I miss the waitrose partnership, but we have a local one I do a pay day Sunday shop in to scratch my new and exotic ingredients itch!

Otherwise, my weekly meal plan and ocado shop aren't letting me down, really good dates on meat and veg, very rare substitutions and they are bang on when they do.

Not mentioned yet, but the delivery drivers are fantastic, mostly very cheerful, and quick but not throwing food at you, the vehicles look clean and maintained, it's a really good efficient experience all round.

Shiboleth1 · 04/10/2022 12:49

Bit ironic calling me abrasive. If anyone is being abrasive it's you! And my day is just fine, thanks 😊

Kissingfrogs25 · 04/10/2022 12:51

I miss waitrose with ocado - can't be beaten. M&S is okay but not as good in my opinion. Especially the organic and duchy range simply isn't there.

Floydthebarber · 04/10/2022 12:54

Oh I do miss Waitrose on Ocado! M&S just isn't as good and they don't have a lot of things that they do have in their actual stores.

But I find Ocado really useful for tracking my shopping spend. I don't really buy branded things and have a basic list I use every week, switching eg on offer chopped tomatoes. I sometimes spend just over the minimum of £40 and then get other stuff from Aldi or sainsburys during the week. I find online shopping really helps me stick to my list.

paulmccartneysbagel · 04/10/2022 12:58

I do Ocado once a month for the things that I can't find anywhere else, and for 'normal' day to day things that are no more expensive. I basically get as much as I can from there because their customer service is so much better than anywhere else.

yoshiblue · 04/10/2022 13:03

Have you double checked Ocado prices? I know a friend of a friend who was responsible for pricing the M&S own brand items. Basmati rice is exactly the same price as Tesco/Sainsburys for example.

I do think some things are a little more expensive, but it is worth it for long dates, fresher fruit/veg, chicken thighs better than any other supermarket and actually cheaper than Sainsburys. The fruit/veg/meat in Asda is poor.

Highamite · 04/10/2022 13:08

I have tried to wean myself off Ocado but with no success. I can go 2 weeks max before I cave. I occasionally venture to lidl for stroopwaffles, crisps and the fake snickers. Also I used to love their washing up liquid but I haven't seen it in ages. Yes Ocado is more expensive but if I meal plan properly then not so much. Plus the app is comforting. There I said it

BarryK3nt · 04/10/2022 13:10

That’s a ridiculous amount to spend, you must be huge.

MuddlerInLaw · 04/10/2022 13:11

This thread is making me feel food snobbery is something people have to get over. It's food. You can buy it anywhere and you don't have to pay a premium because it has a fancy label on it.

The thing is, on an anonymous forum, we none of us have the full picture of another poster’s life.

If you’re fit and healthy with three small children and a Lidl ten minutes walk away then perhaps shaving every penny off your grocery budget is the ultimate priority.

If on the other hand you‘re unwell or have restricted mobility or live somewhere difficult to deliver to - then convenience and reliability of delivery might take precedence. Sainsbury’s being 20% cheaper isn’t much use if they’ll only deliver to the ground floor and decline to carry stuff up several flights of stairs. If Ocado will do that, without fuss, that’s who you’ll choose.

And that first family might have lots and lots of sources of entertainment and fun - whereas someone who lives alone and maybe doesn’t get out much might prioritise an element of luxury in their food.

It’s not all black and white - and it seems a shame that people would join a thread on something as fundamental as food shopping in order to mock other people’s experience of life.

Tootels · 04/10/2022 13:14

I can't even afford Asda

Avidreader69 · 04/10/2022 13:15

I spend around £80 a week for a family of 4
That works out at a little over £2.85 per person per day. What are you feeding them?

cultkid · 04/10/2022 13:15

@MuddlerInLaw

Thank you for this you've articulated it a lot better then I could. I feel hounded off of my own thread. I don't think people have been very nice.

For the record @BarryK3nt I'm 47kg, how much do you weigh?

Why is it good snobbery and not just a preference though? And why is it something people need to get over?

Should we all just eat plain rice and beans because anything else is unnecessary and therefore snobby?

Is it snobby if you don’t exclusively shop at primark?

GottaGetOutofDairy · 04/10/2022 10:47

This for me, too.

I really miss the Waitrose stuff and would switch in heart beat, except we're all now used to the app etc.

It’s an issue. A small issue, but I hear you. I left Ocado, having been with them from the get go, and starting doing actual shopping in waitrose. Now I have had to defect to Aldi, and I feel it. What I miss most is being able to just yell at Alexa to order stuff (one of the big reasons I got Alexa in the first place.)

I really hate how poverty removes not only luxury from your life, but any vestige of ease and convenience. Grumble grumble grumble. Yes, there have been other hard choices, and actual hardships, too. It doesn’t mean this is not also less than we had)

I know right 🥹 it's the best and I miss it and I'm allowed to miss it!!

The app rocks. Going to try it a different way around as per some of the other really helpful suggestions including the poster who mentioned not trying to curb it all over night.

Food is our hobby I've mentioned this in an earlier post. I don't even need to justify it but I'm apparently a snob, a boaster, sick and fat? Wtf has that got to do with a food shop?

So so insulting but I don't know why I feel affected by it.

If it's any consolation, the quality of fruit and veg seems to be much worse with Ocado now. Actually, I think that is true of everywhere, prices have gone up and quality has gone down. They also keep getting rid of all my favourites 😠

The minimum order is only £40. Why don't you split your shop between Asda and Ocado?

fleurdelee · 04/10/2022 13:19

Mardyface · 04/10/2022 10:50

You don't have to get everything from one place do you. You could order the stuff you really love from Ocado and the rest from Asda.

I went off Ocado when they teamed up with M&S though. And I never rated their fruit/veg.

Yes. We were loyal shoppers for ? 13/14 years, maybe more. Was a life saver when we had new baby twins
But economics meant we had to give it up.
Don't really miss much. Now we click and collect at Tesco
It is much cheaper

fleurdelee · 04/10/2022 13:19

I still occasionally, maybe twice a month pop into waitrose and buy the few bits I miss
From there

This makes me feel better

I miss the fruit a LOT and the vegetables A LOT.

Glad to hear it's not as amazing as I've really pined for them in soup season!

Yamalt · 04/10/2022 13:21

M&S at Ocado has really killed my use of them now. The own brand M&S quality is not as good as Waitrose and is more expensive.

Depots the Ocado all being MUCH better I’ve moved to using Waitrose now and am saving about £25-35 per week on my weekly shop.

Chanttotheprince · 04/10/2022 13:22

I swapped from ocado to Sainsburys. The big downside is lots more substitutions and missing items but there is more choice and less cost. Every now and then I might do an ocado top up for certain bits

cultkid · 04/10/2022 13:22

I've also noticed we have been having takeout a few times a month whereas we didn't before. It feels like a bit of a false economy. The takeaways are never ever as good as I hope they are and if it's £30 which is about right often a bit more with the kids if I don't do them a quick pasta or so, then I've not saved the money have I? Blush
Going to chat to my husband this evening

I just use Tesco online for the everyday branded stuff which is the bulk of my shopping and then get top up shops from Waitrose and M&S, I have used Ocado but didn't like the website and delivery was quite expensive, I use my Clubcard points for Tesco delivery

MuddlerInLaw · 04/10/2022 13:30

Oh God yes … It feels like home - and every other online grocer’s site feels unsatisfactory. I’m sure if I’d been using, I dunno, Tesco online for a decade I’d feel the same about them. But Ocado knows all my little quirks.

Speaking of which, I’m sure it must be nearly time for my free anniversary bottle of wine. Please say they haven’t ditched that?

TheVanguardSix · 04/10/2022 13:32

You'll have to pry my Ocado Love from my cold, dead hands. I may end up barely affording my burnt-out oil drum for a dwelling, but Jesus in the Cabbage Van will still show up with my groceries.

And it's true, I dabble in Lidl. But Ocado is my food shop ride or die 4lyf.
