Anyone else miss smoking??

I gave up a good few years ago. When I was a smoker I used to love it, yet spent the entire time wishing I could quit, repeatedly trying and failing.

I don't miss smelling like an ashtray or the expense, yet just recently I'm craving a glass of wine and a ciggie. Are we doomed as ex smokers to always have these feelings?

I wish it wasn't bad for you. I mostly miss it on holidays in Europe sitting outside cafés in the sun!

Love this thread- seems to be full of my soulmates! Miss it, but not enough for the stench and rough chest😆

I've not smoked for 19 years but totally get what you mean! As others have said, I think it's that I smoked when I was young, single and carefree so it's more nostalgic than anything. I'm just back from holiday and I will always want to sit on the balcony with my kindle, a drink and a smoke. I don't, but it always triggers the desire.

After all this time I know the benefits of not smoking outweigh a temporary thought. But, I did love a puff!

But also on a night out it’s about the social aspect - the smoking area is the best place to be and I love the atmosphere. Hate sitting like a lemon while my mates all go off for a fag

I’ve just been on holiday to Mexico there was nowhere to smoke I was glad. Then I found the secret area tucked out of sight. Full of laughter and all inclusive cocktails. I was back on them in a flash but haven’t touched them since. There is just something about smokers corner.

Gave up in 2015 and I'm disappointed that I could still murder a ciggie at times.

I've told my DH that if I'm diagnosed with a terminal illness, I'm starting again...

I gave up 33 years ago last August. Haven't touched one since. I still get occasional cravings. It's okay though, a bit like affectionately remembering an old boyfriend.

Main thing is, don't ever think you can have "just the one". It took me five attempts to finally kick the habit. And I know I am in fact a smoker who doesn't currently smoke; I don't think I will ever be completely cured.

Used to miss it a LOT more when I gave it up 20 years ago, (after 12 years of smoking,) but not now really....... Although I have to say, if me and DH split/he died, and I got with someone else who was a smoker, I may be tempted to start again! Though I don't actually think I would get with a smoker tbh. It's pretty foul really. Smelly, unhealthy, and expensive... But I used to enjoy it soooo much.

NOBODY in my social circle or immediate family smokes now. DD - mid 20s - has about a dozen friends, and they have DPs and DH's (as does she) all mid 20s to late 30s. Not a single smoker in over 20 people.

I did have dreams that I was smoking again right up to about 8-10 years ago, some 10 years after stopping!

Been on a vape for about 18 months. I don't miss smoking. I grew to hate having brown fingers and teeth, the looks from people, going back to work after 10 years and having to walk miles to stand in a bin hut to smoke, and how I must have reeked.

I remember years ago a woman at work made a huge fuss because I was putting my coat in the same cupboard as hers. It was only a team of three and it was because I smoked and it was getting in her clothes. I was hurt at the time because I didn't think she was reasonable but now I'm mortified how bad I must have looked and smelled. Stale cigarettes are not appealing.

My skin's better, my nails grow and I don't know how I made the time.

Still get the odd craving though 😁

Still miss it after over 25 years. I may join those of you restarting at 70. 10 years to go.

Thinking about it, I don’t think I know anyone who still smokes…

Carlycat · 02/10/2022 03:57

Never. 15 years since I quit. It's beyond me that I smoked for so long. It's utterly repugnant

PreferAnimals · 02/10/2022 09:10

I felt completely chilled, relaxed and happy with a fag in my hand. Absolutely LOVED a glass of wine and a fag! I've never ever felt as completely relaxed and happy since I quit. Finishing a meal without a cig to follow isn't the same either. It's obviously and addicts illusion, a drug, but do I miss it? Hell yeah!
I also miss being 22 with my whole life ahead of me 😔
