Basically that?
I understand a lot of people have just stopped paying.

@Pineappleflowers

It has failed to report critically on Covid and Brexit and I thought the non-stop Queen's death coverage was over the top.
I am also not paying for the salaries of client journalists like Laura Kuenssberg who propped up the corrupt Johnson government.
It is sad in a way as I used to respect the BBC so much but they have done themselves incredible damage.

Exactly this. Independent studies have also found that on several issues in recent years, the BBC news coverage was to the right of all its peers, including Sky News. Some people seem to bizarrely think that because the BBC champions racial diversity/representation and some “woke” issues, that makes them left wing. The claims makes as much sense as saying that the Tories are left wing as they supported gay marriage and now have a fairly racially diverse cabinet.

It's almost as if the world doesn't fit on a straightforward left-right axis.

'Stopping paying' makes it sound like you are making a statement / trying to get round things.

'No longer needing a TV license' would be more accurate.

We don't use streaming services, watch a lot of live TV, and listen to Radio4. I'm very happy to pay our license fee as I suspect it's cheaper than forking out for netflix or whatever.

This... You're implying that simply not paying for a TV licence is akin to not paying for your shopping!

We got rid of our TV licence years ago. Quite happy with Netflix, Prime and YouTube and not funding the bias BBC and the inflated egos and salaries of it's presenters!

MarshaBradyo · 03/10/2022 14:04

We pay. I don’t actually watch much BBC at all but rely on radio stations radio 4 and 6

megletthesecond · 03/10/2022 14:08

late there's too many choices on streamed TV. Some of the documentaries are good but I don't have the patience to plug in the digibox (cables and faff) and choose from a huge list. Whereas a bbc2, 4 or ch4 documentary at 9pm will do me fine.

Phos · 03/10/2022 14:16

BitOutOfPractice · 03/10/2022 13:41

I feel so worried about what will happen to bbc radio going forward

Oh yeah I forgot about radio, I listen to R2 all the time.

Kindofcrunchy · 03/10/2022 14:17

Haven't had a license in 5 years. It's all royalist, repetitive rubbish and completely outdated.

Fair enough! I didn't think of a digibox as I thought you had to have a digital TV now even to watch terrestrial TV via freeview so assumed you need to log on in the same way whether you are watching bbc or netflix or whatever.

I have to admit I find the idea of watching something just because it happens to be on at 9pm rather than choosing something I actually want to watch bizarre, but everyone's different!

You do know you don't need a TV licence to listen to the radio?

Mangogogogo · 03/10/2022 14:21

we don’t watch live tv but I like call the midwife, putting the radio on sometimes and the option to watch other, random, bbc shows.

i don’t agree with their disgusting tactics if you don’t pay. Basically reading you your rights as if it’s an arrest. Lolllllllll.

i also don’t agree with the sentiment on here that everyone who pays one is an idiot. It’s totally fine to pay one and to like what the bbc offer ffs

HairyMothballs · 03/10/2022 14:22

Marketkat The man caught me off-guard. I'd only recently (then) come out of hospital, so wan't me usual slef. I wish I'd told him to do one.

HairyMothballs · 03/10/2022 14:23

Bloody spelling errors Grin

EmmaH2022 · 03/10/2022 11:42

I haven't "just stopped paying". I filled in the declaration form and they send a confirmation you don't need a licence.

I did that too, that had stopped their letters. Although recently after the queen died, the gits started emailing and texting me to ask if I'm sure I don't need one. Desperate for money clearly.. had nothing since.

Notcontent · 03/10/2022 14:26

I don’t watch any live TV but I do pay it just to give myself the option of watching things in BBC iPlayer from time to time. I listen to R4 daily, although some of their coverage is a bit annoying. To be honest, I am not British so I find the TV licence concept quite odd.

lightisnotwhite · 03/10/2022 14:27

I pay. I really like Radio 4 ( and 1) and listen most days.

I do physically watch the TV and have Amazon. Don’t stream much.I like BBC dramas although mostly watch trash on the other channels.

willithappen · 03/10/2022 14:27

Never paid one since moving into my own house because we have never watched live tv or the bbc really. We always watch Netflix, YouTube, Amazon prime etc. the only thing we would ever watch live is sport and most of that is now on some sort of pay subscription so no point with tv license.

Always just declared we don't need one

lightisnotwhite · 03/10/2022 14:28

Beees · 03/10/2022 14:20

You do know you don't need a TV licence to listen to the radio?

Where are they getting revenue from though?

VeryQuaintIrene · 03/10/2022 14:32

I still think it's a bargain for the price, and pay for a license to watch the BBC when I'm in the UK, even though I am currently overseas. My one complaint is that I can't watch iplayer when not in the UK, and I wish they would find a way to allow license holders to do that.

Beees · 03/10/2022 14:37

lightisnotwhite · 03/10/2022 14:28

Predominantly from the licence fee but that doesn't change the fact you don't actually have to pay the licencing fee to listen to the radio. I was just clarifying as it's a common misconception that you need to pay if you listen to the radio but you don't.

Mrsfussypants1 · 03/10/2022 14:39

We won't cancel our licence, we do watch alot live along side Netflix and amazon prime. Adult dd and son in law cancelled their direct debit this summer, they don't watch anything live so didn't see the point on spending money on something they never use.

Adelant · 03/10/2022 14:44

We haven’t paid since 2014 Blush

We have the full gamut of free to air channels and apps.

We also earn above £100k as a HH.

Adelant · 03/10/2022 14:46

The letters follow the same cycle, we must have thrown away 200+ letters. We do recycle them.

200+ letters is surely borderline harassment? How much of the licence fee must they spend on such stupid methods of enforcement for something you're not actually required to have.

bringincrazyback · 03/10/2022 14:54

Beees · 03/10/2022 11:40

And (before anyone spouts this nonsense) you have to pay for it if you watch ANY live TV, not just BBC.

I think those of us who don't pay are well aware of this. I honestly don't know many people who watch live TV. Most people use streaming services.

This is an overgeneralisation. We watch a lot of live TV in our house and I think most people I know watch at least some.

Beees · 03/10/2022 14:57

This is an overgeneralisation. We watch a lot of live TV in our house and I think most people I know watch at least some.

How can it be an over generalisation when it's an accurate account of the people I know? You might indeed watch a lot of live TV but the majority of the people I know use some form of stream service and most don't watch live TV. I don't think my experience is that unusual?

Yes, we hate the red envelopes. Not only do we not pay the TV license (even though we watch live TV), we are costing them money in letters. I have thought about telling them we don’t watch live TV, but I think that would awaken a sleeping monster.
