Jack Monroe off Twitter

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

Imagine an example.
There is lots of dog poop on a street one day. I go and tweet local council that it needs cleaning and maybe they should do a regular clean up rota.
They answer and say, as anyone on SM or in customer service, "thank you we will look into it and take your comments away to consider"

Next day the poop is cleaned!
People do "yaaay! Long live Apples! Council now has cleaning rota" And omg there is now a published rota for cleaning crew! Long live me, I say! I made council create a rota!

Doesn't matter to anyone that it was just luck I tweeted day before crew were due and Council had that rota for years but decided to publish it now due to comments....

Same happened with Asda. But no organisation will really say "hang on, you know this was already in place?"...

Jack likes to claim credit for a lot of things she has nothing to do with. For some reason (possibly because she has the endorsement of people like Nigella), a lot of the press just take her word for it and don’t look deeper. At least that is starting to change.
People have already mentioned the “Vimes Boots Index”, the alternative index that Jack said she was working on, and this is often mentioned as if it exists. It does not. She said, last January, that this would take “a weekend” to produce. We are still waiting. And the ONS had already announced changes to their index which Jack has since attempted to take credit for.
Another example is that Jack has claimed to have been consulted on the National Food Strategy. Like all Government consultations, the NFS Report contained a (very long) list of all the individuals, groups, charities and companies that had been consulted. Pages and pages of acknowledgements from all sides of the political spectrum. Jack’s name doesn’t appear at all.
At one point, she tried to take credit for Healthy Start vouchers, even though these started when she was 18.
She’s also acted like a spoilt brat when other people get credit for initiatives she thinks she should have been involved with. Jamie Oliver’s lock-down show being a well-known example. She tried to claim for a while that she was working closely with Marcus Rashford (this turned out just to be an interview she did with him for GQ about his school meals initiative in which she managed to talk mostly about herself). And when Tom Kerridge and Marcus Rashford launched their Full Time Meals campaign, Jack tried to make out that Tom had nicked his recipes from her.
And so on.
Everything she says needs to be independently verified.

Earlier in the week, The Guardian advertised tickets to this livestream event. They received a torrent of comments asking about Teemill and Patreon and questioning why they would give her a platform. The tweet was subsequently deleted and the event was cancelled.

I think that most of the people posting here and elsewhere genuinely want to protect people from investing money in someone who won't deliver what's promised. But there will always be those who see a bandwagon and ride it too far.

Shock

The most appalling example in my opinion is Grenfel tragedy.

She tried to claim that she was a firefighter and she'd seen hundreds of fires. Claimed she got tons of contacts and gathered architects and fire experts. I think she even claimed she was waved through the security Corden by a guard who recognised her.. (which also happened, according to her, at the Houses of parliament...)

Trying to centre herself in a national tragedy is absolutely abhorrent behaviour. She later deleted the blog post... But it is still available as an archived version that is easily googled.

00100001 · 24/11/2022 14:02

Yeah the "I've seen hundreds of fires" is rather implying she was a fire fighter, especially when posting a photo of her in a fire fighter outfit...

I mean, I've seen hundreds of fires. I lit church candles for years and have built dozens of bonfires and also log burner fires. So, yeah, technically hundreds of fires I've seen... I also have a photo of me dressed up as a firefighter from an open event... But I wouldn't imply anything, and I fact would make it clear that I was not a serving firefighter in case there was any doubt!

JubileeTrifle · 24/11/2022 15:13

You have to have some balls to be in the public eye and pretend to have been a firefighter like that.
I think getting away with the Grenfell stuff must make you feel invincible. She should have been cancelled even, ghoulish behaviour.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/11/2022 16:40

And what's the thing that's been deleted by a pp recently?

Applesandcarrots · 24/11/2022 16:40

Certain forum link

myrtleWilson · 24/11/2022 16:50

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy - she didn't pretend to have been an active firefighter on duty at Grenfell, but she did download building plans and pull together a crack team of experts (including herself "I've seen hundreds of fires") and set about working out what had gone wrong whilst volunteering.

She no doubt imagined herself as a scandi noir ex fire chief who felt compelled to return to the front line and work the scene with her collection of maverick mates - basically she was cos playing CSI:Fire on the back of a national tragedy and disgrace

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/11/2022 16:50

No I definitely remember the thing about the Asda prices. She had a while list of smart prices from a few years ago and the new prices. When she tweeted the prices Asda then reduced their prices back to the original list she had produced

That didn't happen and she wasn't comparing like for like anyway. She claimed that rice had gone up some stupid percentage because she couldn't find the smartprice rice in the Asda at the end of her road even though it was still available in the larger stores. It was very likely down to supply and demand anyway (i.e if no one in her local Asda was buying it, they wouldn't bother stocking it) plus Asda were about to change their branding on the smart price stuff and move to their current yellow packaging.

It was a different products.
Smart price spaghetti were never 70p.
Asda own was.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/11/2022 17:07

I see! Well I have never bee keen on her and then realised a fair few months ago she was a grifter but some of these stories are crazy.
She needs help

She implies that she was. Not directly stating.

In fairness, and we must be fair, the begging/tag line starts with "I served as a Fire Control Operator for Essex Fire and Rescue Service from 2007 to 2011."

However, she also goes on to say

"I’ve seen a lot of fucking fires, I remarked as I turned the corner, but never… I trail off, feet grind to a halt, as I am waved through the Police cordon by a stony-faced officer."

She so posted the attached photo and caption, which heavily implies she's a firefighter that is doing Flashover training.

It's not overt, but, you could be mistaken for thinking she was actually a firefighter if you don't read the article critically and carefully.

They didn't do that because of Jack though no matter what Jack implied.

National price planning by one of the biggest supermarkets is absolutely not influenced by a small time blogger alone and in such a short time. National price/long term price reductions are not a knee jerk reaction. It will have been planned carefully and would actually be in reaction to national and (possibly) international events, pricing, sourcing, marketing objectives etc

Yes, they acknowledged her thoughts and that they took them on board, but at no point have they said "Because of Jack ( and Jack alone ) we have changed our prices".

Funnily enough, because she had fuck all todo with it apart from being one of many people observing that prices had increased.

Infuriatingly, asda's comms did exactly what anyone with sense of self preservation would do.
Rather than trying to explain it was different products and she was mistaken, they just nodded, did their thing and rolled their eyes secretly. Because if they tried, imagine the tirade about how they are trying to hide increases etc and the pr disaster
