Jack Monroe off Twitter

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

I made some biscuits, I think she tweeted about her recipe or something and I gave it a go. They turned out not very biscuity and didn't really taste of much.

I ate them of course.

Like her mum's potatoes, i'd eat them, but I wouldn't particularly enjoy them. 😂

chisum · 08/11/2022 09:39

I've tried a couple of her recipes. They don't seem to be based on any kind of cooking sense. I'd call them concoctions.

WaddleAway · 08/11/2022 10:40

Her recipes are blatantly untested, just reading them you can see that majority won’t work. She has no idea how cooking works. The sad thing is, the people she’s claiming to aim her books at can’t afford to waste money on shit recipes that don’t work.

Applesandcarrots · 08/11/2022 11:46

I don't think anyone who knows basics of cooking would happily eat half her recipes tbh.

I am well versed in "what the house gives" eintopf type of cooking and even that improv seems to have more logic than some of the recipes.

chillinean · 08/11/2022 12:58

I'm going to recycle my copy of Girl Called Jack recipe book. I won't be passing it on even to a charity shop. To be fair I think the recipes'work' in that they form mostly edible dishes, but if that's what you're facing out of need and you're on a budget then it's miserable, tasteless offerings.

I like the sound of the Jamie Oliver budget recipes, but to be honest I haven't looked properly yet.

chillinean · 08/11/2022 13:00

And I can see how people believe it all even with the glaring inconsistencies. I know I did and I feel foolish now.

frogface69 · 08/11/2022 13:30

Google Slopalong cooking with Jack Monroe. I found this thread yesterday. Some brave people are attempting to cook her recipes. It's very funny and shows exactly how they never work and how small the portions are.

PMSL! 😂

Thank you for this link, Froggy

I was about to mention the slopalong thread too. As bad as all the inconsistencies and lack of transparency about donations is, the results of her recipes upset me most.

7 cookbooks full of untested recipes, that in practice turn out to be barely edible. And all aimed at the people who can least afford to experiment or waste food.

I may not be a huge fan of any of the celebrities who publish cookbooks, but I do feel relatively confident that if I pick up a recipe from Jaime Oliver or Gordon Ramsey, it will make something I can eat.

The slopathon might be the funniest thing I’ll ever read. @frogface69 and @WhoWants2Know thank you from the bottom of my dear heart x

WaddleAway · 08/11/2022 20:19

You’ll be pleased to know there’s a part 2 of the thread, called ‘you can’t polish a turd, but you can cover it in parsley’. Enjoy!

Agreed.

She just seems to throw random ingredients into a pan, write a self-aggrandising, whiney paragraph of purple prose to accompany it, take a crap photograph and that's it.

I doubt she's ever eaten any of her own food - and her costings are as random as her ingredient combinations.

I rather liked this quote from one poster.

eggs now hard boiled I pour the water away (this could also be saved. You could freeze it, defrost, reheat at a later date and use it for hot hot scrubby flannel face washes), before splashing a little cold water on them so that they’re easier to handle.

What the heck did you pst there @Emotionalsupportviper 😂
Ehat did i miss

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/11/2022 21:06

It was a link to the slopalong thread, where a poster had followed one of Jack's recipes, adding photographs of each stage, and commenting on her progress.

It was effectively cut up hard-boiled eggs and a cup of tea, so I'm not sure what was inappropriate about it.

Her descriptions were hilarious (one is posted above).

All I can think is that there was somehow a glitch in the link.

category12 · 08/11/2022 21:07

I don't think MNHQ allow links to that place.

chillinean · 08/11/2022 21:07

I'm guessing it was just another quote!

I noticed it had gone earlier. Very quickly reported and hidden anyway 🤔.

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/11/2022 21:07

Oh - thanks @category - I didn't realise.

WaddleAway · 08/11/2022 21:11

Apparently they don’t allow links to MN either!

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/11/2022 21:12

I can only apologise to MN - I was unaware that it wasn't allowed.

😂😆

I wonder why.

I do remember in the dim and distant past of another now defunct parenting website I was on, members used to conduct "raids" on rival sites. I wonder if it's something like that, to try to avoid trolling wars?

And is it just that site or other messageboards?

<Speculates weakly>

category12 · 08/11/2022 21:19

Actually now I come to think about it, it might have been Mumsnet my past messageboard used to raid.

I guess Mumsnet won. 👑To the victor the spoils!

Which are apparently me.

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/11/2022 21:23

You are obviously worth fighting for @category12 .

A modern day Helen of Troy. 😁
