Jack Monroe off Twitter

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

I don't think ONS ever credited her. Afaik she credited herself and someone did FOI recently....

I meant the papers/social media.

But yeah, badly worded by me - "a change by the ONS was credited to her by press/SM" is what I should have said 😀

There's been a couple of FOIs to ONS.
Both said the same.

They meet regularly with many people. In Jack's case, they had 1 informal meeting that wasnt even minuted and, reading between the lines, it was a group thing with several ONS staff there.

I just remembered a book called How To Feed Your Family on £5 a Day which my mum had in the late 80s / early 90s when we were kids. Some of the recipes were really good. I just looked her up - the author is Bernardine Lawrence and she is still on Twitter under @ HowToFeedFamily

So thirty years ago £35 a week was considered a tight budget for feeding a family - and yet here Jack is telling Tories that £20 is perfectly reasonable in 2022.

If you read her original stuff from 2012 when she first came to public attention she claims she was gaunt, starving and had jutting out collarbones from lack of food.

Next she was writing recipes for £10 a week and claiming she was well fed on them.

Now in 2022 she can apparently feed three people for £20 a week despite all of the price rises in 10 years.

It just doesn't add up.

Hmm so she's skint, but reading the replies to the dog lady on Insta it would appear she regularly visits a cafe with her dog (who gets groomed regularly).

Definite grifter.

She just needs to stop telling the world everything. We don't need to know what she eats, where she eats, how much she spends in Asda. She's her own worst enemy really.

I would go further - she needs to stop lying about what and where she eats, what her income is and where she lives.
She's not poor, she's 'poor little me'.

She digs herself into these holes by over sharing, and yes that's an autistic trait but you can put checks and balances in place to prevent that from happening so much.

The issue is that her entire livelihood comes from her being active online, so she's just shooting herself in the ass every day.

And further, she's telling the Tories that people can live in the awful recipes in her books that are neither nutrionally balanced or calorific enough to be classed as a Meal.

They are really grim - I tried some when we were on our beam ends and they are

a) awful. and

b) tiny, tiny portions which leave you hungrier than when you started.

I wonder - Does anyone ever actually TEST her recipes before publishing them? I find it hard to believe she would even eat them herself.

I abandoned them very quickly as they were inedible, and a waste of money. Plus - ingredients may involve eg 1/4 tsp X spice costed at a ha'penny, but you can't BUY 1/4 tsp X spice You have to buy a little jar/box for £1.80 etc. Unless you have a vast store of stuff to draw on, you can't make them

Bernadine Lawrence is MUCH better. So is Jamie Oliver's basic cookbook Ministry of Food. But neither of them pretend you can lavishly feed a family on 20 quid/week.

I agree. There's a danger pretending you can live on £20 a week even for only two people. Not just from a health point of view either. Absolute rubbish.

I name changed as I was talking about this earlier, but I bought that recipe book and I was almost brought to tears after reading the foreword. I feel angry now about the exaggerating and the inconsistencies.

The recipes though. The cake bread things don't come out well, and other recipes, like the peach and chickpea recipe, are tasteless and bland.

I still have my copy of the book (girl called Jack) but I think it's going into the recycling bin rather than charity?

And yes important point that it's doing the poor a great disservice to tell the Tories that they can live off £20 worth of food, nutritionally and healthily. Two people too. They simply can't.

There used ti be a poster on here years ago that used to post meal plans and a link to her home ec type stuff. I can't remember well enough. I think she was reasonably well off but did it to help people - at the time I had small (cheap) kids but I'd love to find her information now.

My brain is like a seive so I can't even remember her name!
