Jack Monroe off Twitter

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

The best thing is that you can't really fuck up flavours in that because you can take teaspoon of bean sauce and try to add what you fancy to see if it works. That way you don't ruin the whole meal.

Now that is a budget skill imho budget chefs should promote to people who are not really confident and have very little ingredients so they can't fuck it up

Applesandcarrots · 25/11/2022 22:52

Absolutely. If you are looking to uplift budget rood you don't do this.
What you do is to add to the beans and toast, not atke away and replace.
Spice the beans up with some home basics.
Add tomato puree and italian type herbs, or bbq sauce and maybe some chili, squeeze (or drops from bottle) of lemon? Or just herbs! Garlic. Hmmm.
Fry onion and garlic, add the beans and sauce bit of Worcestershire?
I am proper freestyling here so sorry if I am being bit JM with weird combos.
Also bbq baked beans are freaking delicious.

Or put a sprinkling of cheese or a fried egg on top.

A coupled of chopped up hot dogs or sausages, or a slice of bacon if you can spare them, cooked and added to the beans.

AnonWeeMouse · 25/11/2022 23:29

Here's my suped up Beans on toast..

Beans. In a bowl.
Sprinkle of grated cheddar, just a little.
Instead of toast.. have a cheese sandwich..
Dip the sandwhich in the hot beans..
Food. Of. The. God's. 🤪

However as I say, if her activities don't add up then why would the BBC and the Guardian give her a platform. You would have thought they would check out her story and her charitable activities. Especially the BBC as I would imagine they are quite strict about vetting presenters these days.

They are both abysmal at any kind of research, if any is even attempted. You'd be surprised how close the circles are between media and charity CEOs.

See: Kids Company, Alex Bellfield, Mermaids etc.

NewBootsAndRanty · 25/11/2022 23:40

My best beans adaptation is frying garlic and mushrooms in a fair bit of oil, adding it (inc the oil) to a tin of beans, and heating it all through til it turns to stodge.

Well I am awaiting some posters here getting their book deals 👍

Why would you rinse of the TOMATO sauce & then add TOMATOES???

Baffling. Her “Canned OJ” recipe uses similar logic (if you can call it that). In summary: take a can of mandarins, drain them of their juice, then blend them with a little water to make .. er, mandarin juice. Why would you discard the juice from the can ? It makes no sense.

Presumably she's using the cheaper ones that come in syrup?

What maddens me is that I used to really like her. I think that opening people’s eyes to the reality of living in poverty is hugely important. I work in a school with 50% of our children having free school meals. I see it every day.

I didn’t realise her recipes were so shit, I’d never looked at them that closely.
I believed her.

I mean… what’s your point? That it doesn’t matter if her recipes are badly costed, poorly written and don’t work, because at least she’s got a book deal?

Sorry - should have read ahead - others have beaten me to it.

My point was that some here did better😂

Applesandcarrots · 26/11/2022 08:52

Lol oissed your second one @WaddleAway 🙈

FKATondelayo · 26/11/2022 10:04

That Penne Al Pomodoro recipe reminds me of this old Armando Iannucci sketch How To Be An Adult

"Take a tin of tomatoes and an ANYVEGETABLE and tada! An acceptable pasta sauce."

It's about one minute in:

In fact, his recipe is probably more appetising and nutritious.

She seems to be taking credit for Marie Kondo’s ideas now…

Yes - a simple "I read this lovely little book by MK where she suggested etc" would have made the world of difference, wouldn't it? Does she think no-one notices these things?

category12 · 26/11/2022 16:06

She probably thinks she did invent it. She seems prone to thinking that she's an original thinker, yet others have got there before her.

After all, she was publicly angry at Jamie Oliver for getting in her "niche" - which is a bit of a cheek considering he'd released Save with Jamie way back in 2013. Budget cookery isn't something she invented (or Jamie for that matter).

Problem is, if you haven't heard of Marie Kondo or seen her stuff, you might very well believe Jack's retread of it is original.

I'd forgotten all of the people who pop into the future, steal JM's ideas and then nip back again to cash in on them.

No wonder she gets a bit testy. 😄

I used to really like JM too, I was a single mum on benefits at the same time as she was and thought she spoke for people like me. I thought some of her stuff was a bit OTT like unscrewing lightbulbs (I've since done anti poverty work in my community and never known of anyone else do that) but overall I thought she was doing good work in highlighting how tough it was was for some people.

I kept following her and loads of stuff didn't add up over the years but it's only fairly recently my opinion has totally changed.

I had a look at the website which can't be mentioned recently and she pulled almost the exact same stunt in 2015 as she has recently. That time she stood on the edge of a traintrack and almost jumped because of online abuse/ death threats but didn't do it because of her child. She left Twitter for a few days.

In 2021 exactly the same thing happens, almost commits suicide because of trolling but is saved by other people and doesn't do it because of her child. She left Twitter for a few days.

It's really horrible playing with people's emotions like that.

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/11/2022 22:06

She's remarkably quiet.

She's either moving into her new, patreon-paid-for gaff, or her publishers have her bound and gagged in a cellar to stop her buggering up sales even further.

JemimaTab · 01/12/2022 01:19

Hopefully she’s getting some professional advice about clearing up all the mess and putting things right re the fundraisers/Patreon etc. If she has, they’d have certainly told her to keep off Twitter as she has a tendency to make things 10 times worse when she goes off on one of her Twitter rants.
