Basically that?
I understand a lot of people have just stopped paying.

I didn't pay when I didn't have a TV and didn't watch live services. The TV license inspector came round and asked to do an inspection, I said sure no problem and he came in for a look round (to see if he could see a TV I guess). I explained I was doing an MSc whilst working full time so only studied and didn't watch TV. Unfortunately (for him) this was backed up as there were a lot of Open University on the floor and he slipped over when he accidentally trod on one on the way out! Never heard from them again.

You know you could just have ignored him don't you ,?
They have no rights to enter your property, just don't engage..

Pilipalapal · 03/10/2022 18:55

I’ve emigrated but had stopped paying for a tv license so time before doing so, because I didn’t watch live tv.

However, I do think the BBC is an excellent news source and public good. It probably does need modernizing and slim-lining as an entertainment provider, but I wouldn’t like to see it go subscription-only.

To ask if you have stopped paying your TV Licence?
Florenz · 03/10/2022 18:59

I think before long the number of people paying will drop so low that something will have to be done. It's just stupid to require a license to watch TV in this day and age. And stupid to have the BBC supported in this way, it means they don't have to try to compete with the other providers as their income is guaranteed whereas the other providers have to put out quality programming if they want people to pay for it.

Pilipalapal · 03/10/2022 19:01

Beees · 03/10/2022 14:50

200+ letters is surely borderline harassment? How much of the licence fee must they spend on such stupid methods of enforcement for something you're not actually required to have.

@Adelant is required to have a license though.

ZooTropia · 03/10/2022 19:04

EmmaH2022 · 03/10/2022 11:42

I haven't "just stopped paying". I filled in the declaration form and they send a confirmation you don't need a licence.

Hi @EmmaH2022 could you tell me like a 5 year old exactly what to do about cancelling and getting a form please?
Also, what am I not allowed to do/watch after this??

Beees · 03/10/2022 19:04

@Adelant is required to have a license though.

This 1 poster might be but that doesn't mean the other people they send copious amounts of letters to or send 'enforcement' inspectors to are.

They must spend a huge amount of the revenue they make on people checking up on others at home and sending sack fulls of threatening letters.

Adelant · 03/10/2022 19:05

I am but I justify it to myself that I never watch BBC content. Yes, I know that’s no excuse. But I’ve saved £1,300 over the past few years.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 03/10/2022 19:05

Yes.
I use the BBC everyday. Radio, news, bbc sounds, iplayer.Rarely watch live. I appreciate the the fee isn't levied in radio/news/website but that's what the license fee also pays for.

Bovrilly · 03/10/2022 19:06

They wouldn't need to do this if it weren't for people like those on this thread who are using the services without paying.

AirFryerNinja · 03/10/2022 19:06

@VeryQuaintIrene You can watch it via a proxy VPN, that's what I do.

It's Archaic isn't it
It made sense when there were just three channels but they are clinging onto a system that just doesn't work
At least they don't come out with all that nonsense about detector vans anymore though!

Beees · 03/10/2022 19:10

They wouldn't need to do this if it weren't for people like those on this thread who are using the services without paying.

This is a daft argument. The amount of people being caught watching it without paying has been steadily declining. Even if all 50,000 people who had been caught last year paid £1000 its nowhere near what they have spent on trying to catch people.

If they made it a proper an opt in service like netflix or other streaming services then people wouldn't be able to access it without paying and so there would be no need for threatening letter or enforcement inspectors.

With or without a license fee? Wink

TheSimpleLife88 · 03/10/2022 19:15

I still pay it, but do think it needs reforming now. Maybe a subscription service just for catch-up and that can then fund the live TV.
I don't understand how people don't watch any live TV ever. What about the news? What about when the queen died and the funeral - how did people watch it? What about live football, Olympics etc? I'm genuinely curious. I can't imagine never watching the news or live sports.

This might blow your mind but I didn't watch the Queen's funeral 😱

Adelant · 03/10/2022 19:21

The news is depressing and I’m
not sporty.

user16480478 · 03/10/2022 19:22

If you don't use something it's silly paying for it, we pay as we use it and all the streaming services as well, I don't think DS pays though as he rarely watches much TV and just had Netflix

user16480478 · 03/10/2022 19:23

You could watch the queens funeral without a licence

I literally do not care about sports at all. Listened to the Queen coverage on the radio. News from newspapers.

MargeSampson · 03/10/2022 19:25

I don't have a TV licence. Don't watch it. Waste of money.

Bagzzz · 03/10/2022 19:25

I do and value BBC tv and radio.

I mainly read, rather than watch news, although I do watch some news content on YouTube.

Didn’t watch the Queen’s funeral, don’t watch the Olympics and only watch live football occasionally, in pubs.

Atmywitsend29 · 03/10/2022 19:26

We pay for it at the moment as DH is watching stuff on iPlayer.

Frankly I can't wait to cancel it. We don't watch live TV, we stream stuff (Disney +).

Indeed you did not need a TV licence to watch the funeral if you desired to do so.
