A penis straight before the Strictly late night rerun- AIBU?

Areyouactuallyserious · 02/10/2022 22:54

So we watch strictly with our kids on a Sunday as the Saturday show goes on a bit late. We record the late night rerun with the sign language.
my daughter put the recording on this morning, there was a bit of the previous show on before it, and before I know it, there’s a bloke lying on a bed, naked from the waist down, with his penis attached to some kind of truss.
I ran for the remote, but my girls saw enough to be absolutely horrified. And I feel utterly terrible that they’ve been exposed to that sort of image.

MY AIBU is- should the BBC not be much more conscious of what they put on straight before a strictly rerun, because even though it’s on late, it’s a family show so could very conceivably be recorded by a family to be watched by children, especially as this is the sign language version, so some families would only watch this version.

Im so appalled and have made a complaint. Don’t know how I could predicted this but maybe I am BU and it’s my cock up (so to speak).

This really made me giggle 😅

YABVU and still refusing to take responsibility for your own error.

Very few people record tv nowadays, it’s either live or iplayer, but even if they did, it’s late night programming.

This is on you.

SavoirFlair · 02/10/2022 23:13

I can’t say anything but YABU because it’s 2022 and you don’t need to record anything…

I still record programmes broadcast in the U.K. and received by satellite because I don’t live there and my vpn doesn’t always play ball.

Thankfully, I can’t stand Strictly so a flaccid penis wasn’t going to bother me.

not everything in life can be planned around what you want it to be. This is ridiculous. Watch it on iplayer.

This.

Its life I’m afraid and you’ll be laughing about it one day

It's just a penis. I'm sure we've all seen one. Some of us might have even touched a few... I'm not sure why all the pearl clutching.

I doubt/would hope not many children have though, which if you'd have actually read the OP rather than running in to be the first to predictably post about PeArL cLuTcHiNg then you'd know. If you think it's not a big deal for a young child to see a naked men stretching his penis then that's on you.

OP we also have issues with iplayer as our Internet connection is pretty crap so the rare times bbc has something worth watching we record it too. To be honest I wouldn't have thought ah I need to watch this first in case their timings are wildly out. Presumably you need the signed version and the fact it's shoved on after the watershed anyway is terrible.

BodGaoithe · 03/10/2022 08:07

@knittingaddict yeah he was an odd man but he did make a good point about stuff like that. He seemed genuinely sad that a bit of him had been removed without his consent and he wanted to create an invention to help people. Said invention didn’t look very safe or comfortable though!

Moonmelodies · 03/10/2022 08:10

Was he trying to make it a fiveskin?

HermioneAndRoger · 03/10/2022 08:16

I hope you have calmed down a bit OP. You are understandably transferring your feelings of guilt around the incident but this was entirely your responsibility to check. I feel really sorry for the band 2 broadcast assistant who is going to have to process your complaint. The BSL broadcast is available to you via iPlayer. If it's your preference to record it then you are free to do so but you take responsibility for managing your children's access to the recording.

There's an important point in the middle of all this about access to BSL interpreted programming but I fear it is going to be lost.

Sidisawetlettuce · 03/10/2022 08:22

I thought this was about Matt Goss.

AirFryerNinja · 03/10/2022 08:22

Imagine the sign language and f the bloke had been having a wank 😂

AirFryerNinja · 03/10/2022 08:23

If the.

Summerfun54321 · 03/10/2022 08:30

Most shocked about someone recording something in 2022.

QS90 · 03/10/2022 08:47

Yes I'm always amazed when I watch "regular" TV how much further the standards have fallen. Before long every program will just be someone's willy / fanny / bum flapping about.

Sushi7 · 03/10/2022 08:56

QS90 · 03/10/2022 00:03

I haven't watched "regular" TV for years as we just have Netflix and Disney. I'm surprised (probably also naively!) that there are men stretching their forskins out at all on the BBC!! To what end?? Was it porn?

Yes OP iswym, I'd be miffed about this too if it were me. It's another thing to have to double check all the time, and I can understand you not wanting your children to see that image. I can see how the mix up happened though of course, with it being over the watershed. Maybe they could sandwich all of the more erotic (?) adverts either right in the middle of the advert slot, or in the breaks of true crime series or similar, where the program content is also adult.

I just had to Google the tv show and it was on air at 9:35pm. I’ve never watched it but seeing a penis or boobs doesn’t necessarily make it porn. The show was on after watershed so that’s when non-child friendly shows are on. OP is the only one who is at fault for not checking an after watershed show before allowing her dc to watch it. She chose when to start recording so she chose to record the end of the tv show prior to Strictly.

Reading the comments on this thread makes me think that a lot of posters ‘lie back and think of England’ and close their eyes when they have sex😂

Rabbitbabbit · 03/10/2022 09:06

Why? Presumably everything the BBC puts out it sees as reasonable and within guidelines, so surely every complaint is of a similar ilk to this one- someone who disagrees with something from their personal point of view. Presumably OP wasn't rude or aggressive in the email going by their posts on here, therefore I suspect its just business as usual and part of their job.

Rabbitbabbit · 03/10/2022 09:10

The show was on after watershed so that’s when non-child friendly shows are on

Or in this case, when the accessible version of their most popular and family friendly programme is on.

She chose when to start recording so she chose to record the end of the tv show prior to Strictly.

It depends, if recorded from say a free view box or whatever you choose the programme to record and it starts at x time so if the previous programme overruns you get the end of that first. Presumably if using a USB stick to record you have to keep it on the channel you are recording so would have noticed.

Why because they don't want their children seeing naked men on the tv? 😖

missverstaendnis · 03/10/2022 09:12

completely not the point of the thread but why would anyone try to stretch their foreskin??

Pixiedust1234 · 03/10/2022 09:14

sponsabillaries · 03/10/2022 06:37

That’s not iPlayer being crap. That’s your internet speed.

I think there are variations on the UI but on both iPad and the iPlayer app on an LG TV you get a thumbnail of the screen above the progress bar when you fast-forward so you don’t have to guess as a pp said.

Actually its not my Internet speed. We have one of the best speeds and it never falters with other downloading, multiple gaming or streaming, eg disney+. Its just iplayer. Its crap. Why is itvhub okay but not iplayer? Oh, because its crap.

QuinkWashable · 03/10/2022 10:16

Honestly I'm surprised at this - would it be acceptable if the accessible toilet in Tescos was positioned such that anyone using it had to (for example) walk past porn magazines (if that's still a thing)? No. Same here. The accessible version of a family show should be safe to access!

How are they in any way comparable?

VestaTilley · 03/10/2022 10:26

I’m with you, that stuff shouldn’t be on TV at all. Sadly no mind ever seems to be given for kids whose parents don’t enforce the watershed, or who leave them with TVs in their rooms unattended.

But all you’ll get here is people telling you to chill out, never mind the effect on children.

That’s why BBC doesn’t show nudity until it’s after watershed. Children shouldn’t see nudity on TV so that’s why it’s the parent’s job to check the recording beforehand. Why did you take my comment out of context and make out that I think it’s ok for dc to see penises?? That’s vile of you. All I meant was that nudity is shown after watershed and some commenters are horrified that nudity is shown on TV (after watershed). Hopefully OP will learn from this and double check there aren’t any rogue footage of penises in future.

burnoutbabe · 03/10/2022 10:32

the issue is with Sky i suppose - they are including snippets of other shows alongside their accessable versions. I often record 2am versions of things to avoid clashes (on Sky plus and virgin media) and wouldn't be expecting a penis appearing right at the start! Luckily it doesn't happen often.

Shtfday · 03/10/2022 10:34

@Sushi7
Imagine your child watches Thomas the tank engine. Normally these are shown during the daytime and not after the watershed.
Deaf child accessible version is on after the watershed. Said child is in bed so parent records it. this version has inappropriate programmes either side. This is wrong. NOt fair to families needing accessible programmes which are highly limited anyway and what is available is at the wrong time.

These accessible programmes should be available at the same time. WHy they can have BSL as standard I don't know it's not like the interpreter makes it inaccessible to hearing people. Maybe those who need the uninterpreted version could record a later showing or watch on Iplayer.

Come on how many people who record a family friendly show would really sit and watch it beforehand just to make sure? They wouldn't and they shouldn't have to. Also often there's no need for nudity, it's done to be titillating or just because they can. Many actors and actresses have spoken out about their regrets and the pressure and so personally I think it'd be great if it was banned unless it genuinely serves an actual purpose; no reflection on my sex life.
