Jack Monroe off Twitter

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

What is up with her followers? I made one little comment to her about her recipes, that they were more style than substance, and suddenly I had hordes of agitated people on my case! They were worse than TRAs!

They’re often the same people

Againstmachine · 14/10/2022 22:58

She is threatening legal action again. I'm not sure if it's against awfully molly but if so I'm not sure how she can call libel when it's all her own contradictory words on display 🙈

She was threatening to sue a MP at one point but nothing happened, I'd love to see the awfully molly one as in a libel case burden of proof is on jack not molly.

InCheesusWeTrust · 14/10/2022 23:00

That MP lawsuit made rounds again with interesting timing

Againstmachine · 14/10/2022 23:03

If it is the mp he has loads more ammunition about her.

I can't keep up with her.
She wanted to sue because one said she makes money off people worse off than her.

Easily proven. Her books are aimed at budget cooking, her audience is those without much money, she profits. She has 570k followers, if even 10% gave her £5 a year, that's a lot of money. Patreon, 700 supporters giving £3, lots of money.

She has no case.

She also threatened someone who said that she likely gets more than the PM.
Again, easy enough to draw that conclusion. Books, TV appearances, followers giving to PayPal, patreon etc. The PM isn't paid al that much in comparison. The PM gets 80k or so for being pm on top of another 80k or so for MP wage. 160k is less than if 50% of her followers gave her £1 a year. A reasonably held opinion is that she makes more than the PM a year.
You'd be a fool for believing she's still as poor as she claims.

What was the MP drama? I can barely keep up to speed

InCheesusWeTrust · 15/10/2022 14:34

He said what appears to be the truth🙈

I believe she crowdfunded money for that lawsuit...

From the Guardian article:

At the start of the clip, Daubney refers to Monroe as the “self-appointed representative of the impoverished”, adding she has “sold loads of books. Done quite well out of it. No doubt, probably earns more than the prime minister”.
Anderson responds by stating: “She’s taking money off some of the most vulnerable people in society and making an absolute fortune on [sic] the back of people.”

I'm not sure she really has a case - Daubney said probably, people have tweeted and probably commented on her blog etc that they don't have much but they'll donate to her and the like.

And she retweeted the clip herself, didn't she? So it's not like she was horrified and scared of reputational damage and asking them to take it down & apologise - she was publicising it. I'm not sure how that would play in a libel case.

MrsMorton · 15/10/2022 15:13

"Truth is an absolute defense to libel claims, because one of the elements that must be proven in a defamation suit is falsity of the statement."

I will be fascinated to see arch how this goes.

She retweeted it multiple times, and gleefully counted the views, while tweeting things like ‘maybe I’ll get my dream house after all’. Certainly not the actions of someone worried about suffering damage to their reputation. I work in this area and no judge would look kindly on that sort of behaviour.
It’s worth noting too that her online behaviour was heavily criticised by the judge in her case against Katie Hopkins.

She tweeted not long ago that she had plenty of time to file a case. Went on to hope Daubney etc were shitting themselves for another 240 days.
I forget the exact wording, but it's not exactly proving any damage to her reputation when she's gloating gleefully.

While she's (mostly) off Twitter, she seems to be doing alright in mainstream media - won an award as "food hero" 😬www.theguardian.com/food/2022/oct/16/i-tweeted-and-life-went-nuts-ofm-awards-2022-food-hero-jack-monroe

CatJumperTwat · 16/10/2022 23:25

I do think the tide is starting to turn. Since that Awfully Molly (?) thread on Twitter, people have finally started criticising her openly. I think her days of relevance are numbered.

LicoricePizza · 17/10/2022 01:24

I get all the opinions on her - but seems to me at the end of the day she’s just another internet person selling another product. It could only fans or influencing, or whatever. Her brand is poverty & she’s monetised it.
All of the above involved exploitation of others & self. All for popularity & money. Yes she’s exploiting people willing to buy into her shtick. But they don’t have to. If not her going it it will only be someone else.

A Guardian columnist, with a book coming out in a few months, winning an award at a guardian owned paper..

PinkNews will be next where she'll win campaigner of the year or some such where she's up against real actual.campaigners.. but.. JM has friends in places and contacts made through Allegra and Other exes.

Sometimes it's who you know rather than what you do.

The difference with her is that she's taken money meant for charity and been very opaque with where it's gone. And wins awards for being a 'food hero' when she's nothing of the sort.

It's the dishonesty enabled by the mainstream media that gets me

category12 · 17/10/2022 08:22

Yes, it's like once you get your foot in the door, they would rather use you and rely on name recognition than actually finding an expert or genuine activist. Lazy.

"New economist" Jack Monroe ?! On what basis? Such self-aggrandising bull.

And I doubt anyone is claiming she has a mansion and millions, just that she's doing rather nicely out of it all, meaning the boiling soap and removing lightbulbs blog a couple of months ago was exploitative claptrap.

I'm not sure she would have a case based on the information in your post either. The PM earns, what, £200k pa? (guessing). So I've definitely seen Jack Monroe on telly and I've seen her in adverts and political party broadcasts, I've seen her books advertised to me on social media. I don't know how much all of that would pay and I would imagine it's probably quite 'feast and famine', but Daubney could easily defend his 'probably' speculation as a 'reasonably held belief', but it could be reasonably held that someone with those sorts of media jobs wouldearn at or around £200k at least some years.

InCheesusWeTrust · 17/10/2022 14:46

I believe pm gets 80k + 80k for still being an mp as well.

If 30% of jack's twitter followers gave her £1 a year, that's more than £160k.
Bearing in mind she has shared her personal PayPal several times and links to it on her blog etc.
Not much of a stretch to believe the flying ButtMonkies chuck her cash too.

InCheesusWeTrust · 17/10/2022 17:17

And no taxes....

ChocChipOwl · 17/10/2022 20:29

I've just read that article. The police have advised her to hire a bodyguard for public appearances, she says

No they haven't. They categorically have not. Don't ask me how I know this for sure as I can't say but .... this is just not true

PinkPalaceinthesky · 17/10/2022 23:51

Funnily enough I thought of her today when walking past the food donation trolley in my local supermarket.

It was empty apart from a 4 pk of Spaghetti Hoops and I thought to myself "oh Jack will have to rinse them."

AnonWeeMouse · 19/10/2022 18:57

It's the night of the Pink News awards.
Monroe is nominated, by someone she knows.
Take a look at who she is up against, and when she wins, it'll be very obvious it's nepotism at play.

Oh she’ll win, and it’s an absolute disgrace. She’s up against genuine campaigners and activists. She posts a few shouty tweets every now and then.
