand.

For example, if you look at tinned tomatoes, they have 87 different versions, from 20 brands. How much choice do you need?

CeeJay81 · 05/10/2022 07:11

Well I was curious about Ocado but it doesn't exist where I live and it sounds like I wouldn't be able to afford it often anyway.

They dropped a lot those ranges when m &s came. The only cheap tins they do are the m &s brand if they are in stock.
Something also happened to their search engine as it is dreadful now.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/10/2022 07:29

But they're still showing on the website?

I've only ordered from Ocado once, there seems to be an overwhelming amount of choice and you can get some quite decent value stuff - not all of M&S is expensive, they do some very good value basics, they have good offers and introductory discounts, and I was offered what appeared to be the online version of yellow stickers when I checked out.

I looks to me like it can be well priced if you're very careful, but at the same time a good place to find more unusual items, but then there's a risk that you're dragged into the realms of 'the sky is the limit' when it comes to pricing.

@ThrowingSomeCrumbs
they have lunch at school and we have one take away a week. Cereal and toast for breakfast for the kids. Yoghurt for me and a breakfast bar for partner. Meal plan every meal. Not helped by half the house being vegetarian! This week is:
Burger, skinny fries and homemade coleslaw.
Chicken / halloumi tacos.
Spaghetti and tomato sauce with mozzarella
pie, mashed carrot and mashed potato
tofu & vegetable egg fried rice
nachos, home made guacamole and refried beans

So you’re not just spending £80 a week on food because you’re not factoring in the cost of school meals and your takeaways.

We were having this discussion at work the other day. People who were claiming to spend low amounts on food were actually still buying lunch each day and/or having a takeaway/meals out , so if you added those costs in, their food bills were the same (or higher) than those spending more in their food shop who brought their lunch with them and didn’t have takeaways/meals out regularly.

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 05/10/2022 07:49

I wasn't giving some exact comparison. It was just a comment on how much I spent. And it obviously includes non food items needed. And includes lunches for me and partner. And weekend lunches. And the many many snacks growing sons eat!! **

Flyinggeesei234 · 05/10/2022 07:51

@LadyPenelope68 I thought the poster was stating amount spent with the supermarket. This thread is not about food budget overall.

Flyinggeesei234 · 05/10/2022 07:51

Apologies @ThrowingSomeCrumbs you’ve answered too!

Yes this really gets me going because it's not accurate at all
Can't believe the partner only eats a bar
My husband eats two weetabix two coffees and a tea at least before work and then usually some sort of breakfast bar for a snack as he leaves
He often comes in for lunch and eats something like the leftovers or pizza or eggs or bacon or salmon sandwiches
Then a big dinner
Eats crisps and sweets in evening

Kids eat heaps of yoghurts cereal toast crumpets and so so so so much fruit
I spend a fortune on fruit every week

My children also have a snack when they come in from school or nursery (I pay nursery lunch, that is £3.50) and then they also have dinner and snack before bed

Both boys are skinny as a rake but strong

My husband is very tall at 6ft 3 and is also very strong and dense so I can't see how I could fill them up with protein for £80

I'm amazed and impressed but the takeaway aspect negates the low cost of your weekly shop

350 week on food shopping? God that’s a disgrace. Why post that when folk are struggling. What do yous buy??

WhiteFire · 05/10/2022 08:08

I will do an Ocado shop occasionally, usually when they send some tempting offer. I don't find it particularly expensive but I eat a fairly basic diet and therefore not tempted by any fancy stuff.

Main shop is Sainsbury's, I change my sub choices, there are some things we won't eat the alternative so just uncheck for a sub to be provided.

People do get weird about food though, and if anything it is usually reverse snobbery especially about how the Lidl shop costs £40 that would have cost £120 elsewhere.

Runningintolife · 05/10/2022 08:08

Morrisons uses the same app and vans as Ocado, cheaper with less ranges.

LadyPenelope68 · 05/10/2022 08:12

@Flyinggeesei234
but it is really about overall budget, as there are posts saying “how on earth do people spend so much on your weekly shop” but if the poster with a higher weekly shop doesn’t eat out/eat takeaways/sends packed lunches every day, then their bill IS going to be way higher than that of a family whose children have school meals/don’t eat a proper breakfast/have takeaways. You’re not comparing like for like otherwise.

Yes, some people are struggling, others not so much, some not at all.

People are still allowed to discuss their shopping habits, it doesn't have to just be the £40 Lidl shops.

Chocciebiscuit · 05/10/2022 08:13

Have not read whole thread but I am not loyal but mostly use morrisons online which comes from a depo in my case not store picked & its delivered in same way as ocado. I use Ocado when want extra things I cannot get, in your case it would be higher welfare meat/better quality fruit veg.

I would use a combination of retailers then you can maximise offers too, use the trolley app for supermarket price comparisons & remember they are more likely to give you money off codes if you are infrequent shopping.

Also consider buying basics at one supermarket & sourcing meat elsewhere in bulk eg pipers farm for higher welfare but not cheap & use less. Also ocado searching through top offers, buying meat whole not chopped so whole chicken, joint etc
Hopefully some of the above is vaguely helpful!

So only people struggling can have a conversation now?

skedaddler · 05/10/2022 08:19

I've also switched from Ocado to asda. It's soooo much cheaper ! But I tend to get Ocado every 2-3 weeks still because they don't do the dog food we have and there are other bits (like oj) that we don't find as good with asda.

I get my fruit and veg from a greengrocer now which is tons cheaper and way better quality. I'm also going to try a butchers for chicken this week as the quality of that is also bad at all the supermarkets .

Flubadubba · 05/10/2022 08:19

Morrisons use the same drivers and back end. Just saying...

Swearwolf · 05/10/2022 08:20

Have you tried Morrisons? I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but here, ocado and morrisons share a depot, trucks and drivers. We don't have a shop anywhere nearby but it comes from the ocado warehouse down the road. Prices are more in line with Asda etc. but the service and website are very similar to ocado.

Tiredpigeon · 05/10/2022 08:34

After many, many faithful years, I switched to weekly Aldi trips and two weekly Ocado for stuff Aldi don't stock (like rinse aid and branded cat litter). It's so much cheaper at Aldi (about a third cheaper) and the quality is generally very good. I tended to get a lot of Ocado own brand though, rather than M&S. I have to admit I do miss the ease of online ordering but it's worth it for the savings.

This is really interesting
Maybe I need to stop browsing all the new stuff and try it again
What do you typically get
I get free range and organic a lot of products and branded crisps etc I do think it makes the price high on Ocado
But I bloody miss them and the convenience of them
I've got a horribly damaged back and I go to Asda and sainos myself because I don't trust them for subs and I have to yank the massive trolley with minimum of two kids with me too. It takes fucking hours

I would be interested to see what you get for £80 maybe I should try again

Asda, Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose all deliver. Its no more necessary to "yank a massive trolley" now than it was with Ocado. Why are you not getting deliveries from Asda?

I started using Ocado when they first became Waitrose's delivery partner. Lots of things I like about the service but since they split from Waitrose I think its less good frankly and more expensive - I alternate with Waitrose. Ocado's packing has always been dire but their stock availability management is good.

I find their fruit and veg ok but their organics are a lot more expensive and no better than most organic box schemes. Natoora's fruit and veg is ridiculously overpriced for the quality.

Ocado do a number of small ranges which are harder to get from other supermarkets and would miss, overall I don't think its better than Waitrose at a similar price point.

I do find the cult like adoration of Ocado weird - they are a premium priced supermarket and provide premium price products accordingly.

Heathershimmerwasmyshade · 05/10/2022 08:39

AriettyHomily
no by all means chat amongst yourselves all you like. But anonymous forum and all that. You have your options and I’ll have mine. That’s basically what folk do on here. Get it??

Heathershimmerwasmyshade · 05/10/2022 08:40

That goes for WeRateSquirrels too

C8H10N4O2 · 05/10/2022 08:40

Oh and the point on Ocado charging a premium for substitutions means I automatically send them back! They are the only delivery service I know which does this.
