To think Starmer is starting to show some original ideas?

He pledges to set up a publicly-owned green energy company within a year if he is elected, with 100% clean power by 2030

Sounds enterprising and different to the bog standard ‘we’re going to nationalise everything’. There’s agency with it being green energy and good for the environment. Sounds more like responsible nationalisation…

“He says the war in Ukraine was the spark that caused rising energy costs, but that the country was not in a position to deal with it.”

And that’s insightful. Sounds like he’s thought something through.

Being reported Live from Labour conference: www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-politics-63042145

P.S. I’m a centric voter who swings and sways depending on what’s going on at the time and what’s on offer etc.
Right now, I do not like Truss’ government because she seems irresponsible (dodging the OBR report for the mini budget with semantics) and she just doesn’t care…
Labour as the obvious opposition but there are other options. This is the first time in a while I’ve seen Starmer present a fresh new idea…

I saw some of his speech today and thought it was good. Far rather him than the current lot.

emeraldcity2000 · 27/09/2022 15:51

Loved the speech today. Sounded like PM in waiting

RodiganReed · 27/09/2022 15:52

He's ready

Stripyhoglets1 · 27/09/2022 15:58

I've put yabu as they've been coming up with ideas for a while only they are not reported on. And the social media bots perpetuate the "no good ideas" rhetoric.

But yes this could be the last labour conference before a general election with any luck - so there will be a general setting out of their plans now.

There's the risk the tories will pinch the good plans but Truss is so far right that is unlikely tbh!

The Labour partys response and ideas are all there if you look for them!

CurseOfBigness · 27/09/2022 16:08

You can’t blame the public for not realising if the message has been intercepted by bots and a right wing press.

But maybe the bots and right wing press have actually done Labour a favour in claiming they have “no good ideas”. It means Starmer’s new ideas stand out more and can shine.

There’s a wow factor suddenly… the public like to be wowed lol!

Another one who thinks you're being unreasonable to think he's not had plenty of good ideas already, a few of them have even been pinched by the tories.

Opposition policy doesn't traditionally get much mention in the media, except during conference season. Unless you actually go out of your way to listen to his speeches, you'll not tend to hear much more than the soundbites.

There's also an element of not playing your hand too soon. Mention your big policies when you're still 4 years out from an election, and you risk them becoming a.) old news , b.) outdated, or c.) nicked by the government by the time the election rolls around.

Well after Truss’ disaster I think floating voters like me are paying more attention to the opposition.

Starmer’s good luck that Truss’ unpopularity coincides with the Labour conference.

His messages are coming through it seems.

I’m actually impressed by the publicly owned green energy company idea. Very good!

Hasn’t Truss practically ripped up environmental policy?

Environment and green energy is key to the future imo.

Let’s hope so. 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

girlmom21 · 27/09/2022 16:31

People voting YABU because he's had good ideas are causing a debate that's going to take away from the positive Labour outlook here - pretty counterproductive.

I must say as another pretty centrist voter it gives me a little bit of hope.

Starmer has acted on this swiftly.

Labour MP Rupa Huq suspended for calling Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng 'superficially' black

What happens to racism (and homophobia) within the Conservative party?

Boris Johnson called gay men 'tank-topped bumboys' and black people 'piccaninnies' with 'watermelon smiles'

Yeah but no but what about women? Still no recognition of 51% of the population.

I didn't actually bother voting originally so have just voted YANBU just for you.

I think it was a fantastic speech and like you, it made me feel hopeful about the future, which I didn't think was possible at the moment. I just find the narrative that Starmer hasn't had any ideas up till now very annoying, it makes him seem wishy washy when that's not the case.

If anyone is interested in hearing more from him, I found the interview he did about a month ago on the "The Rest is Politics" podcast very illuminating. He seemed a lot more relaxed than the standard political interview, and a lot more willing to talk and properly engage, not just repeat the same 5 soundbites over and over.

I don’t understand. That seems unlikely and needs probing. Explain... how?

Men get paid more than women. In some cases men get paid more than women for doing the same job. That inequality is awful.

Conservative’s most recent mini-budget disproportionately helps men. Men are more likely to be over the £150k tax threshold than women.

Labour sound like they’re going to help level out the economy playing field… that’ll help women.

I didn't see this, but it that would get me listening. It's baffling that we are so reliant on such unstable countries for something as important as energy and no-ones done a damn thing about it.

I wonder whether there are rumblings of an early GE in Westminster? It's early in the game for the opposition to be showing their hand? Or is it to get people listening?

Labour cannot identify what a woman is and without the very basic terminology our sex based rights are meaningless. Go onto twitter and search #labourlosingwomen

I don't disagree with this, but at this stage of the game we are hurtling towards economic and climate disaster. We need to get Labour in. The Tories are worse on women's rights.

Just had a look and it was the episode from the 20th July, so a bit further back than I'd remembered.

It's a good podcast in general, hosted by Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell, so you get both Tory and Labour points of view, but both quite centerist.

It's mostly just the two of them talking about whats gone on this week, but when they do get a guest on, its quite a laid back interview style, so the politicians seem to open up a bit more than they do when they're facing someone like Andrew Neil

Is this about the Trans debate?

From what I understand, Trans rights have been enabled by the Conservatives who have been in power over the last 12 years, not Labour.

Self ID came under Theresa May, didn’t it?

Have the Conservatives identified what a woman is and given it a basic terminology?

From my viewpoint as a floating voter, it’s actually the Conservatives responsibility to define what a woman is and offer that basic terminology… because they’re the ones who have enabled the recent changes that impact women’s rights.

So is #labourlosingwomen a Trojan Horse excuse telling women to vote Conservatives instead of Labour?

He’s always had ideas

unfortunately the average person chooses not to listen, just regurgitates how bland he is, like they are making some super hot political take

Hmmph · 27/09/2022 17:06

I love the idea of Great Britain Energy. It is an excellent idea.

I am firmly GC, but would vote for Labour. Women are suffering and will continue suffering much more under this current Government than they will be by Labour's stance. I hope Labour change their minds then I can be very happy with my vote.

I am starting to get the feeling that some GC posters on MN are Conservative Trolls. They pop up on every thread that mentions that Labour is the favourite party at the moment and pipe up with "But they think TWAW...". They way it is done sometimes seems a little off and not like a genuine concern. And also, I don't think that Liz Truss can be trusted on any issue. She is NOT on our side.

I’m sorry to show my ignorance but what does GC stand for?

I think Conservative Trolls need to also understand that floating voters are so because they want to know the truth… then choose.

Forcing propaganda and lies at a floating voter is less likely to sway and more likely to be probed for honesty.
