Jack Monroe off Twitter

1000 replies

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

She implies that she was. Not directly stating.

In fairness, and we must be fair, the begging/tag line starts with "I served as a Fire Control Operator for Essex Fire and Rescue Service from 2007 to 2011."

However, she also goes on to say

"I’ve seen a lot of fucking fires, I remarked as I turned the corner, but never… I trail off, feet grind to a halt, as I am waved through the Police cordon by a stony-faced officer."

She so posted the attached photo and caption, which heavily implies she's a firefighter that is doing Flashover training.

It's not overt, but, you could be mistaken for thinking she was actually a firefighter if you don't read the article critically and carefully.

web.archive.org/web/20170711192841/cookingonabootstrap.com/2017/06/16/we-need-to-talk-about-grenfell/

I agree that we need to be completely fair about this. She did stare at the beginning that she was a call handler but that makes the rest of it seem worse.
Who was she to state she’d seen a lot of fires? Who were these people that she gathered around her to look at blue prints that she got from who knows where?

She could have made some solid points about the families who lived there. About the poverty they faced and the choices they made. She could have written about them, but no, she made it all about her.

Had a loot at twitter after my laugh at "the forum that shall not be named" post here to see what's up.
Publisher seems to be donating books to TT.
While that is of course lovely gesture, one can only hope the recipes in this one are better than many on the website🙈
But wow. So many people replying with notes about the scams to blue tick accounts which didn't happen before.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/11/2022 18:40

What's TT?
I am so out of the loop I can barely make sense of your post @BosaNova !

BosaNova · 24/11/2022 18:42

Trussel Trust.

Tbh I don't think it's you. That sounds bit like nonsensical post

Basically that publisher is saying that if you pay £19 for a copy, they will donate a copy to the Trussel Trust. Except most other retailers are selling the book for £10 (or less) anyway. It seems a fairly calculated way of getting sales numbers up and ensuring Jack gets full commission.
Why would food bank users want the book anyway? The recipes don’t work. And there is a free downloadable version of the recipes available anyway. Better to give the cash or the equivalent amount in food donations to the food bank, that would do far more good.

AnonWeeMouse · 24/11/2022 19:14

She messed up publishing her blog,
"Hunger Hurts 2: HungyMcHungyFace"

Too many people took note and wondered what the hell. 10nyears as an activist, years claiming patreon, years claiming kickstarters and she's still boiling soap?.. it stinks worse than one of her rinsed butt hole recipes.

Then people googled and found 'The Voldemort Forum' and then Awfully Molly came along and laid it all out, Katie Roche did a piece, others on Twitter pointed stuff out, asked questions, some asked less than politely..

Now, every word she says is met with forensic checking. Every person that says anything about her is met with a barrage of links to a wiki or Awfully Molly.

The flying monkeys were her protection... But they're about as scary as kittens wearing mittens now. All that's left are the socks she uses to argue with people and the Bots that that prop up the follower count.

Her new Sloppery Book will come out and be a damp squib.

Then her life story.. that's a huge mistake on her part. There will be endless people forensically looking through that pile of pompous prose and they'll point out every inconsistency with screen shots to back it up.
She shouldn't publish her autobiography, it will be an absolute dumpster fire.
Every page will end up scanned and held next to a tweet or blog that says different and she won't be able to keep up with it all.
Narc rage will make her implode and she's going to end up old and alone and a seething mass of slop powered pent up and frustrated ball of inner rage.

OneFrenchEgg · 24/11/2022 19:31

Is the boiling soap a joke? Like an exaggeration and not something she said? Because I don't understand why you wouldn't just use the bar in the shower? And lather it up? Or is it to share?

JubileeTrifle · 24/11/2022 19:44

She said she boiled soap because she couldn’t afford shower gel. She also said she hadn’t been able to buy shampoo for 2 years. But a few months before had her hair cut by a senior stylist at Toni and Guy.

I think her obsession that supermarket food should be dirt cheap is very damaging. It doesn’t account for the chain of people behind each product who need to be paid. It’s suggesting that supermarkets should be these altruistic businesses who exist to give stuff away. She doesn’t even understand how supermarkets price their food and why they sell some items at a loss. After 10 years you’d think she would have educated herself a bit.

She said she was going to visit the poorest places in the U.K. as part of her fantasy Vimes Index project, I’m so glad she didn’t.

No...

"I haven’t bought shampoo or conditioner for two years, and I make my own shower gel by boiling cheap soap bars in plenty of water until they dissolve, and then leaving them to set."

This fascinating article where she claims her "food shop is still around £20 a week".

She can't "get out of the [rental] contract, so have been paying 94% of my income on the rent and bills every month ever since" yes. NINETY FOUR PERCENT.

she makes the claim of having "various meagre income streams"

And apparently decided to sell all her possessions 4 months ago...

Sucker. My top up shops are way less.
Feeling proper superior here

Well, tnf, she didn't explicitly say she couldn't afford the shower gel so she boiled soap instead.

She said she hadn't "bought shampoo or conditioner for two years, and I make my own shower gel by boiling cheap soap bars in plenty of water until they dissolve, and then leaving them to set."

But it was in the middle of a woe is me poverty poverty poverty, I'm not earning , im selling everything of value, debts, poverty hangover wah waah waaaaaaaaah article.

So the implication of not being able to afford shampoo is there. She does this a lot.

My food shop of £19.68 a week. Bargain, eating for £20.is absolutely achievable.

Prior to the weekly shop, I did a £350 a monthly shop.

Soooo, I'm.not actually lying about my food shop each week... Ha!

OneFrenchEgg · 24/11/2022 20:00

I still don't understand the soap thing. Is it a hack im missing? I buy really cheap shower gel (80p a bottle) which lasts week maybe with the teens.

OneFrenchEgg · 24/11/2022 20:03

Ok I googled. It's a thing. But much as I love the idea of experimenting I cba to leave a pot of melted soap around for 14 hours.

Applesandcarrots · 24/11/2022 20:07

Anything is a thing @OneFrenchEgg 😂
Not so long ago prople drunk own piss to loose weight. I am sure they still do!

The fact that it's on google doesn't make it nonsensical and money waste😁

Shesasuperfreak · 24/11/2022 20:28

Gosh, I didn't think that forum post was going to go.

They keep track of everything on there. I came across it after searching grenfell and Jack Monroe.

They have been documenting everything for years it seem. Some of the thread titles 😲.

yes it's a thing which is fine.

but not fine when implying you have to do this because of poverty reasons. It is plainly nonsensical to melt down perfectly good soap, use electricity or gas to heat it up, in order to make shower gel. when you can just either use the soap as it is, or buy the shower gel for less money than the cost of making the gel.

As far as I know, Jack has never publicly revealed her address so whoever has gone and found her plans sounds like some kind of obsessed stalker.

Why do you care whether or not she has gone to a conference in Wales today?

I’ve just looked online, her full address is available on 192.com for a small fee (as is anyone’s). Took me all of 5 seconds.

I can see why someone would be fed up of her claims enough and get her address and look up the pictures/floor plan on Zoopla. (Not me!)

Againstmachine · 24/11/2022 21:32

She implies that she was. Not directly stating.

She's also implies she had cancer oven though she didn't she's proper vile.

That's it. People are calling people stalkers they dont realise how much of their info is available.

WaddleAway · 24/11/2022 21:57

Also, she posts so much identifying info that anyone who lives in the area will easily know where she lives.

Is she planning to do a book on her life story? I must have missed that! Yes that would be a crashingly bad error of judgment.

Hunger hurts two was the final straw I think. It went straight to the heart of the wildly contradictory story. Painting a picture of abject poverty when her tweets portrayed a life with a new (expensive) puppy and a large house stuffed with high end possessions.

It's a Memoir and has an Amazon page already:

Untitled Jack Monroe memoir amzn.eu/d/0Mj2ZJC

It's going to be a bin fire... And she's likely already got an advance for it..

Where has she said she's publishing her life story? Agree it would be a terrible idea. Can't imagine a publisher would take that on now.

I don't know if she herself has announced it, but it's got an International book number, a publication date, a listing on Amazon and other websites etc.
