Jack Monroe off Twitter

1000 replies

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

@Emotionalsupportviper

I follow her on the Guardian (I forgot to unfollow in my defence) and they usually send notifications of new articles don't they, but she hasn't posted anything there, not for a long time.

Reminder to be kind

I'll be kind to those the deserve it.
JM doesn't deserve it, she lies, she takes money under false pretences and she's proven many times that #BeKind doesn't apply to her.

Reminder to be kind

How about kindly stopping your milksop attempts to police discussions? If you think people are crossing lines, report those posts. Otherwise stop being sanctimonious.

I bet you're not even reading what's been said, just popping into to repeat your line thinking you're Mary Poppins or something.

AnonWeeMouse · 12/11/2022 10:15

MichelleScarn · 12/11/2022 09:40

So even on her 'blue tick' you can only comment if she follows you?...

Something like that. She's turned Twitter into an echo chamber where negative comments are easily ignored.
The quote tweets often tell a different story to the comments on her posts, but she dismisses those people as trolls.

category12 · 12/11/2022 10:31

It was funny though, she never could resist reading the quote tweets and kicking off if she didn't like them.

She seems to want only positive, fawning responses, can't bear any questions. But however much you try to control your audience, you can't on the internet.

Did anyone see the Vienetta supermarket fridge incident, where she posted a photo pretending she'd found the last mint one, and there was clearly some others just in shot. She deleted that fast. It was just very very silly.

I guess when you're a "content creator", you're digging around for something that will have easy popularity to post, you might make up some stupid shit for likes.

I guess the dog wrestling is one of those.

But you can't expect to get nothing but adulation back, that's the thing. With the dog, some people are going to think "don't like dogs on furniture" or "is that good for dog's training?" and all that.

category12 · 12/11/2022 11:17

I suppose the argument is, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all": you don't have to reply what you're thinking about the stupid shit the content creator is posting.

But what they're doing is selling themselves as a product, their illusion of "friendship", of being able to interact with them, so I think they should be accountable.

I think it's harmful to the audience and to the creator in a number of ways to have a culture of shut up or swoon, because you end up with

  • That utter disrespect that the creator can put any old shit out in front of the audience and get away with it, (which leads to stuff like Jack not even bothering to fulfill her patreon reward scheme for years and acting like everyone is in the wrong for bringing it up)
  • and the idea that we shouldn't question anyone, even if what they're saying or doing is clearly bollocks or even harmful, in case they get upset. Which is a way to create a lot of narcs, I reckon.
JackTorrance · 12/11/2022 13:20

The dog wrestling one was just cringe.
Oops. Forgot to be kind there.

category12 · 12/11/2022 13:52

Yeah, it belongs on a family WhatsApp at most.

Although I expect her mum would say "that's why you can't keep your bloody dog off my sofas when you come round." 😂

Is that what the Great Viennetta Furore has been about? I'd seen a few comments, but I don't follow her (believe it or not) because she gets on my t*ts. However I couldn't help but notice lately that the tide seems to have changed towards her - lots of comments and criticisms. I think Awfully Molly has exposed the bits that JM would rather were hidden, and people are starting to think a bit more.

I have no sympathy for her because she has none for other people. I've been reading the Slopalong site. People are making up her recipes (following her instructions) and costing them out. One the whole they aren't cheap, they aren't tasty and the nutritional value is very poor indeed. They are also often fuel heavy, and this isn't added into the costing. This wouldn't matter if her target audience was people who can afford to waste food - but it isn't. These are the poorest in our society that she is targeting, and they are vulnerable.

But you can't expect to get nothing but adulation back, that's the thing. With the dog, some people are going to think "don't like dogs on furniture" or "is that good for dog's training?" and all that.

I thought "That dog does not want to be rolling about with her. Leave the poor thing alone FFS!" Dogs are just like us. Sometimes they can be bothered, and sometimes they can't, and that one couldn't.

FKATondelayo · 12/11/2022 15:34

Does anyone remember the film Julie & Julia with Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.
A 00s New Yorker spends a year making Julia Child's recipes (lavish 1950s French food as understood by the upper middle class wife of a US diplomat) in her tiny Brooklyn kitchen?

I'm thinking about writing a screenplay Jack & Jackie. Jackie is a dinner lady who spends a year trying to make a salvageable meal from any one of JM's seven recipe books.

It's a horror.

Emotionalsupportviper · 12/11/2022 18:16

I do remember it - hasn't the woman who was making all of the recipes died recently? Or have I imagined that?

Lots of people think that "The Story of J" should be a Netflix series (Adults only with a (food) obscenity warning), so I think your film should have no trouble getting snapped up by one of the major film companies.

Can I have an invitation to the premier? I have a nice frock, so I wouldn't show you up very much.

Reminder to be kind

But why? Why should we be ‘kind’ to someone who manipulates people for cash? Is she being ‘kind’ by pretending to be poor so that people will give her money, which she then spends on Mulberry bags, Vivienne Westwood dresses and Cotswold furniture? Was she being ‘kind’ when she told a learning disabled follower who lives in a care home to ‘go outside and touch the grass’? Does being ‘kind’ mean you can’t call people out for behaving appallingly?
It seems to me that ‘be kind’ just means ‘shut up
and stop challenging people’. No thanks.

Shorter list might be what does she not lie about

This is really damning. People were and still are scammed

What does she lie about?

Where should we start? Her entire back story is full of lies and inconsistencies.

OtterOnToast · 12/11/2022 18:41

@ilyx LOL at 'what does she lie about?'

It would be more pertinent to ask 'what doesn't she lie about?'

This woman couldn't bloody lie straight in bed.

I didn’t know much about her I’ve just seen a couple of interviews where she seemed fairly nice/normal. I’ll have to look into it.

category12 · 12/11/2022 19:04

Pretty much the more you find out about she says about herself, the less it adds up or makes sense.

ilyx · 12/11/2022 19:09

Yikes. I remember an interview with James O’Brien where she said she was so advanced and clever for her age she got in trouble for it and the teacher told her Mum she needed to dumb herself down. Bet that was a lie! 😩

00100001 · 12/11/2022 19:19

I remember her COVID strop getting her a place in a TV show. And was asked a question about something like "what could you swap this expensive item for?" And her being unable to answer the question.

Like "so, if the viewer wanted to swap this organic spaghetti made in a little house in Italy by a Nonna who specialises in making spaghetti exactly 3mm wide. And costs £68 per strand... for a cheaper option, what could they use"
Jack " err ermmm err well I like blue best and me me me me"
mate, they were just looking for you to say "any pasta will do"

@Emotionalsupportviper yes, probably something to do with her just having covid. She wasn’t very old.

They also asked her why mince had different fat contents and she said ‘it just does’. Knowledgable cook there.

Her food is awful. Really awful. I don’t think she cares either. She’s one of those people who just thinks they should be famous and adored. No one mentions her ‘campaigning’ which literally does not exist! If she was actually famous this would have come out long ago but most people don’t know who she is anyway.

Emotionalsupportviper · 12/11/2022 20:42

Her food IS awful!

And she has NO IDEA of appropriate substitutions - I think she just thinks of sees random ingredients and thinks "What can I do with these?" And then starts rinsing beans.

OtterOnToast · 12/11/2022 20:52

I once saw her food described as joyless. I'd agree with that

I read she struggled in her grammar school and left with insufficient GCSE's to do her A-Levels
