Anyone else miss smoking??

I gave up a good few years ago. When I was a smoker I used to love it, yet spent the entire time wishing I could quit, repeatedly trying and failing.

I don't miss smelling like an ashtray or the expense, yet just recently I'm craving a glass of wine and a ciggie. Are we doomed as ex smokers to always have these feelings?

No. I smoked from the age of 12 to when I was 35. (apart from not smoking during my pregnancies). I'm 63 now and thankfully, my husband and 2 sons have never smoked. I hate the smell of a smoker's breath, hair and clothes.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 01/10/2022 18:20

I’m absolutely fine until I’m out in a pub or bar and am tipsy. Then I’m ratching fags off people like some tramp 😂 I always end up regretting it though but I always was a social smoker and on a normal day I wouldn’t touch cigarettes with a barge pole

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 01/10/2022 18:22

But also on a night out it’s about the social aspect - the smoking area is the best place to be and I love the atmosphere. Hate sitting like a lemon while my mates all go off for a fag

Puffykins · 01/10/2022 18:23

I quit 10 years ago too and I miss it SO much. In bed, in the bath, driving, after dinner - and especially after a really stressful day when a cigarette was just magical.

But do you KNOW how much they cost now??

Auntieobem · 01/10/2022 18:27

I quit about 7 years ago, have had 2 and a half cigs since then. 2 at funerals, and half on holiday. They were all horrible, as pp says, it's the thought nit the reality. Haven't had a cig in about 3 years.

citychick · 01/10/2022 18:28

I do miss it. I miss my 10pm smoke outside, in the dark peace and quiet.

Lived abroad until recently. Cigarettes were cheap and came in flavours. I smoked a Marlboro called Mint Storm. Oh I miss them. However returning back to UK has been good for health and my pocket...might even have enough for the energy bills..

I miss the first fag of the day!.I vape but it isn’t the same

Me too, it was the best one of the day. My H used to bring me a cup of coffee every morning and I'd sit with bed with a coffee and a fag.

mumofthemonsters808 · 01/10/2022 18:41

Yes I stopped smoking 5 years ago and will never smoke again but I still crave my Silk Cut.

ChevreChase · 01/10/2022 18:41

I gave up over 13 years ago, not had one since, and don't like walking behind a smoker smelling their smoke (which happens less and less these days), but sometimes I still would like one. Just now and again. Possibly with a coffee or glass of wine. I did really, really love smoking.

I’m one of those ex smokers who can’t stand the smell of it, turns my stomach and never fancy one at all

Same. I was never a very heavy smoker and I really admire people who are able to quit and not go back.

I quit 2 years ago and I miss it lots. I don't miss the things you describe and the cost but I absolutely miss having cig to myself to unwind

PortalooSunset · 01/10/2022 18:48

I do. Know I wouldn't be able to stop at one though so I never give in to the craving.

Vicliz24 · 01/10/2022 18:50

I quit 16 years ago and all year I'm ok but the minute I get off a plane and on holiday I desperately want one . I bought some about five years ago in Greece because the urge was so bad . Lit up and was almost sick but it happens every year .

Georgeskitchen · 01/10/2022 18:53

Yes definitely, and particularly with an alcoholic drink. My aunt gave 40 years ago but still has a craving every so often !!

UneFoisAuChalet · 01/10/2022 18:53

I loved smoking! It’s been 8 years and whenever I see my brother, I have one. Then realise I don’t miss it one bit.
I was very much the cigarette and coffee or wine type of gal. I liked the fact it was a ‘bad girl’ thing and unfortunately it took me years to outgrow it. Mind you, smoking suits young people better, it’s a different story when you’re in your 40s with a raspy voice and dry skin.
I can run again, I don’t stink of fags and my skin thanks me for it everyday.

Roseyleaf · 01/10/2022 18:57

Stopped 30 years ago and don't miss it at all because of the smell.
But I do miss how it kept me slim by killing my appetite and tastebuds.

ilovepixie · 01/10/2022 18:57

I stopped 2 years ago. My OH has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer and I'm fighting with my self not to start smoking again!

ilovepixie · 01/10/2022 18:59

I was very much 20 + cigarettes a day, for about 15 years , and would smoke everywhere - including bed and even the bath ! It’s bizarre to think of that now, but the point is I absolutely loved smoking.*

Ooh I loved a cigarette in the bath!

TheHoover · 01/10/2022 19:03

I gave up 20 yrs ago but remain a party smoker. I smoke 2-3 times a year eg at the end of weddings, on a big night out with a smoker/smokers etc.
Gives a nice big nicotine hit but I need to neck about half a pint of water immediately after.

ThisShitsBananas · 01/10/2022 19:06

I have 1 a week on a Friday evening with a glass of wine. I appreciate it’s still bad but I never got addicted to them.

Simonjt · 01/10/2022 19:08

Yes, I do still have the very occasional one, I had one last weekend, it was amazing.

user2156 · 01/10/2022 19:13

Stop about 20 years ago. Loved it with a glass of wine when kids where in bed , silk cut, more menthol, consulet menthol!!!! Even had a camel once !!!!

Lesserspotteddogfish · 01/10/2022 19:14

Yes. I gave up 16 years ago but still miss it. Not just smoking itself and the satisfaction it gave, but the fact that I was thin and happy while I smoked (because I smoked).

ArcaneWireless · 01/10/2022 19:15

Almost 18 years for me.

I’m not fond of the smell any more.

That said, I sit out the back with my espresso and my crossword on a fine day and still put my hand out to fumble for my cig packet.

I can never have another because I know I’ll be straight back to it and I don’t think I’d manage to go cold turkey again.

I think if I’d only two weeks left on this earth, I’d be chumming up my old friend to find me Capri menthol slims.

I believe they are banned in Scotland now (and probably everywhere else) so in reality I’d probably just succumb to gin.

HappyKoala56 · 01/10/2022 19:16

I quit 18 years ago, and still miss it at times. Not allowed myself a single cigarette in all that time as I know if I had 1 I'd still want 10! It's not often, there is usually a trigger - Sat on a balcony of an evening while on holiday is one trigger of mine for example.
