Basically that?
I understand a lot of people have just stopped paying.

I still pay. Each time I vaguely consider stopping, something seems to happen where I want to watch live TV (which I believe includes iplayer etc. I assume it also includes anything I record on Tivo & watch later if it's broadcast live??)

Correct
Tivo recordings of broadcasts recorded to watch later qualify as the originaly broadcast TV and fall within the licence

SudocremOnEverything · 03/10/2022 12:09

I haven’t paid for a tv license in nearly a decade. You have to tell them you don’t need one.

It is bloody stupid that you have to keep telling them you don’t need one, rather than buying one when you do. It’s like me having to let sainsburys know that I won’t be needing eggs this week rather than just buying them when I do.

It’s a pain in the arse continually getting letters and having to tell the buggers yet again that you don’t need a bloody tv license.

'Stopping paying' makes it sound like you are making a statement / trying to get round things.

'No longer needing a TV license' would be more accurate.

We don't use streaming services, watch a lot of live TV, and listen to Radio4. I'm very happy to pay our license fee as I suspect it's cheaper than forking out for netflix or whatever.

It's not. It's about 3-4 times the cost of any basic package of any one streaming service. Unless you're including the cost of broadband but I expect most people pay for broadband and a TV licence.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/10/2022 12:11

I still pay. I don't watch loads live (with the exception of Masterchef!) but whole it's flawed I think its largely a positive thing. I'd cancel Netflix / Prime / Disney + before the TV licence.

IamaBluebird · 03/10/2022 12:13

I pay because I watch the sports channels, no other live tv .

HappyHappyHermit · 03/10/2022 12:18

I pay even though we can only get live via iplayer etc. I find the bbc services really useful and would be gutted if we lost bitesize and news etc.

queenofqueens · 03/10/2022 12:19

Never paid it, never will.

SpinningFloppa · 03/10/2022 12:20

I don’t pay as I don’t watch live tv but there are people on MN who don’t believe people that’s say they don’t watch it 😅

AsAnyFuleKno · 03/10/2022 12:20

I watch broadcast TV so I need a licence.

WoodlandPM · 03/10/2022 12:20

I pay and I don't know anyone who doesn't pay

I've been enjoying regular TV lately.

I also like bbc radio 6 😊

Trp · 03/10/2022 12:21

I haven't paid (or watched live tv/I Player) since 2012ish

mrsjohnnylawrence · 03/10/2022 12:22

I've never paid one. Voluntarily give money to the BBC? As if.

I've never voluntarily signed up for TV either, though had it in a few rentals but never bothered to give them my name. The BBC are corrupt and protected Saville.

Not had TV since I moved into my permanent address.

Which is really odd as it cannot be that unusual. Most of the people I know across a huge array of ages no longer watch live TV and in most cases they don't use the catch up services either. I know a handful who do but they are definitely in the minority.

mountainsunsets · 03/10/2022 12:24

Yes - we pay. We don't watch live TV but between us we watch something on iPlayer most days. I think it's excellent value for what you get.

Anniegetyourgun · 03/10/2022 12:25

I have a television, don't watch it but it's there if any visitor should want to (if it still works - haven't checked). I pay for a TV licence so can occasionally watch iPlayer etc with a clear conscience. Don't have Netflix or Sky anything at all - now THAT's a corporation to avoid giving money to!

OhmygodDont · 03/10/2022 12:27

We don’t have a licence. We don’t watch live tv or Iplayer etc we have Netflix , prime and Disney.

And I think that's going yo be increasingly common ,my ds hasent watched anything on live TV since he was young enough for c beebies ,my dh only watches Netflix, amazon prime and you tube and I watch mainly true crime box sets .

Owlsinmybedroom · 03/10/2022 12:28

I havent since 2018, I moved into a property where I needed free sat rather than free view (due to reception, I live rurally) and I couldn't be bothered with the faff.

I informed them the first time I didnt need a licence and they still ended up sending someone out to check. So this time around when they are hassling me I can't be bothered to inform them, I will, just wait for them to send someone round again.

I dont have to tell the DVLA every few years I don't need a driving licence so I can't be faffed telling the TV licensing people every few years.

latetothefisting · 03/10/2022 12:29

megletthesecond · 03/10/2022 12:05

No. I watch and listen to loads of bbc. I still circle programmes to watch in the TV guide.

I don't have the patience or time to watch streaming TV. I just want background TV news, radio and one decent programme at 9pm.

You don't have to justify why you choose to keep paying the license fee but your rationale is odd! Why would watching tv via streaming need more patience or take more time than watching it via a license?

Either way you turn tv on and click one icon - whether that be bbc1 or netflix it doesn't take any longer!

You don't need a tv license to listen to the radio and can have live news on in a variety of ways, for example sky news/aj jazeera live via youtube.

sóhâ‚‚wlÌ¥ · 03/10/2022 12:30

We still pay - but have thought about moving away from live TV services when current sky contract is up - and the using fire stick and subscriptions instead.

I think as need licence for iPlayer we may keep paying - but actual live TV we watch less and less.

Beees · 03/10/2022 12:33

Agreed. It certainly seems to be my experience. Plus despite people thinking no payment is normally some sort of moral stand in most cases its not done as some sort of protest against the BBC its that there genuinely isn't the content to justify the costs when compared to what other services offer.

I was thinking about it, but was really impressed by their coverage on the Queen and funeral. They redeemed themselves in my eyes and it reminded me why I pay my license fee

Brighteyedtriangle · 03/10/2022 12:35

I still pay it.

Dont have an aerial so havent watched live tv in about 4 years. Only stream from netflix, disney and prime.

I watch bbc iplayer about 1/2 a month.

Really want to cancel and would be happy to never watch iplayer but I do not dare 😅

gatehouseoffleet · 03/10/2022 12:36

OverTheRubicon · 03/10/2022 11:52

No, because I still watch it, but also because I think we need the BBC (flawed as it is) more than ever in today's political environment.

If you don't want to pay, then just don't watch it and you don't have to.

I agree. Although I wish they'd spend the money on worthwhile things like the World Service, rather than making programmes to live down to ITV.
