AIBU?

A penis straight before the Strictly late night rerun- AIBU?

So we watch strictly with our kids on a Sunday as the Saturday show goes on a bit late. We record the late night rerun with the sign language.
my daughter put the recording on this morning, there was a bit of the previous show on before it, and before I know it, there’s a bloke lying on a bed, naked from the waist down, with his penis attached to some kind of truss.
I ran for the remote, but my girls saw enough to be absolutely horrified. And I feel utterly terrible that they’ve been exposed to that sort of image.

MY AIBU is- should the BBC not be much more conscious of what they put on straight before a strictly rerun, because even though it’s on late, it’s a family show so could very conceivably be recorded by a family to be watched by children, especially as this is the sign language version, so some families would only watch this version.

Im so appalled and have made a complaint. Don’t know how I could predicted this but maybe I am BU and it’s my cock up (so to speak).

@Tsort I just had a look to see if I was in a tiny minority without realising, by not using iplayer instead.

“The BBC iPlayer now accounts for 12% of BBC television viewing, or 53 minutes per week” July 2021. The BBC iPlayer now accounts for 12% of BBC television viewing (BBC Annual Report and Accounts for 2020-2021)

so whilst I accept everyone’s point about not assuming bbc will not put a foreskin before the sign language strictly rerun, seems like most people are still just watching regular tv, so maybe they could think about checking.

Most people are still watching normal tv but, and I’m repeating myself here Most people who want to catch up will be doing so on iPlayer.

What should they ‘check’? Should they never show late night telly because it might be before something you’ve decided to record? Really? You're aware that late night television exists, so maybe YOU should think of checking. You’re coming across as remarkably entitled.

Content Warning

I once turned over to BBC2 late at night to find there was a live dog being skinned whilst tethered to a gate. I am still traumatised by it and it is many years since I was a child.

Be careful about checking what you record late at night.

This is one of the things I miss about working at the bbc. Reading the overnight logs from the complaints department. 90% bonkers

It's post watershed. It would have had a warning. In the day and age of on demand tv you could pick it up on iplayer.

I'm not sure what resolution you're hoping for.

Same! I had nothing to do with the complaints department, but I loved reading the logs.

Also, How To With John Wilson is brilliant.

Just because it’s the sign language version of a family show I suppose, so probably getting recorded by that target audience.

I definitely will check for straying penises before any other late reruns of family programming in future though

Totally agree that IPlayer is crap. Slow, difficult to speed through and incredibly difficult to find programmes using my tivo box.

The licence fee should be abolished, it's obscene that people are imprisoned for refusing to pay for Strictly Come Dancing. It's nonsense.

Grandma dozed off while babysitting her 4 year-old grandchild.
Woke up at 2:30am to find the child engrossed in Gunther von Hagens dissecting and embalming bodies in bizarre poses.
Twenty years later, child is largely well-balanced and a scientist in a medical field.
Any history of Rabbis in your family OP?

I voted YBU because even if the show itself I assume is considered family friendly it was airing late at night which is generally when content aimed towards adults is on. Just take it as a lesson learned and make sure you check before letting your children watch.

You know that recording live tv tends to grab a minute or two of the previous show.

You know you're recording the late night post watershed version, where penises abound.

You have the alternative of recording the earlier version, pre-watershed penis free.

You also have the alternative of using iPlayer...which puts warnings all over any penis related content.

Given ALL those factors, YABU... you failed to parent/manage what your children see. The TV is not a nanny, it is not up to the TV to ensure your kids don't see things they're not ready to see yet.

would you have been as offended and outraged had it been boobs or a bum on show?
it’s just a bodypart, there’s no point in creating a big drama over it. It wasn’t porn. Don’t teach your kids to grow up embarrassed about bodies and ashamed to discuss them.

Around 50% of the population have a penis. It was after the watershed and you cannot blame the BBC for your poor technology.

Out of curiosity OP, how would would you have reacted if it was an article about a murder rather than a penis?

The clue would be in the “late night” timing. It’s on you that you didn’t ensure the recording was only watched from the start of the show you wanted your kids to see

I believe a man was trying to stretch his foreskin- from a brief Google.

And if the OP or her children were deaf? Or they were learning BSL?

The signed programmes are on overnight.

Sorry- you chose to not record the watershed version , your post doesn't make it clear if your family requires the sign language version or you choose to watch that version, but it is up to you to be aware of what therefore can be on before- violent or sexually explicit programmes. It's not up to the BBC to police this but you.

madasawethen · 03/10/2022 05:10

You didn't mention how old your children are.

Anyway, It's probably a good idea to quickly have a look at the things you record so you can edit out things like that.

I think, that whilst it's late night, given that this is the accessible version of their flagship family show, it would behoove the BBC to have a little bit of common sense around what's on right before, given that it's always been the case that people recording tend to get a bit of the previous program.

This isn't a random repeat - it's a special version specifically for people who can't watch the standard version with full enjoyment otherwise - presumably especially children who might not even be able to read subtitles yet.

And because of that, I'm going to say YANBU.

Defo use the iplayer version rather than record it from now on though! (although, I'm pretty sure I've had it cut into the previous program on iplayer before too - maybe that doesn't happen any more though)

AAAAND

Yes, a penis is a penis, but I can imagine that seeing a penis in some kind of fore-skin stretching device could be a tad horrifying for a little one.
