Jack Monroe off Twitter

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

You are obviously worth fighting for @category12 .

A modern day Helen of Troy. 😁

😂😂

@Emotionalsupportviper sorry but could I just ask for clarification on that quote?

Am I really reading that you could save the water from boiling eggs and freeze it to maybe use as a hot scrubby flannel wash?

Am I?

Surely I can't be.

I was about to mention the slopalong thread too. As bad as all the inconsistencies and lack of transparency about donations is, the results of her recipes upset me most.

7 cookbooks full of untested recipes, that in practice turn out to be barely edible. And all aimed at the people who can least afford to experiment or waste food.

I may not be a huge fan of any of the celebrities who publish cookbooks, but I do feel relatively confident that if I pick up a recipe from Jaime Oliver or Gordon Ramsey, it will make something I can eat.

Jamie Oliver is good. I am what in the olden days was kindly described as a "plain cook". That is to say I am not very adventurous. Plus, a small budget. So I don't want to risk making something my kids will not eat or that will go wrong.

With Jamie I know if I follow his recipe to the letter it will come out nice. His recipes are not intimidating and are simple to follow. Some of Jack's recipes clal for a lot of ingredients, some of them quite random. And, lots and lots of steps. I don't have time for that. Also all her recipes seem to involve blitzing things in a food processor. I don't have that.

Yes - it was a sarcastic parody of a certain working middle class autistic non-binary bisexual lesbian social campaigning heavily tattooed exam-failing budget cookery writer by someone who was testing out one of said writer's recipes.

It involved (IIRC) boiling 2 eggs, chopping them up (in a cup) and then serving them with toast. Obviously she wastes NOTHING (except for the sauce from spaghetti hoops).

I like Jamie's "Ministry of Food"

Good food and decent portions..

She's a very odd character, isn't she? Seems quite posh with lots of designer gear but yet bangs on about never having any money. Very strange, I bought a few of her books when she first appeared and they were full of unappealing, sloppy recipes.

I think the reason she never has any money could possibly be that she spends it all on sideboards and kitchen chairs and tattoos and hair cuts at Toni and Guys, instead of budgeting properly

@Emotionalsupportviper parody! Parody! Jesus Christ missed that.

I'm recovering from covid. That's my excuse 😀

OtterOnToast · 09/11/2022 16:37

For me, the stand out recipe was some curry with tinned peaches 🤮

Don't blame yourself.

Monroe's prose is so purple that it is a parody of itself, and you can hardly be expected to recognise a leg-pull immediately.

The fact that anyone could be taken in by it tells you just how far she has gone along the road of self-aggrandisement

It was certainly . . . original.

IIRC it wasn't even specified to have peaches in juice . . . I'll bet a lot of people used peaches in syrup.

Many years ago when we were almost literally on the bones of our *rses, I got hold of her book from a charity shop. i tried one recipe (a sardine thing) - it was a) minging, and b) not enough of it to feed a family of white mice, let alone 2 adults and 2 kids.

A quick flick through the book revealed that it was very likely to be the same for every one of them.

I re-donated it.

Ooh, did you do it as per recipe or tweak it? Do you have it regularly?

frogface69 · 09/11/2022 19:39

Awfullymolly has updated her blog. I can't link on my device (on loan from work and I have to be careful)but OMG...It's damning.

OtterOnToast · 09/11/2022 22:45

@frogface69 I can't see a new post? Desperate too of course Grin

I don’t believe Jack tests her recipes. It looks like she leaves everything to the last minute - her latest book was way overdue (as much as 2 years overdue I think), and seemed to have been compiled from scrappy little bits of paper, some were just incomplete lists of ingredients. (She posted photos of all this on Twitter FFS). She was still doing substantial edits only recently. And I suppose all this time her publishers were on her back trying to get an actual book out of her. I just don’t see that this chaotic process would leave any time for recipe testing, and it would explain why so many of the recipes don’t work.
There are so many more talented food writers out there who would give their right arm for a book contract like Jack’s. Doesn’t really seem right.

Every so often. Pretty much as per recipe (I think?)
I use a tin of chick peas, and a tin of sliced peaches (rinse the syrup off), tin of Toms etc
however, it is a sweet curry, so depends if you like that sweet/savoury combo etc

But it's nice to me.

On an episode of DKL she said she’s ‘one and done’, ie she makes the recipe once, writes down what she did, and that’s that.

Well that is fucking disgraceful when you're writing a cook book to not test and test, but even more sowhen you're trying to market your crappy cookbooks to food banks and as a thing to use when you're skint etc.

How lazy and to admit that on tv, then she questions why Jamie Oliver gets shows etc, well he tests his recipes for a start.

Definitely.

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 10/11/2022 09:35

Jack can't cook for shit. I'm baffled she just announced herself a chef and that was that. No qualifications, no experience or years of extensive training and work. She just threw some tins together and made various bizarre mashups. She's actually bamboozled a whole nation. I can't believe it to this day. There needs to be a full blown Netflix original on it. 🤣

Explains much - though TBH it wouldn't surprise me to learn that a lot of them aren't even made once, and are just random cheap ingredients with an added pinch of "whatever herb-or-spice" (1p) because that would work, wouldn't it?@ 😬
