To think Starmer is starting to show some original ideas?

He pledges to set up a publicly-owned green energy company within a year if he is elected, with 100% clean power by 2030

Sounds enterprising and different to the bog standard ‘we’re going to nationalise everything’. There’s agency with it being green energy and good for the environment. Sounds more like responsible nationalisation…

“He says the war in Ukraine was the spark that caused rising energy costs, but that the country was not in a position to deal with it.”

And that’s insightful. Sounds like he’s thought something through.

Being reported Live from Labour conference: www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-politics-63042145

P.S. I’m a centric voter who swings and sways depending on what’s going on at the time and what’s on offer etc.
Right now, I do not like Truss’ government because she seems irresponsible (dodging the OBR report for the mini budget with semantics) and she just doesn’t care…
Labour as the obvious opposition but there are other options. This is the first time in a while I’ve seen Starmer present a fresh new idea…

What I want to know is what Labour are going to do about it. What are they going to do to protect women and children and keep women’s spaces and refuges single sex. Labour knows there’s a problem, deal with it don’t minimise it. If it’s so insignificant in the whole of the political landscape it should be easy.

Tories will be in for the next 2 years, ask them how they intend to reduce the 500 women who will be murdered in a domestic setting over the next 24 months?

Maybe a tax cut will help?

Tories know what a woman is, so should be easy.

Its not a coalition govt, so what Labour say (and they ve said plenty on what they intend to do) is rather irrelevant until the next GE.

Fishandchipsupper · 28/09/2022 11:20

I am aware of what has happened to women’s rights and safety under the Tories, what are labour going to do about it. What policies have you got to police single sex spaces, the equality act, what are you going to do about the misogyny in the police force

Fishandchipsupper · 28/09/2022 12:07

What are Labours plans on recording data based on biological sex. How are they going to ensure statistics are reflecting sex based data.
how are labour going to work with Rosie Duffield and the gender critical women and gay men in the party
should be easy to include in any manifesto, a couple of paragraphs should be enough.

Then wait for the manifesto.

i think we need some info on the direction of travel now.

Fascist? You should really look up what the word means. It looks silly when you use it without knowing the meaning.

Probably should have used "quotes" and said fascist fellow-traveller from a country that had actual fascism and that we as a country actually had to fight against. She's careful enough now to dog-whistle and obfuscates but Italians know what fascism is they invented it as does she. Europe's in the foothills of that journey at the moment should the economic situation gets much worse the real thing will come out from behind the careful media-savvy mask they have constructed and things are going to get a lot messier and more violent.

Fishandchipsupper · 28/09/2022 13:00

you need to stop conflating feminism with fascism. Why aren’t socialists defending women’s rights. And we all now that the far right and the far left are both the same in their jackboot behaviour

In my opinion Starmer addressed more immediately important issues in yesterday's speech. The Tory government is responsible for issues relating to women's rights now and unless the real problems posed by poverty are addressed women will continue to be disadvantaged.

Fishandchipsupper · 28/09/2022 14:41

That’s brilliant, will you be basing policies on sex based data or men’s feelings?

"basing policies"? What on earth are you talking about? As far as I'm concerned my priority is that this government is removed, that the damage they've done is addressed and a reduction of the poverty experienced by so many including children and the vulnerable. Until those steps are in action self ID issues are way down my list of priorities.

Fishandchipsupper · 28/09/2022 15:39

And this is why labour is losing women, which is a massive feat given what a shit show the Tories are at the moment

jcyclops · 28/09/2022 15:42

Starmer wanting to set up a publicly owned green energy company is not an original idea, and given Labour's record in this field is probably not a good idea. Labour thought it would be easy to compete with British Gas, EDF et al, but it was a costly mistake. Just ask the taxpayers of Nottingham, Bristol, Warrington and others where labour councils set up energy companies pumping in taxpayers funds only to lose tens of millions in each case when Robin Hood Energy, Bristol Energy and Together Energy had to be sold or went bust. This time, Labour wants to do it on a national scale with billions of pounds. It won't end well.

Some women maybe. You don't know how many agree with you and how many feel as I do. I'm sure I'm not alone.

Totally different, they were billing companies, like the multitude of companies set up to provide us with choice, that now we have to ALL pay for with v high standing charges.

Starmer wants a state owned generating company.

Next!

Oh I wonder why this would end differently

SwordToFlamethrower · 28/09/2022 17:03

If labour gets in then we can kiss all women's rights goodbye. Bye bye children's safeguarding.

Being led by a man who says it's wrong to say only women have a cervix.

Urgh

Sausagenbacon · 28/09/2022 17:08

I listened to The Rest is Politics when KS was on. And tbh, they gave him an easy ride and he waffled. Rory Stewart asked him 3 times what his policies would be and, each time, he rambled on about talking to business.
I stopped listening to the podcast when AC referred to GC women as being like 'golf club bores' .
The idea of a national energy company is plain ridiculous. Is he planning on buying existing power stations, or building new ones (which takes decades).

Sausagenbacon · 28/09/2022 17:10

And I will never vote for a politician who thinks it's inappropriate to ask if women have a cervix.

walkingonsunshinekat · 28/09/2022 17:11

Tory CHQ out in force today.

MarshaBradyo · 28/09/2022 17:11

Unfortunately he is weak when interviewed - he was on R4 this morning

Looks like he’ll be in at next GE, hopefully everyone here that rates him is right and things will go well afterwards

Sausagenbacon · 28/09/2022 17:14

Is that your considered opinion walkingonsunshinekat. Posters disagree with you and they're part of CHQ.
I suppose it's easier than engaging with discussion.

Kissingfrogs25 · 28/09/2022 17:15

The conference was totally overshadowed by the disgusting display of racism and classism. It was utterly shocking.

The insinuation from the Labour MP that a black man can't possibly hope to become a successful, rich conservative of high status and therefore he is fake, clearly they have to always be stuck in poverty with Labour. Absolutely appalling.

I didn't think he came across as weak at all, not sure how you can tell that from a radio interview, he was a successful DPP & war crim prosecutor, i doubt a weak man could do that.

Do you prefer people who wreck the country, lie, are hypocritical because they come across "as strong"

I'm not a particular KS fan but perhaps we now need a Govt that is remotely competent & boring instead of what we've had since 2016.

I 'd also suggest you look up what Labour are proposing on a Green energy company, instead of listening to posters who think it means building power stations and comparing it to a supply company like Bulb - if your interested of course.
