Basically that?
I understand a lot of people have just stopped paying.

Imagine getting locked in prison for not subscribing to Sky or Netflix.

You can't be sent to prison for non-payment of the licence fee. You can be sent to prison for non-payment of a court ordered fine, but this is such a last resort that it happened to a sum total of 0 people in 2020 and 2021. So that's one thing you don't need to worry about.

Bovrilly · 03/10/2022 15:00

Love the idea that sending letters to people who admit to watching live tv without a licence is harassment - think you may have the goodies and baddies the wrong way round in that story.

Adelant · 03/10/2022 15:01

In 2017, 30% of all criminal prosecutions, of any kind, against women were for non-payment of the TV licence.

I don’t watch any live TV but I do pay it just to give myself the option of watching things in BBC iPlayer from time to time. I listen to R4 daily, although some of their coverage is a bit annoying. To be honest, I am not British so I find the TV licence concept quite odd.

It’s not just a British thing. You have to pay a licence in Germany as well for example but you can’t really get out of it there.

fullfact.org/news/liz-truss-tv-licence-prison/

Gives a more detailed version of TV licence prosecution.

I think DC when they leave home will be fine with you tube and possible a few paid on-line services - I don't think they are as bothered by live TV. So I do think there's been a cultural shift that doesn't bode well for BBC funding.

xogossipgirlxo · 03/10/2022 15:13

I stopped paying ages ago. In 2019. I don't watch telly, so didn't need it.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 03/10/2022 15:15

I pay

TimBoothseyes · 03/10/2022 15:52

I pay mine...I don't have netflix, prime or any other subscription service. Some of the licence fee also pays for BBC radio services as well as other parts of the BBC.

TammyOne · 03/10/2022 16:53

there's too many choices on streamed TV. Some of the documentaries are good but I don't have the patience to plug in the digibox (cables and faff) and choose from a huge list. Whereas a bbc2, 4 or ch4 documentary at 9pm will do me fine.

Same Meglet. I have to think and make decisions all day, I can’t be doing with endless choices in the evenings! Also, I tend to stick the telly on and end up watching things ( and enjoying) things that are out of my “algorithm “ and I think that’s good for me, it keeps my mind a bit more open. I also like sitting down to watch Stricly or Call the Midwife and knowing that loads of other people are doing the exact same on a Saturday/ Sunday night, it makes me feel sort of connected. I’m sure I am v old fashioned!

gogohmm · 03/10/2022 17:07

No because the best tv is on terrestrial tv

KimberleyClark · 03/10/2022 17:11

No because we use Iplayer a fair bit, want the option to watch live sport, news etc.

gogohmm · 03/10/2022 17:12

I rarely watch live tv though, but we record things on the sky box to watch at our convenience. I have Netflix too but can't remember when I last watched anything Blush

KeepOutingMyselfAnotherNameChange · 03/10/2022 17:16

Yes I cancelled mine ages ago and got a refund as I was in credit. Waste of money for me.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 03/10/2022 17:19

About 2 weeks ago, I did fill out the cancellation thing though because I'm hoping it stops the aggressive little bastards coming round the house

KeepOutingMyselfAnotherNameChange · 03/10/2022 17:21

Adelant · 03/10/2022 14:58

Yes, we hate the red envelopes. Not only do we not pay the TV license (even though we watch live TV), we are costing them money in letters. I have thought about telling them we don’t watch live TV, but I think that would awaken a sleeping monster.

I contacted them years ago to declare I did not need one and have never received a letter from them since. The people saying they are being harassed just need to inform them you do not need one.

TartanGirl1 · 03/10/2022 17:22

We don't pay.

Notplayingball · 03/10/2022 17:25

We cancelled our licence in June. We couldn't justify paying it. Hardly watched live TV.

OriginalUsername3 · 03/10/2022 17:27

I declared I didn't need it. Then I told the man that turned up I didn't need it. Ignored the three letters threatening prosecution. Ignored the two men trying to enter my home to check I'm not watching live TV. They're a fucking abomination. I pay for netflix and amazon prime (although only really for the delivery) I don't watch live TV. But I do watch lots of BBC content, they sell loads to Netflix.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 03/10/2022 17:46

Yup, I don’t have a tv package, only broadband and we don’t watch anything live, we just use Netflix.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 03/10/2022 17:53

Oh we also don’t listen to the radio and use playlists on our phones instead.

DeeCeeCherry · 03/10/2022 17:56

I opted out years ago. Filled in online form on their site, took 2 minutes. I dont miss not watching BBC. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime, and can watch ITV/C4 'catch up'. I rarely watch TV anyway but still, there are so many channels and options now I can't even see the point of having a TV licence. I dont want any unnecessary expense.

TammyOne · 03/10/2022 13:00

I pay ( although I think it’s a lot) because I listen to bbc radio and watch lots of live news, and also watch i player more than anything else. I have had Netflix in the past to watch something specific ( The Crown ) but I find BBC have the best programming. If you only have Netflix/ Amazon etc do you never watch news or current affairs programmes?

Nope, I read the newspaper articles that pop up on my phone time to time but I’ve never been one to keep up with the news.

Technically you do need a license to watch ITV/C4 catch-up. But in reality, they will never check.

TokyoTen · 03/10/2022 18:34

I didn't pay when I didn't have a TV and didn't watch live services. The TV license inspector came round and asked to do an inspection, I said sure no problem and he came in for a look round (to see if he could see a TV I guess). I explained I was doing an MSc whilst working full time so only studied and didn't watch TV. Unfortunately (for him) this was backed up as there were a lot of Open University on the floor and he slipped over when he accidentally trod on one on the way out! Never heard from them again.

LidlCinnamonBun · 03/10/2022 18:52

I watch bbc sometimes and I have never paid the license fee.
