Anyone else miss smoking??

I gave up a good few years ago. When I was a smoker I used to love it, yet spent the entire time wishing I could quit, repeatedly trying and failing.

I don't miss smelling like an ashtray or the expense, yet just recently I'm craving a glass of wine and a ciggie. Are we doomed as ex smokers to always have these feelings?

Yes! This is me! I haven't been a regular smoker since about 2007 when I met now DH. I smoked for about 9 years. I did have a summer nearly 10 years ago when we were on a break when I happily went right back to smoking, but stopped again when we got back together. I could just as easily have one now as I always did.

Oddly, the film Apollo 13 always makes me want to smoke. I think partly because so many of them smoke in the film, but also partly because I'd watch it a lot in my smoking heyday and always have two or three.

I miss the smoking break camaraderie, the extra oomph they gave to a drink when out partying, the enforced isolation from crowded places or boring training courses in my old job. I get nostalgic when I smell fresh, real cigarette smoke, for a brief moment.
But I don’t miss being a slave to how many I have left and where I can get more from, having to stand outside in the pissing rain, knowing I stunk of stale smoke, having to wash my hair every single day or feeling like a skank.

This 👍 Occasionally I'll smell one and go 'aaah', but mostly I remember stinking like an ashtray. Also how ciggies made a hangover extra crap.

LaQuern · 01/10/2022 19:24

Yep!! My and my other half quit at the same time. If we're walking down the street and someone is smoking he's repelled, but I want to walk right through it

Decafflatteplease · 01/10/2022 19:25

God this has made me nostalgic 🤣

I used to very rarely smoke at uni and my early twenties. Never got addicted thankfully. Mainly a social smoker back when you could still smoke indoors. Stopped when the DC were very young possibly because I never go out anymore 😂 and DH absolutely hates it.

I think I miss that young carefree me! I was a silk cut girl, occasionally a cigar with a large red wine. Feels like a lifetime ago, it is I suppose!

I quit 18 years ago, and still miss it at times. Not allowed myself a single cigarette in all that time as I know if I had 1 I'd still want 10! It's not often, there is usually a trigger - Sat on a balcony of an evening while on holiday is one trigger of mine for example.

Yes! The holiday balcony! Why are certain things sooo triggering?

I haven't smoked for over ten years and didn't even smoke that many, maybe about ten a week and only regularly for a couple of years. But I loved it! I do miss cigarettes and the feel of holding them and the little buzz. Would never pick it up again but every now and then I think about how much I enjoyed it.

ThreeLocusts · 01/10/2022 19:32

I still miss it too, over 20 years after stopping, and never having been a heavy smoker.

I remember reading somewhere that nicotine really has a substantial effect on focus (as in, improves it) and I think that's what I miss most - that boost in concentration and motivation. Sometimes I take an extra deep breath when I walk past a burning cigarette...

I have a friend who smokes occasionally, and when we met over something stressful recently (clearing out her late mother's house), I bummed just one drag of her roll-up a couple of times.

Of course roll-ups are strong, at any rate the effect was dramatic - totally light-headed and buzzing for about 5 minutes. Weird, but somehow still desirable. I'd never buy tobacco again though.

MotherofLs · 01/10/2022 19:35

I quit about 5 years ago but every now and again I do miss it horrendously...

BoxcarMilly · 01/10/2022 19:35

I gave up 20 years ago but even now the smell of a freshly lit ciggie makes me go "ummmmmm"

AtSomePointInLife · 01/10/2022 19:42

I gave up 2 months ago after 20+ years. I was a secret smoker in the latter years and it was getting ridiculous smoking when kids weren't looking, running upstairs to brush teeth, quick spray of deodorant, standing in the rain. Honestly it was so stressful. Now I vape and can sit on the toilet in peace without smelling like an ashtray Envy I don't miss it at all.

Someone mentioned silk cut, I use to smoke these at 15 but cut the top with scissors so it would be stronger 🫣 only smoked them because my friend always bought them and we use to go halves on a packet 😂

I had quit for over ten years, then two years ago I started again (stressful life stuff) and now I’m desperately trying to quit again 🤦🏻‍♀️ I used to fancy one every time I had a drink, it never went away, and I can’t believe how hard it is to stop again. Even though I KNOW how awful it is for me in every way. So I’m reading this thread to remind me lots have people have stayed stopped, even though they might still want one sometimes!

This was me. Stopped for 10 years and thought I'd never start again. Offered a cigarette after a stressful day, took it and within weeks was back up to 20+ a day. 8 years on and I'm now trying again, this week I'm down to 10 a day and am trying vaping with zero nicotine ( silk cut ultras before the black packets - who knows what we're smoking now...) Can't believe what a silly sod I've been!

SorrelForbes · 01/10/2022 19:51

I was a heavy smoker (20 - 30 a day), started smoking at 14 and I gave up 18 years, 3 months and 3 weeks ago. I still have dreams about smoking. I loved it, used to smoke in bed, in the bath, anywhere. As a pp said, it's all tied up with memories of being young, going out drinking, flirting and dancing. I was thin.

keeprunningupthathill · 01/10/2022 19:53

I was only an occasional social smoker, but I still take a deep breath every time I pass someone with a cigarette. Really miss the smell, but probably because it reminds me of being in pubs in my young carefree days! I don't it's the smell in my hair the next day.

RedRobyn2021 · 01/10/2022 19:56

Yes, I have up 3 years ago and I still miss it sometimes. I think I'd probably have had another by now if it wasn't for the fact I'm co-sleeping and breastfeeding my daughter. Also want more children and scared if I start again I will struggle stopping.

ACatCalledPuss · 01/10/2022 19:56

Rarely miss it now after 16 years but weirdly always think about it when we go abroad. Think that is because the Europeans smoke more.

userxx · 01/10/2022 19:57

I used to love smoking and was bloody good at it. After giving up I used to have the occasional puff on someone's but the last puff gave me a horrific migraine and put me off them for life.

I used to love having a smoke on the beach when on holiday.

Merryoldgoat · 01/10/2022 19:57

Over 15 years given up and I really miss it.

Brefugee · 01/10/2022 19:57

gosh yes, that first drag when you light up?

But i hate the smell, hate it being in my hair etc, and all the rest. So I just imagine it

Johnnysgirl · 01/10/2022 20:03

You were bloody good at it? I'm trying to figure out what this means?!

TheDogsMother · 01/10/2022 20:16

Ahh yes I do. I quit about eight years ago after many years of smoking. Holidays used to be difficult and I can remember sitting at a cafe in a sunny little port and honestly could have bought some cigs there and then. Then I stop and think about the reality (cost, smell etc). I do love a bit of passive smoking though.

ladymalfoy45 · 01/10/2022 20:18

Yes.

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 01/10/2022 20:23

I was literally just toying with starting a thread about the same thing and then here you were in my active threads.

Yes. And I’m really missing it tonight. I think it might be because I’ve been watching an Italian film with lots of smoking in it. I’m not sure though as sometimes I barely notice…either way, a glass of wine and a cigarette seems like utter bliss right now.

Popcorns · 01/10/2022 20:26

10 years and I still miss it!

When I've had a few drinks when I'm out and a friend is smoking, I've been known to have a few. But then feel dreadful the morning after 🤢

PinkCheetah · 01/10/2022 20:32

I quit just over a year ago, before I found out I was pregnant. Midway through the pregnancy I cracked on a night out and had half a figgy. Felt awfully guilty.

I've not smoked since. But I miss that morning cig, the after dinner cig, the holiday cig.,I'm embarrassed to how much I must've stunk and no one said anything because I can smell a whiff a mile off.

This means however shit or poorly I felt, I'd smoke regardless. I'd push on through it. Fucking dedication.
