Jack Monroe off Twitter

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

Funnily enough I thought of her today when walking past the food donation trolley in my local supermarket.

It was empty apart from a 4 pk of Spaghetti Hoops and I thought to myself "oh Jack will have to rinse them."

Actually, it was the 'rinsing spaghetti hoops' that finally finished me off.

No. You don't need to do that to pasta that's already 70s retro soggy but would be a comforting meal served on toast.

You can just cook small pasta shapes in a mug,by pouring a kettle over them & letting them steep.

JM has pointed this out herself in a 'recipe'.

It's just one big, circular grift at this point.

She had an ok veggie burger recipe but even then...I'm sorry, my student flat routinely made 'veggie burgers' 30 years ago out of the contents of the fridge, fed through the shared house's resident posh kid's food processor & then fried up with...well, some gruesome concoctions.

But I'd never have needed JM to tell me that I could make a veggie burger from carrots & kidney beans. Obviously I could do that.

Her audience was never going to be actual skint people; it's primarily nostalgic middle class types like me who have fond memories of eating, as a student, weird shit mushed up together from bad shopping decisions.

A friend was there at the last award she won, guardian whatever. Applause within the venue was very muted

Hated by established Restauranteurs

Quitelikeit · 19/10/2022 21:06

her lawyer is free/pro bono according to a tweet she put out. It’s on Awfully Mollys Twitter feed.

not sure if she is suing Molly as not clear by the feed

category12 · 19/10/2022 21:13

The way I read it, I think Molly's just commenting on flying monkeys telling her they look forward to seeing her sued into oblivion in her dms?

Yup.
They keep repeating that to everyone who disagrees🙄

ChocChipOwl · 19/10/2022 21:20

On what grounds could she sue AM? On the grounds of her actual own words?!

Search me.

I think if AM was going to get sued, she'd know about it by now.

ChocChipOwl · 19/10/2022 21:53

@category12 I mean, I'm lolling just thinking about the evidence being presented. Can you imagine?

The whole AM thing was screenshots. From Jack. Her actual tweets and interviews and words.

Be kind = let people get away with scamming others, does it?

Doesn't need to personally harm or insult me to be worth criticism.

I consider her messages harmful - eg a family of 3 can live generously on less than £20 food budget.
I consider it insulting that she gave a speech intended to celebrate working class women writers, when she has said she is middle class and has spoken of working class people in disparaging terms.
I consider her unkind when she instigates pile-ons on smaller accounts, such as the one belonging to a disabled chap in a care home.

She has harmed people.

She's told the Tory government that you can feed a family on £20 a week, she's told them that several times.
The Tory government set Unemployment at £334 A MONTH to buy food, electric, gas, water, insurance, council tax..

And further, she's telling the Tories that people can live in the awful recipes in her books that are neither nutrionally balanced or calorific enough to be classed as a Meal.

She needs to shut up, stop peddling lies that harm people and that make awful horrendous bastards believe the poor don't need much cash to live.

She is a poverty cosplayer that harms actual people in poverty. She is neither nice, intelligent or kind and will launch her flying morons on anyone that dissents. so, with all due respect, #BeKind can go to hell.

Applesandcarrots · 19/10/2022 22:22

And forgot the caveat that you can only do that of you have £££ stock already

She always leaves those details out. It's misleading at best, lying through her teeth at worst.

You can not in this day and age feed a family on £20 to the point they get all the nutrients and calories they need... The only way I can see you could get close is bulk buying and bulk cooking which needs electric / gas, storage space and time to learn and do it.

SteakExpectations · 19/10/2022 22:47

Just to point out that not only can you literally not buy enough food for 7 breakfasts, lunches and dinners for £20 for one person, never mind a family of any size, the actual recipes that Jack recommends on this sort of budget have woefully inadequate calories, and many people have raised concerns about Jack’s recipes encouraging ED.

I went through a phase a few years ago of following the JM thread on Tattle and this is pretty much just history repeating itself. It’s a cycle of Jack getting a well paid gig, pretending to be skint, posts on Twitter that cause outrage from the general public, being called out for her BS, flying monkey pile on, flounce, a few days off Twitter, setting Twitter to replies from followers only, then posts promoting a well paid gig and the cycle begins again…

ChocChipOwl · 19/10/2022 23:12

@LikeTearsInRain oh give over. That stupid 'be kind' schtick! Should we 'be kind' to someone who is a literal con artist? Conning people and it's all in plain sight? You're happy with that are you?

What about being kind to the people she's ripped off?

And nobody is being hateful.

People never tell men to be kind.

Just women

category12 · 20/10/2022 07:11

It's funny that those people who do defend Jack tend to stick with "shut up because it's not nice", rather than defending what she says or does.

Againstmachine · 20/10/2022 07:40

*People never tell men to be kind.

Absolute rubbish, I have seen it used towards men.

If you are follow celebs you will see it more, as more women are invested in this than men.

bakehimawaytoys · 20/10/2022 08:10

I used to stick up for Jack Monroe as I admired her early work but these days "poverty cosplaying" (as a PP put it) sums it up really. She's had bestselling cook books, a major supermarket ad campaign and multiple other TV appearances, and that's just the ones I'm vaguely aware of, yet we're still expected to believe she's on the breadline and in need of donations? Nah. She's a grifter.

WaddleAway · 20/10/2022 08:50

Someone should have told Jack Monroe to ‘be kind’ when she was tweeting abuse at a disabled man in a care home not too long ago, and telling him to go outside and ‘touch the grass’.

hagridsbeard33 · 20/10/2022 10:01

She's an odd character. Very bolshy and outspoken online yet her presenting skills are so meek and mild. She always looks like a rabbit in the headlights. The two personalities don't seem to match up at all.

I was the very same and was convinced, even recently, that she does some good (is it possible she does?). I was also baffled to hear that she was still apparently in poverty. I thought that was behind her and she was now campaigning to help others out of poverty, like her. Not so.

It's all so unnecessary. I can understand why people are so angry about inconsistencies and donations.

category12 · 20/10/2022 13:09

I don't know - she was credited with a change by the ONS, but it seems like it was being done anyway and she just spoke at an opportune time?

She is the creator of the Vimes Boots Index, but it doesn't seem like it's been produced yet. And she was asking for people's old shopping receipts, which I cannot see how would produce usable, useful information for an economic project of any scale - (particularly when supermarkets etc collect our info all the time and other bodies do too). But I guess we'll see. I await my humble pie.

She is credited with bringing back Asda's lowest price range of goods as well? Not to be too miserable about her, but her twitter has looked like an advert for Asda when she did the £20 shop thing fairly recently.

Which is another thing - to one set of people, she's showing us how to make our money stretch and helping - to another set of people, she's playing into the narrative that low income families simply can't look after their money and can't cook.
