Jack Monroe off Twitter

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

I think the people booking her for events need to do some due diligence around the people they are platforming.

Yes, but when confronted about this, they say they have and that they don’t listen to idle gossip sites/there’s no proof of her Patreon fuckery.

The idle gossip site is a receipt factory of Jacks own fucking words and as for the Patreon, there’s plenty of evidence.

zingally · 01/10/2022 17:03

Oh, she's a narcissist through and through. She thrives on drama and loves a bit of martyrdom. Her story is constantly changing, and full of holes. She does a Twitter flounce at least once every other month. She'll be back within a fortnight.

ChocChipOwl · 01/10/2022 17:43

I've seen the slight pasting she's getting on Instagram right now

She's posted a photo of her puppy with what look like quite bad matting - it's a cocker poo and I suppose they need a lot of brushing and grooming. Anyway, a few are being quite vocal about it!

TrashyPanda · 01/10/2022 18:03

Roasties - undercooked
yorkies - flat, sad and disappointing
jack Monroe - mediocre cook, comes across as an aggressive bully on Twitter, worryingly vague about “charity” donations, overplays the “poor little me” sympathy card.

You don’t want to get on the wrong side of dog Instagram!

Wasn’t there an incident with an ill kitten?

Wasn’t there an incident with an ill kitten?

It died, didn't it?

ChocChipOwl · 01/10/2022 18:28

I can't recall the ins and outs of the kitten and I'm sure she was trying to do the right thing but ultimately let the cat suffer when she didn't have it put down straight away on Vets advice

I read that article a while ago and while i have no idea or comment on whether JM is doing any kind of scam, I will say that the author does not seem to have a very good grasp or understanding of poverty and what it can be like. It can be a partner gifting you a holiday and you taking it because you feel so down and you really want to go. It can be really inconsistent income, doing well one month and badly the next. It can be managing one month and not the other. It can be buying things you really want at times when you have got money (e.g. make-up) and then struggling to afford electricity at another point. It's not as simple as it being consistent all year round or even all month long. I know for me I have 3 good weeks and then one bad one. I try to stretch things out but when you've gone without you end up buying things you really want like e.g. a trifle or things that are unnecessary bc you have deprived yourself in the week in the run up to it. That's what struck me from the article. It was a very simplistic view of what it's like to struggle for money.

Having said that, OF COURSE, if someone has an income of several thousands that is different. I don't know JM's personal situation or income so I would never comment on that.

Murdoch1949 · 01/10/2022 19:07

Some think she's a saint, others that she's a grifter (me). She is 'earning' hundreds pm from her Patreon account, where people have signed up to support her. They have received nothing in return, are ignored when they request refunds. She famously announced she was donating her books to food banks, actually that was individuals who bought 2 books, one for themselves another for her to donate. Her Patreon subscribers may well be much poorer than her. Did you see her Twitter image of dozens of expensive lipsticks, or her diamond rings, or her new pedigree puppy (£2000?)? There's obviously an issue with her, publicising a lifestyle her main fan base could never aspire to. Why do that? Unless you delve into her posts and realise her lies, then some will think she's helping the poor. She even criticised Tom Kerridge and Marcus Rashford for their Full Time Meals, the weekly posting of budget recipes, saying it was her idea. She rarely posts recipes now - 2 in 3 months apparently - so why the issue with others? Surely the more trying to help others the better?

potniatheron · 29/09/2022 16:27

That's interesting. I've genuinely never thought about this. I either donate to registered charities or I give money to people I know well and trust. I guess I just assume that if someone in the public eye is soliciting donations, then they'll go to charity.

Didn't something similar happen with Captain Tom during Covid now that I think about it.

Surely that is a big loophole though, the one about private individuals collecting donations. Why wouldn't the charoty regulator step in and ensure that the money was going to where it had been pormised?

Because the 'charity regulator' only has any legal power over Charities?
It's like saying "why doesn't 'the government' stop parents spending money on themselves instead of their kids?" Can't be done.

Been stung myself promising money to individuals for good causes and never getting proof it did. Registered charities (whose books I've checked) all the way now.

wellhelloitsme · 01/10/2022 19:16

That poor dog 😞

GoldenGorilla · 01/10/2022 20:27

I think the single weirdest thing about her is that she says she wants to provide free recipes to help people cook well on a budget, but if anybody else ever dares to offer advice/recipes that can be made cheaply, she is furious and says they’re stealing her niche, and that it was her idea.

As though she’s the first person in the world to think about how to cook cheaply! And as though nobody but her is allowed to do this important thing.

HardLanding · 01/10/2022 20:30

Re the Patreon, it’s a minimum of £2500 a month, assuming most of them are on the £3.50 tier, but it’s increasingly the top 2 tiers that are complaining - the top one is £44 a month. I’d wager she’s taking around £4000 a month minimum. For fuck all.

MrsMorton · 01/10/2022 20:38

How does they square the specialist groomer for the dog, with boiling soap to make shower gel.

Because the latter never happened.

HilarityEnsues · 01/10/2022 20:47

There are many things that are expensive in this life, but shower gel is not one of them, it's 99p or less at PoundLand. Very odd thing to try to make more cheaply. Also if you have soap, why not use soap, I do!

WaddleAway · 01/10/2022 20:50

HardLanding · 01/10/2022 20:38

Oh it probably happened once, bored on a Saturday afternoon at home and faffing around making social media content to make it look like she’s helping poor people.
Probably cost her a damn sight more than a bottle of shower gel too.

Nothing with Jack adds up.

ChocChipOwl · 01/10/2022 20:57

She's had a tantrum about the comments regarding the dog

I can believe the dog is well cared for and brushed just fine

The problem now for jack is that she tells SO many lies and has pissed off so many people, that they're just looking for stuff now

You mean like the dead kitten when she ignored all the vets advice and it died alone in serious amounts of pain? Or the dead rabbit that she left in the cold, dark garage? Or the countless other animals that she’s had that have suddenly never been mentioned again and who’s photos she’s erased from social media?

Theres photos of the dog from 2 weeks ago when she claims they were fresh out of the groomers. Dog wasn’t groomed then, isn’t groomed now and probably never has been.

WaddleAway · 01/10/2022 22:38

I have no idea about dogs and their coats so no idea whether it’s matted or not, but it’s hilarious that she’s taken her own brand of snark/aggression from Twitter to Instagram.

The problem with her poverty cosplay is that she does things like have a weekend break in Venice, another in an other European destination in the space of a month and then writes a blog a couple of weeks later saying she is so poor that she has had to unscrew her lightbulbs, switching off her heating etc.

Another one was the lie she had not washed her hair using shampoo for two years yet had a haircut from Toni and Guy which was featured on both her and their social media accounts.

There are too many incidents like that to take her poverty cosplay seriously.

So she's quit Twitter so she can argue with people on Instagram. Revolutionary.
