Jack Monroe off Twitter

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

So how did she get her big break? I thought she must have had some skill/ experience?

Having listened to the radio 4 show about the fake heiress I can see how a grifter can get places. However I'd say you have to be relatively consistent with your messaging. Seems odd for JM to have made it this far on - possibly - so little talent

She had a journalist friend and managed to get her blog published, with her story about being in poverty. It went from there really, and she ended up with a column in the Guardian. Since then she’s had some high profile relationships with media personalities which helped it along.
I think the reason the media courted her was because she was an ‘acceptable’ face of poverty.

WaddleAway · 10/11/2022 11:55

Oh and her last book only sold approx 3000 copies.

JemimaTab · 10/11/2022 16:27

I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if Jack’s budget food career all started off as an idea for a newspaper story, and it all got a bit out of hand. It’s been The Emperor’s New Clothes ever since.

Every so often. Pretty much as per recipe (I think?)
I use a tin of chick peas, and a tin of sliced peaches (rinse the syrup off), tin of Toms etc
however, it is a sweet curry, so depends if you like that sweet/savoury combo etc

But it's nice to me.

If you've rinsed your peaches, you've effectively tweaked the recipe, because she recommends reserving the juice and adding it to the sauce

www.nigella.com/recipes/guests/jack-monroes-peach-and-chickpea-curry

In another version, mandarins or apricots are interchangeable with peaches

CatJumperTwat · 10/11/2022 17:36

Yep, steak and mandarins. Classic combination.

😂

Absolutely!

Not just picking any two ingredients at random and flinging them together with a pinch of nutmeg (or if you don't have nutmeg, put a banana in; or some mozzarella, or cat biscuit - it'll be equally tasty and equally nutritious), No, sirree, all carefully thought out and fully tested . . .

Ostryga · 10/11/2022 20:02

I started off finding the Slopalong completely hilarious, but once it was pointed out how completely and utterly awful it is for people to have good faith in these recipes it enraged me. People who have little money to spend anyway hoping to make something lovely and it ending up sloppy vile. I despise her.

She’s a charlatan and deserves to be cancelled in the truest sense of the word. How she sleeps at night I’ll never know.

frogface69 · 10/11/2022 21:21

It strikes me that nobody has ever tested those recipes. How many books has she had published ? 7 I think. And people like Nigella Lawson and Jay Rayner have been vocal supporters. They obviously haven't tried her recipes, so how could they in all honesty endorse her ?

Unfortunately I suspect they (Nigella, Jay, Nigel, and all Jack’s other cheerleaders) think these are recipes that are good enough for poor people, not that they would eat them themselves. Patronising in the extreme. It’s pretty clear they haven’t really looked at the recipes in any detail.
Even leaving aside whether the recipes are palatable or not, the nutritional content is a disgrace. Jack has obviously made a point of minimising portion sizes so as to make them as cheap as possible, but what does that achieve when you’re looking at (in some cases) meals with only 200-ish calories?
(This is based on some of the meals recorded on the Slopalong thread, when posters have calculated the nutrition).

They think it’s good enough for the poors. They would never dream of eating it.

Emotionalsupportviper · 10/11/2022 21:47

How she sleeps at night I’ll never know.

Probably in a handmade bed between 100 count Egyptian cotton sheets, paid for by her poverty-stricken followers, @Ostryga

Lunde · 11/11/2022 12:37

I am just stunned by the Slopalong. It is clear that she never tests her "recipes" actually work and it seems that many are stolen from other cooks with a few (unfortunately key) ingredients changed.

Some of her "recipe ideas" appear to actually cost more and give worse results! Like the one where she mixes cake mix with tinned custard instead of an egg - and creates a cake brick

.... or where she recreates beans in tomato sauce but starts off rinsing a tin of baked beans under the tap - WTAF - why not just eat the beans and save the other ingredients and electric for another meal?

chillinean · 11/11/2022 13:40

Shock That's mind boggling and wasteful. Buy a kilogram or so of dried beans if you wanted to recreate them cheaply.

Lunde · 11/11/2022 15:54

I mean when I was a student in the austerity period of the early 1980s I used to mix a tin of baked beans, a tin of sweetcorn and curry powder to eek it out for 2 meals ... but I never claimed to be a food writer

OtterOnToast · 11/11/2022 16:21

@Lunde well you clearly missed your calling there didn't you?

CatJumperTwat · 11/11/2022 17:09

Sounds nicer than some of Jack's recipes, Lunde!

I was enjoying the Twitter parody account but she keeps posting her Ko-Fi link unironically. You can't really mock somebody for grifting and then do it yourself.

Ostryga · 11/11/2022 17:34

WTAF - why not just eat the beans and save the other ingredients and electric for another meal?

Christ don’t use logic @Lunde, you’ll do yourself a mischief!

chisum · 11/11/2022 20:14

She reminds me a bit of my sister who makes horrible cakes. Doesn't follow a proper recipe or weigh anything, just chucks in some flour, sugar, couple of eggs etc and seems surprised that it doesn't come out edible. It's not artistic, or maverick or intuitive... just sloppy.

Emotionalsupportviper · 11/11/2022 22:44

This is interesting

Even the dog can't be *rsed with her. 🙄

Crikey. Has that dog ever been groomed ?

So even on her 'blue tick' you can only comment if she follows you?...
