Jack Monroe off Twitter

1000 replies

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

Where was her son when she was sleeping rough? Was this before he was born?

Emotionalsupportviper · 25/10/2022 11:00

I'm surprised that her parents, who had fostered many other children over decades, couldn't be asked to look after their own grandson so that she could continue to work.

The kids dad moved in with JM to look after him for several months.
That's not the actions of a bad dad that wouldn't have tried to have his kid when she worked odd hours.

Everything JM does is by choice.

I mean the time line is shockingly confusing, she didn't do well at school, apparently, but got a 27j a year job at the fireservice (thanks to dad no doubt) she quit that job, but ended up writing for the Southend Echo at some point... Typical of a working class kid that didn't do well at school, fireservice job and then writing for a paper..
She makes it all up, no doubt theres a kernel of truth in there, but she pads it all out with self aggrandizing lies.

I like especially on twitter. Everything that gets recommended to her, she's done it, been there, seen it, done that, tried it, failed at it etc. I've known people like that in real life. Billy Bullshitters.

Ostryga · 25/10/2022 12:38

Jack has done everything someone in poverty has done, but had it 50 times worse and for far longer.

If she has ever spent a night ‘rough’ I’ll eat my shoes.

I honestly think she had a rough couple of weeks between pay checks 10 years ago and decided to make it her life story.

category12 · 25/10/2022 12:58

You have to eat your shoes because she did the sleep easy raising awareness charity thing in 2013.

Have some rinsed spaghetti hoops with them 😂😉

But I think that's the sum of her experience of sleeping rough.

Emotionalsupportviper · 25/10/2022 08:15

*hope

I do hop a lot though - all of those calories fill me with excess energy that I have to get rid of somehow.

I laughed so hard the entire office stopped and looked at me 😭🤣🤣🤣

Gingerkittykat · 25/10/2022 15:32

I've got a feeling Jack didn't actually say to the American newspaper she was sleeping rough and they took her words about sofa surfing/ moving all the time and said that themselves.

It's true though that her poverty story changes i.e. taking food out of bins and sex work was never mentioned in 2012 but was mentioned years later as the story became more elaborate to get more attention.

category12 · 26/10/2022 11:55

She's claimed that journalists have led her into saying things she didn't mean before, such as
"I've not been brought up on benefits and a tracksuit watching Jeremy Kyle. I'm a middle class, well educated young woman who fell a bit by the way side. You think it doesn't happen to normal people, and you think we are all scumbags, eating burgers and watching day time TV. It can happen to anyone."
which she in fact said in a speech to government.

So, her opinion/memories of things seems somewhat flexible.

category12 · 30/10/2022 12:51

Quite grim that she tweeted about her son having therapy. It's not like she and he are anonymous. He has to go to school.

Deflection tactics.

Same as all the vienetta bullshit, trying to drown out questions and affect the twitter algorithm. It's a regular thing she does.

Another book by the "working class single mum who was expelled from school and would never amount to anything", I see . . .

I wonder who what she's rinsing this time?

Applesandcarrots · 01/11/2022 23:31

Have you seen the shit show with "apologies"?
Everyone thought it's because of investigation or smth.

Nope. New book

People with money who want to oretend to be poor based on the price of the book

WaddleAway · 02/11/2022 07:25

She didn’t even leave 24 hours between ‘apologising’ for her monumental fuck ups and promoting her book. Honestly she makes me sick.

Or the "expelled from school and told never amount to anything?" Can she even keep track herself?!

Just noticed there's been a lot of critical activity over the past few days.

twitter.com/search?q=jack%20monroe&src=typeahead_click&f=top

People are finally seeming to wise up. Awfully Molly has opened a lot of eyes.

Applesandcarrots · 02/11/2022 20:54

Yup. And nothing is turning it back. Even her fans just went majorily quiet.
How is this still covered nowhere serious and how is someone with these piblic issues getting gigs is beyond me

category12 · 02/11/2022 21:30

With the Teemill issue, she's said that £11k was donated to the Trussell Trust (which they confirmed back along).

After that, she's said repeatedly that money raised after that was going to smaller charities as suggested by her followers.

She makes a massive massive stinking deal in her blogpost here about how difficult it was to work out "Oh boy, the headache that that caused in the end, and the maths, and the report reconciliations and checking and rechecking my homework…" yet in the end has told us that only a further £286.86 was raised, and she donated it all to a local (to her) foodbank (a charity, in the singular).

  1. What's hard about working out that any money left should go to the Vineyard? Teemill would take their cut before it got to her, and she said all profits to charity, so...?
  2. It's a remarkable drop in sales.
  3. Why hasn't she shown the dates of the transactions?
  4. Why did she involve her followers if she was just going to give the money to her local foodbank?
  5. Isn't it politic that she starts apologising to her Patreon people and offering up clarifications the day before she starts promoting her new book?

PS. I remain pissed off about her claims to being working class when she did that speech about being middle class.

TheLateLadyLothbrook · 03/11/2022 10:09

I'm so fed up of Jack and her poverty narrative. She hasn't the foggiest idea what it is to be raised in poverty. Her 'woe is me' posts are eye-rolling to those who have had to chow down dog biscuits to get something inside them. And her blatant lies about sex work are so offensive to Mothers who have genuinely had no choice. She absolutely sickens me. People who want to 'do good' don't ask for donations to the back burner. She's the worse tip jar rattler I've ever come across.

Weezol · 03/11/2022 15:24

How can people still be falling for her performative poverty?

I can only assume her supporters have been nowhere near poverty themselves (not counting their trip to India in their gap yah).

No, there's definitely poorer people supporting her.

She had to refund some money as it turned out a lady had given her money form her winter fuel allowance. Jack was pestered by the public to return the donation (and she did, on fairness) but I doubt she would have done if the information hadn't been public knowledge. The woman emailed Jack about it all and was ignored....

Annierosetexas · 03/11/2022 18:12

I am always astonished by the gullibility and naïveté of her followers when I look at her feed and wonder how anyone can fail to see she is a delusional grifter.

Yes, to all of this. But you know, I really struggle to believe her follower numbers. I can remember a relatively sudden 100,000 or so increase and her engagement levels are not that high. If all the bot accounts and inactive accounts were nuked, I wonder what number would be left.

I'm also in complete disbelief that £11,000+ profit came from Teemill sales in the blink of an eye. I'd be shocked if it was even £11,000 turnover to be honest. What a shame people didn't just donate directly to foodbanks and save all the hoo haa. Although of course, you wouldn't get some throw away product printed with a campaigner's name and you'd deprive said campaigner from donating your money in their own name, or maybe that should read 'your and their money'?

Personally I donate physical goods, food, period and hygiene products and towards Christmas, toys and give them to local volunteer led organisations. It doesn't bring any kind of public comments club approval, but it just seems like the most effective way to help out a bit and surely that's the kind of path that campaigners should promote rather than promoting their own public profile?

'I am always astonished by the gullibility and naïveté of her followers when I look at her feed and wonder how anyone can fail to see she is a delusional grifter.'

@Annierosetexas
I'm the same, but there seems to be a hard core who won't hear a word even questioning, let alone, against her. I've seen some of their absolute thuggery and online bullying of anyone who dares to comment with anything but fulsome praise. It's like a cult, it can be absolutely vicious and she does nothing to moderate that, actually, she seems to revel in it.

Worst of all, in my opinion, she can't even cook and can't write up effective recipes; she really doesn't have any idea, no food knowledge, no clue about nutritional values, no taste buds and questionable food storage/safety standards. I'm stunned that she gets book, brand colab, speaking and TV deals. I can only assume they're off the back of previous well known media fiancées - a while ago, a thread like this would've been zapped straight away, so something's changed big time.

I'm absolutely baffled, find it very hard to believe anything she says and can't see her moments in the sun lasting much longer.

WaddleAway · 04/11/2022 21:24

Her engagement is really poor. She also gets far more likes on her random personal posts about boring shit like viennetta than she does on her ‘professional’ posts. And that’s because no one really takes her seriously as a cook (or a ‘campaigner’).
I have absolutely no respect for her supporters. They’re enabling her grift.

teawamutu · 08/11/2022 08:38

At the start of the pandemic I bought a couple of her books - partly because I fell for the poor-meeing 🙄and partly because so many shop shelves were empty and I thought some store cupboard inspiration would be useful.

I love cooking, but not one of her recipes produced anything decent. With considerable tweaking - usually double the quantities, quadruple the flavourings and add something else, like garlic or chilli - a couple of the ideas have evolved into regulars. But the originals were miniscule, bland and tasteless. I concluded she didn't really like food much.
