Just when I'm starting to get on board with voting Labour, one of their MPs comes out with something like this.
Ms Huq was said to be sitting next to Labour chairwoman Anneliese Dodds when she made the remarks.
In the audio, Ms Huq could be heard saying: “Superficially he is a black man.
“He went to Eton, I think, he went to a very expensive prep school, all the way through, the top schools in the country.
“If you hear him on the Today programme, you wouldn’t know he is black.”

I had an abusive ex who used to tell me that the only reason I got into Oxford was because the college in question wanted to meet 'token diversity targets'.

I'll always remember that comment because inherent in it was the prejudiced idea that people of colour and/or from WC backgrounds are not smart enough to achieve things on their own merits.

Your comment is based on the same bigoted concept.

Some of these posts are a very low bar. It’s odd to see people so blind to the prejudice shown.

LadyWithLapdog · 29/09/2022 10:05

Nobody on this thread is defending her. People are pointing out KS dealt with it quickly, unlike the Tories who didn’t in similar circumstances.

LadyWithLapdog · 29/09/2022 10:11

Potniatheron - I came back from a few interviews feeling utterly deflated and thinking the only reason I was asked in is for diversity quotas. I don’t know if it was true, or just something I told myself when faced with hostile interviewers, when both parties know quickly it’s a waste of time. Your ex, however, used it as a put down.

@LadyWithLapdog why are you explaining my own life to me?

Do you think I'm not capable of figuring out meanings by myself?

Your comment and Rupa Huq's share the same condescending attituide.

In my experience middla class white Leftists are invariably too blinded by their own smugness to interrogate their prejudices. They are too busy explaining how the world works to others.

Gymrabbit · 29/09/2022 11:08

Clymene

tbf she didn’t say that it was ok for Huq to say that. In her bizarre world it’s fine to use disgusting racist slurs that offend and upset people as long as you are the same race as the person you are flinging bile at. So she would have had no issue at all if David Lammy had said it.

LadyWithLapdog · 29/09/2022 11:13

@potniatheron blimey, that’s an overreaction. I said I used the same idea about diversity ticking to buoy myself up, not to put myself down.

Huq has a long history of racism and was caught up in an antisemitism scandal. So her racism hasn't been dealt with quickly.

The MP I've seen compared is Pincher who was an alleged sex offender. It's a different offence so for a true comparison look instead at how Labour deals with its alleged sex offenders. As an example, I'm not sure if Clive Lewis - who was later cleared - was suspended. There are news reports that over 50 MPs from across all parties have allegations against them but it doesn't seem like any are suspended.

LadyWithLapdog · 29/09/2022 11:18

Erm, BJ. Not allegations of disgusting offences. Proven liar and the rest of it.

Yes I did overreact and I'm sorry for that. My ex was abusive and revealed himself over time to be racist, so recalling the conversation in question is quite painful to me and I misinterpreted your words and went off. Sorry!

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 29/09/2022 11:53

Can't stand her. Can't stand him. So they can bash each other til the cows come home for all I care

LadyWithLapdog · 29/09/2022 11:54

@potniatheron I’m sorry too 💐

Alltheholidays · 29/09/2022 13:01

The charges of anti semitism made against huq were dropped.

Really? You don't care about an MP disseminating racist prejudice?

bellac11 · 29/09/2022 18:43

Its an interesting view that Ive seen over the years that its automatically assumed that people from minority groups or historically oppressed groups are automatically left wing or should be.

I dont even find that to be the case and I dont have an opinion yet on whether I would expect it or not, needs more thinking about.

I think a lot of racism is born out of that and the comments throughout the thread defending what she said. It comes from a mistaken belief that he shouldnt even be on that 'side'.

As for the front bench being 'competant' Of course they're not in real values, but they are competent for their employer, chosen for what they will do for their party. Thats why he is where he is, because of his competence within his own party/employer, we dont have to think he is any good at his job but he isnt there just because he is black. Hes doing the job he was employed to do.

pointythings · 29/09/2022 21:26

@bellac11 well, you could look at that in two ways.

  1. Kwasi Kwarteng is employed as Chancellor of the Exchequer and as such is responsible for the sound running of the UK economy to the benefit of all its people. By this standard he is as competent as the stupidest of my four cats.

  2. Kwasi Kwarteng is employed as Tory Chancellor of the Exchequer with a brief to make all his bezzie rich mates as rich as possible really quickly before the Tories get booted out of office in the next election. If he trashes the economy in the process, it doesn't matter. By this standard he's a bloody genius.

I don't loathe him because he's black, I loathe him because he's just another money grubbing country trashing Tory.

Its both

Me and you (and all reasonable people) think its 1, because of course that is what government should do

In reality its 2 and they're blatant about it.

He isnt employed to do 1, he is employed to do 2 and by that marker he is like you say, a genius.

Ive never suggested anyone loathed him for being black by the way

dameofdilemma · 01/10/2022 13:53

RH comments were misguided and very badly expressed. She’s paying penance for that.

But the Tories virtue signalling over appointing ethnic minorities to the cabinet is loathsome. KK hasn’t shown any understanding or support of key issues that affect black people (unlike say David Lammy). That’s not to say he should have to. He’s probably as disinterested as the next (white Tory affluent) MP. But you can bet he’ll feign interest if he thinks he’ll win votes.

The issue isn’t unique to KK. So many MPs no longer have any true beliefs - it’s whatever will win votes.

You just know that many Tory MPs will in private be dismissive of black, Asian, female, less affluent etc MPs and whoever Truss appoints to the cabinet won’t change that.

Alltheholidays · 01/10/2022 21:33

i think KK is considered a useful idiot by the nut jobs in the of ERG, and the 1922 committee.
He’ll be scrabbling around on the back benches soon enough!
i see the Daily Mirror doesn’t even know what KK looks like😀

More whataboutery. Why is it so hard for a racism apologists to just accept when one of their own has been racist. Why write an essay say ‘but what about’.

Which part of my words "Rupa Huq made a racist comment" and There is plenty of racism, sexism and classism on the authoritarian left did you fail to comprehend?

You might want to look up the term "whataboutery" and then reread your own posts.

when you say the Tories do you mean random party members in the street or on mumsnet or the cabinet/MPs as I am yet to hear anyone in the govt comment on the race of the people in the top jobs. I only ever hear lefties moaning about it in a similar manner to Huq….

Alltheholidays · 04/10/2022 09:01

KK is going to be toast soon, as will thick Lizzie!
I wonder what morons the Tory party have lined up next.
They must be running out of imbeciles at this point!

Yeh that’s the point. It’s preferred as it’s not the left typical virtue signalling
