Jack Monroe off Twitter

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

Hopefully she’s getting some professional advice about clearing up all the mess and putting things right re the fundraisers/Patreon etc. If she has, they’d have certainly told her to keep off Twitter as she has a tendency to make things 10 times worse when she goes off on one of her Twitter rants.

I’d like to think this is the case but it’s unlikely, she doesn’t seem to have the necessary capacity for self reflection and accountability. More likely stewing over the ‘trolls’ who are calling her out.

JemimaTab · 01/12/2022 07:15

I tend to agree. But there’s really no coming back for her IMO unless she does address the money issues and shows some self-reflection.

JubileeTrifle · 01/12/2022 08:29

She won’t address it as people will want their money back. I suspect it’s a lot of money that she can’t/won’t pay back.

Yeah she’s stuck really. If she addresses it she’ll draw people’s attention to it and they’ll cancel or ask for a refund. I bet there are quite a few people who have almost forgotten they pay her, it just comes out of their bank account every month and they don’t even think about it.
Equally if she carries on like this then she’s opening herself up to further scrutiny and potentially fraud investigations.

Who are these ‘trolls’ she constantly refers to? She’s in a gated community on Twitter, so how are the trolls getting to her? Or does she mean the blog, MN etc?

It’s the website that can’t be named on here. Rhymes with cattle. They have hundreds and hundreds of threads on her, and a very extensive wiki. Very eye opening.

category12 · 01/12/2022 10:24

She's been saying she's abused by trolls online for years and years, even before Tattle started their threads on her. (Isn't it just links there that are removed? We'll see if my post vanishes 😂as a test ).

It's an ongoing theme for her. She no doubt does get abuse, like any public figure (especially women). But she was saying she was being driven to desperation by trolling at various times long before.

I think in the Guardian comments when she was doing regular bits for them she was decrying naysayers as trolls then.

Like I say, I do believe she gets trolled, but she also lumps in any sort of criticism as trolling as well.

WaddleAway · 01/12/2022 10:51

Anyone who disagrees with her is a troll.

category12 · 01/12/2022 11:05

A more succinct way of putting it 😂

Doesn't look like the Patreon thing is going away in a hurry

What maddens me is that I used to really like her. I think that opening people’s eyes to the reality of living in poverty is hugely important. I work in a school with 50% of our children having free school meals. I see it every day.

I didn’t realise her recipes were so shit, I’d never looked at them that closely.
I believed her.

I felt the same, and that not only did poverty exist but that it could affect anyone. As someone who went though a (thankfully brief) phase of being utterly skint and struggling for enough money for food AND heating, I thought she was doing a good thing.

I will be honest though, I do like a few of her recipes. She did one for cauliflower passanda which I really like, and a nut roast which I bloody love, plus a white chocolate loaf cake which turned out surprisingly well.

frogface69 · 01/12/2022 12:40

She's back posting about cleaning a kettle.Breadcrumbing about her mental health and being all am ok pixie. Sigh.
no mention of fulfilling her Patreon responsibilities, or the VBI, which never existed anyway. She is laughing at her supporters.

frogface69 · 01/12/2022 12:42

I mean smol pixie. She does my head in.

I can honestly say that the (v. few) recipes I did try were sh*te - they really were appalling, and the portions were tiny. No way could anyone living on them have a) enjoyed them, b) got sufficient calories, or c) had a nutritionally balanced diet.

I gave up on them and turned to Bernadine Lawrence's book which wasn't nearly as big, flashy or colourful, but had recipes that work and fill you up, too.

I don't know how JM has got to where she is while BL has faded into obscurity in culinary terms. Shameless self-promotion, probably. And a little help from her influential friends/ lovers who gently, tenderly, persistently promote her to jobs on the telly that she can't do because she hasn't a clue how to actually cook.

Some of her recipes are influenced* by other cooks. Maybe you struck lucky and hit on some of these.

*She admitted at one point that she sometimes accidentally gives other people's recipes, because she reads so many cookery books that sometimes she thinks she's invented something, and it turns out she hasn't. 😶

Alternatively by the Law of Averages, one has got to come out ok occasionally.

Emotionalsupportviper · 01/12/2022 12:57

I have no idea how I managed to italicise so much of that post. 😦

Crikeyalmighty · 01/12/2022 13:58

To be frank, more nutritious and tastier and feeds two, tipping a whole tin of ratatouille onto some whole grain cheap pasta twirls and a sprinkling of dried grated Parmesan plus a generous grate of black pepper. Easy peasy- very cheap and nutritious.

She should get a proper job and stop being a parasite. Then her mental health might improve.

Emotionalsupportviper · 01/12/2022 14:18

Perhaps she hopes a Genie will spring from that kettle and all of her troubles will be over . . .

AnonWeeMouse · 01/12/2022 14:38

Poking around twitter, it's been noticed that the pot had.been polished before in 2017... Jack shared it.on Instagram and apparently it took just 2 minutes back then.

Vigorous repetitive hand motions, considering hers claimed to have arthritic hands and such..

And yet the Followers can't see the glaring inconsistencies.

At this point I wouldn't trust her if she said the sky was blue.

Omg she is really crazy to do that

category12 · 01/12/2022 17:46

And yet the Followers can't see the glaring inconsistencies.

But most people aren't going to bother committing to memory when some minor personality last mentioned polishing her kettle 😁.

It's not interesting, it would pass through their timelines barely noticed, they might "like" it at the time but never think about it much then or ever again. 5 years later, even if you saw it first time round, you probably wouldn't remember.

It's only when your eyes open, either because of something more outrageous or you start to get annoyed with her for something, that you might start looking more deeply.

I do think this thread is distasteful tbh. It is very clear to anybody who has even glanced at her twitter she is very, very vulnerable and in very poor mental health. Does anyone posting here genuinely not think she is clearly very mentally unwell ?

She is clearly mentally ill , she is a recovering alcoholic , and has attempted suicide several times , as well as self harm. With that background, is it really necessary to go to the stalky level of obtaining floor plans for her house, investigating what colour she ahs painted her walls and mocking her ?

If you think her recipes are shit, just don't buy her cookery books. No one is forced to buy them, it's hardly a con.

This all smacks of bullying a little tbh.

We only know about all of those things because Jack has told us.

They might not be true.

Her relationship with truth is unique.
