Just when I'm starting to get on board with voting Labour, one of their MPs comes out with something like this.
Ms Huq was said to be sitting next to Labour chairwoman Anneliese Dodds when she made the remarks.
In the audio, Ms Huq could be heard saying: “Superficially he is a black man.
“He went to Eton, I think, he went to a very expensive prep school, all the way through, the top schools in the country.
“If you hear him on the Today programme, you wouldn’t know he is black.”

See you're a racist too @Lunar270 because you believe someone should hold particular views/ do particular things because of their race.

Kwasi Kwarteng is a very privileged man and has been very privileged his entire life. Why would you expect him to act any different to any other very privileged men just because he's black?

Rupa doesn't get a free pass to call him a coconut (which is basically what she did) because she's Asian.

Quirkyme · 28/09/2022 18:56

@Lunar270

You really said "are you black? If so, perhaps you can explain the nuances of the N word".

Don't ever ask someone who is black to explain to you the "nuances of the N word".

Ever.

Quirkyme · 28/09/2022 19:00

@Lunar270

You have been harping on and on about this word and it being used and you really really need to stop.

It's looking obsessive.

Like STOP.

pointythings · 28/09/2022 19:20

What Huq said was point blank indefensible. However, I do wish people would stop harping on about how wonderfully diverse the Tories are because they furnish us with female prime ministers and holders of high office from a range of backgrounds. Their gender or background means jack shit when their policies only benefit the wealthy and the privileged.

They are more diverse though. I don't agree with any of their policies but it is a simple fact that their front bench is more diverse than Labour's

pointythings · 28/09/2022 21:50

When diversity delivers policies that do not support diversity, is it really diversity? That was the point. We should be looking at policies, not anything else. Why does it matter that the parry with the policies that better support people from all backgrounds rather than the privileged few doesn't look right? I despair of the British obsession of style over substance.

Cam22 · 28/09/2022 21:54

She looks a bit scary. But she was wrong to say what she did. Foot in mouth time.
She can call Kwazy Kwarteng as many other names as she likes, though. He is a useless waste of space.

I agree with your general point about their policies but it is very stark how the party which is supposed to be about equality and raising people up is dominated by white men from Islington. It's just words not actions. Labour is basically a big bowl of PLU

You could argue that the other way round though couldnt you?

The party that shouts about diversity, doesnt actually deliver it within its own party, it doesnt enable (and I dont know why) a wider range of society to stand/work within it.

Alltheholidays · 28/09/2022 22:08

Not diverse at all. They are there because it looks good for the torys to say that have Asian and black people on the front bench!
No way a POC would ever be made leader of the party, and never PM.
The rank and file torys would never tolerate a black or brown face!

pointythings · 28/09/2022 22:10

Well, labour have not been in power for 12 years, so saying they haven't delivered diverse policies is a touch unreasonable. Meanwhile the oh so diverse Tories have delivered for their backers and for those who are already very well off. Do we really want to promote a party who tick boxes but do no more than that? You wouldn't employ a lesser candidate at interview because they ticked the diversity box. That box comes into play when you have two equally good candidates. We don't have that situation here.

Clymene · 28/09/2022 22:14

It's interesting how this thread is being diverted from talking about the racist labour mp to talking about Tory policies. Hmm

pointythings · 28/09/2022 22:21

One MP doesn't represent the entire party. I could equally complain about all the apologists for Tory racism. Bottom line, one Labour MP said something indefensible. I would like to see her stand down myself. But so many people are using one person's actions to smear the entire party that it's a bad joke. Both parties have rotten apples. Lately the Tories have lovingly nurtured theirs. Starmer has stamped on his. There's a contrast there.

Do you understand what you've just said? That the black and brown people in the Tories couldn't possibly be there under their own merit? Just as diversity hires?

That sounds pretty racist to me.

It's another example of people on the left thinking they can say anything racist/sexist/etc as they are politically and morally pure, therefore it's for a good reason. Have a think about that.

Gymrabbit · 28/09/2022 23:10

‘Alltheholidays

‘ They are there because it looks good for the torys to say that have Asian and black people on the front bench!’

found your racist right here!

to people like you it couldn’t possibly be because they are good at their jobs could it. Only because of their colour.

Gymrabbit · 28/09/2022 23:12

Sorry SantaCarlaCalifornia
x post.

Alltheholidays · 29/09/2022 06:51

@SantaCarlaCalifornia But they’re not good at their jobs, are they? just like the rest of the front bench.
They are nodding dogs there because they are right wing loons who are fervent brexiteers!

KK, who just tried to thrash the £ so his hedgefund chums could make a killing,

is good at his job is he?
Pritti Patel is a bully and has had numerous accusations against her by civil servants hushed up by BJ when he was PM. She also made jokes about starving the Irish!

james cleverly, a nasty piece of work and as thick as shit.
Suella Braverman thinks Brits are lazy and love the hand out benefit vulture.

Rishi Sunak laughing and ridiculing what he considers to be the working poor!!

These people are despicable, and they happen to be black and brown,!
Stop trying to excuse them because of that, unless of course politically you are of the same mind as them!

Alltheholidays · 29/09/2022 06:55

@Gymrabbit Yawn’ You found nothing of the sort.
Can you name a front bencher (any colour you like? Who is good at their job?

FOJN · 29/09/2022 06:59

Not diverse at all. They are there because it looks good for the torys to say that have Asian and black people on the front bench!

Fucking hell, seriously?

Amazing you can't see how racist you are whilst accusing others of racism.

Alltheholidays · 29/09/2022 07:17

@FOJN Who have I accused of racism?

pointythings · 29/09/2022 08:10

It is not racist to expect people in power of whatever colour to be competent. Diversity is a distraction here. Racism is bad. Competence is needed. The current government is not competent. All these things can be true simultaneously.

Other than conversations I've had with black friends. Ok.

But I'm happy to leave it there as it's clearly touchy for you.

Nope, nonsense.

I've never said Rupa was right, quite the opposite. Reading comprehension needed.

Signalbox · 29/09/2022 09:42

This thread is bizarre. The left are obsessed with EDI but as soon as the Tories unwittingly achieve something that looks like EDI suddenly it doesn't matter any more because apparently "competence" is the only thing that matters.

Also it's unlikely that Rupa Huq's views are not shared by other Labour MPs. It's probably why KS acted so quickly because he didn't want a load of Labour MPs attempting to defend her in the same way that multiple posters in this thread are attempting to do.

I had an abusive ex who used to tell me that the only reason I got into Oxford was because the college in question wanted to meet 'token diversity targets'.

I'll always remember that comment because inherent in it was the prejudiced idea that people of colour and/or from WC backgrounds are not smart enough to achieve things on their own merits.

Your comment is based on the same bigoted concept.
