Anyone else miss smoking??

I gave up a good few years ago. When I was a smoker I used to love it, yet spent the entire time wishing I could quit, repeatedly trying and failing.

I don't miss smelling like an ashtray or the expense, yet just recently I'm craving a glass of wine and a ciggie. Are we doomed as ex smokers to always have these feelings?

Yes. 3 months in. Want one at least 40 times a day. Horrible isn't it. Like it will never end.

Billyhargrovesmullet · 01/10/2022 17:48

I’m one of those ex smokers who can’t stand the smell of it, turns my stomach and never fancy one at all

jammywagonwheel · 01/10/2022 17:49

Yes I miss it... Every now and then I have a go and realise I don't want to do it again as it's horrid... But then I really miss it ..I think I just miss being young and free

FionnulaTheCooler · 01/10/2022 17:50

Yes, I miss real cigarettes, I vape now but it isn't the same and sometimes on a night out after a few drinks I beg a real ciggie from a friend. I can't afford to go back to smoking due to the price of them, plus obviously all the terrible health risks, but I do miss it sometimes even though I know smoking is a really stupid thing to do.

TopEndChops · 01/10/2022 17:52

I miss the idea of it rather than the reality. I often dream I'm smoking one, but even in the dreams I feel bad that I've unquit, so to speak.

Yes 😂. I haven't smoked for 15 years and I still get occasional mercifully fleeting cravings.

This will change so hang on in there! I gave up years ago and don't think of it often, but occasionally I get those "pangs!" 😬😬

I gave up 36 years ago.

Still miss a B&H after tea.

I think this is how I feel. I guess I associate it with the nostalgia of the era maybe. Young, free, single, on the town with a drink and ciggie, not a care in the world!

I was a party smoker, a stress smoker and a lockdown smoker. Never a real smoker.

I think the idea of it is often better than the reality, and for me it's a rare craving rather than the sort of constant craving for something like chocolate.

urbanbuddha · 01/10/2022 17:57

Yes, last night coming home I had to seriously talk myself out of going to the 24 hour supermarket. I haven't smoked for years but I still crave cigarettes sometimes, especially when alcohol's been taken.

I don't think I could smoke those
remember Silk Cut Ultra Low? That was me 😂

SilverCatStripes · 01/10/2022 17:58

I haven’t smoked for 10 years now , and I still get pangs , especially when I am having a drink.

I was very much 20 + cigarettes a day, for about 15 years , and would smoke everywhere - including bed and even the bath ! It’s bizarre to think of that now, but the point is I absolutely loved smoking.

BUT (pun entirely intended!) I am so glad I quit - especially when I get ill because I always think of how much rougher and more ill I would be if I was still smoking. Also when I’m walking /mucking around with the kids , it’s nice not to get out of breath within 5 minutes!

Stick with it OP, I promise you will be glad you quit far more than the times you miss smoking- especially once you hit the 6
month mark.

Loveinacandle · 01/10/2022 17:59

Yes me too! I’m 3 years in but still get an occasional desire. I’m glad it’s not just me!

I quit about 10 years ago too. I used to smoke in bed and the bath too, I'd totally forgotten about that 🤣🙈

I had quit for over ten years, then two years ago I started again (stressful life stuff) and now I’m desperately trying to quit again 🤦🏻‍♀️ I used to fancy one every time I had a drink, it never went away, and I can’t believe how hard it is to stop again. Even though I KNOW how awful it is for me in every way. So I’m reading this thread to remind me lots have people have stayed stopped, even though they might still want one sometimes!

RiverSkater · 01/10/2022 18:03

I was saying this the other day!

I only had a few a day but it was 'me time' from work. I'd escape at lunchtime and walk round the block and find somewhere to stand with a cigarette. I thought I hid it well but I'm sure I must have reeked of it as these says I can sniff the merest hint of a cigarette.

It was the forerunner of mindfulness. Light a cig, drift off into the moment.

Saucery · 01/10/2022 18:07

I miss the smoking break camaraderie, the extra oomph they gave to a drink when out partying, the enforced isolation from crowded places or boring training courses in my old job. I get nostalgic when I smell fresh, real cigarette smoke, for a brief moment.
But I don’t miss being a slave to how many I have left and where I can get more from, having to stand outside in the pissing rain, knowing I stunk of stale smoke, having to wash my hair every single day or feeling like a skank.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/10/2022 18:08

Silk cut were OK, but Bennies went best with a cuppa.

Nowheretoogo · 01/10/2022 18:14

I miss the first fag of the day!.I vape but it isn’t the same

Luckycatt · 01/10/2022 18:14

16 years since I regularly smoked. Since then I've had relapsed or just the odd one on a night out, but that's got less and less. I remember not being able to enjoy a holiday if I wasn't smoking, but that's changed now. And I can be in the pub without even thinking of smoking these days.

But I do miss it. Or I miss a nice version of it. I wish I could just stick to that ciggie with a cup of coffee in the morning, or in the beer garden on a sunny day. I don't actually want the reality of cravings, stinking, feeling like crap, shit skin.

The urge gets way less, just a very occasional manageable pang. Ride through the worst, you can do this!!

I like remember that feeling of a smoke after my tea or the first thing in the morning cig, so yes i still have times is miss it and crave the idea of it.

But i look at our DS and know its really not worth increasing the risk of health problems or missing out on things in his life, i want to live to a million now as healthily as i can Blush
We have cancer in our family and it took my mum too early so thats my motivation.
