To think faces look better without foundation?

I get covering acne, scarring, rosacea and things like that especially for confidence...but I think most women look far better without any foundation, which usually looks nice when first applied and then looks like a cloying mask...especially when the makeup is heavy.

That's nice for you. Obviously others disagree. Why bitch about them. It's their face.

notdaddycool · 01/10/2022 07:54

i guess you spot it when it’s put on badly, not when it’s done well.

isthismylifenow · 01/10/2022 07:54

Yours might, but mine doesn't.

properdoughnut · 01/10/2022 07:55

Also if it bugs you stop staring at their faces and analysing them for "flaws". Try having a conversation with the person and judge their character not their make up skills.

Changeableweather · 01/10/2022 07:55

I think a lot depends on the quality of the foundation and the skill of the applier. My mother wears it every day, has done for 40 years, spends a fortune on lovely products, and looks phenomenal. I wear it once a year, spend a fiver at boots, and look like a French mime with a bad tan.

Newusernameaug · 01/10/2022 07:55

I agree that I think most women look better with none to minimal make up, but that’s a personal preference and not a judgement to them.

Ooohyeah · 01/10/2022 07:56

My face looks awful without foundation.

StarWitness · 01/10/2022 07:56

Depends. If you have the right shade and blend it properly, it can look totally natural and just like ‘your skin but better’.

Obviously if you trowel it on, don’t blend it, wear a shade too dark or light - it can look mask like.

I do think the trend for heavy foundation on very young women with good skin is a shame. It can look harsh and ageing at a time when your natural skin is the best it’s ever going to be.

MiniTheMinx · 01/10/2022 07:56

Other people seem to look very nice wearing it. I don't, not anymore, but that's OK.

J0y · 01/10/2022 07:57

I look better with foundation around my eyes and nose. But I'm 52. Once upon a time my eyelids weren't so red!

I just wear make up because I want to, I enjoy putting it on, it takes two minutes.

I don't think I put it on badly. On the rare occasions that I don't have any make up on, i'm asked if i'm ok, tired, unwell. So people see my foundation face as my normal face.

Hibernationsetting · 01/10/2022 07:57

I suspect you actually probably haven’t seen that many women without foundation. Those who look like they aren’t have probably spent hours perfecting their minimal natural look.

Iamnewhere · 01/10/2022 07:59

I prefer how I look with foundation when a professional puts it on and it's first applied. After a few hours I always go cakey and feel quite self conscious.
I've tried everything (diff application, diff brands etc). If anyone has any tips let me know 🤣

Ewarty · 01/10/2022 07:59

I'm not keen on make up (I can't put my finger on why, exactly) I enjoy looking myself, just as I am - I'm not an overly feminine woman, though.

I admit I notice when other women are heavily made up (I guess badly/layered on). I think women look far, far better without make up but that's just me, and obviously everyone should just do what they want/enjoy.

JamSandle · 01/10/2022 08:01

Oh mumsnet...what a weird and hostile bunch at a simple and subjective observation 🤣

Bestcatmum · 01/10/2022 08:01

That really depends on the person. A 20 year old wearing thick cakey foundation and fake spider eyelashes is awful.
I'm 6o and a bit of touché elat and some subtle colour really evens out my skin tone.
My elderly aunts used to trowel it on, use bright red lipstick and rouge and paint their eyebrows on in black and they used to scare the bejeezus out of me as a child.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/10/2022 08:02

The beauty industry has really done a number on women, hasn't it? So much money, so much time, so much angst over whether we look good enough. There is no male equivalent.

Ponoka7 · 01/10/2022 08:03

I don't bother day to day with foundation any more. I love the makeup look, though. I only wear bare minerals when I go out. I do wear under eye colour corrector and concealer and at least mascara everyday. Sometimes full eye makeup. You either like it or don't. I live in sunglasses from spring to around now and my eyes do feel better for being makeup free.

rookiemere · 01/10/2022 08:04

Depends what you mean by foundation.

I definitely look better when I apply some BB tinted moisturiser, but I don't like the look or feel of full foundation so I don't use it. By better I mean less like death warmed up.

AffronttoBS · 01/10/2022 08:04

Yabu. A light foundation, or bb cream, properly applied, evens out the skin and tone down the redness.

However, just foundation without the eyes, cheeks and lips done minimally does look awful.

Midnights · 01/10/2022 08:04

I disagree personally, I think a lot of people you see without foundation probably have a little bit of very good foundation on vs slapping on a lot of the stuff! Heavy makeup isn't my fave, but it can look fab on some people. I think it's age dependent too - I'm in my late 20s and can look fine with heavy or light makeup because it doesn't settle in lines or separate on my face, perhaps my skin in ten years time will give me a much worse result 😂

Ponoka7 · 01/10/2022 08:06

"The beauty industry has really done a number on women, hasn't it?"

I get the whole beauty myth/business and found the recent thread on bed perfume a bit sad. But I want the choice of being able to paint myself. I'd always at least paint my nails.

Keroppi · 01/10/2022 08:07

Looks good in photos though.

Explaintome · 01/10/2022 08:08

I think lots of the faces you like "without foundation" will be wearing it.

I agree, I don't like very heavy foundation, but also recognise that some people do like that mask and that's up to them.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 01/10/2022 08:08

That's your opinion. Your face may look better without it, not everyone's does. Alternatively, someone could look at you and think you could use some foundation 🤷🏻‍♀️

The beauty industry has really done a number on women, hasn't it? So much money, so much time, so much angst over whether we look good enough. There is no male equivalent.

I think this articulates part of why I dislike make up. It's sad that everything to do with women's bodies has to be 'improved'.

It's saying we're not enough. This is the foundation (ha) of the beauty industry's message to us.

I understand make up can be felt to be part of someone's identity and personality, but the undertone of no being good enough, just as you are is sad.
