Just when I'm starting to get on board with voting Labour, one of their MPs comes out with something like this.
Ms Huq was said to be sitting next to Labour chairwoman Anneliese Dodds when she made the remarks.
In the audio, Ms Huq could be heard saying: “Superficially he is a black man.
“He went to Eton, I think, he went to a very expensive prep school, all the way through, the top schools in the country.
“If you hear him on the Today programme, you wouldn’t know he is black.”

KS dealt with it swiftly.

Tories? They’d laugh and call it virtue signalling or wokeism or some such.

Call what 'virtue signalling or wokeism'?

Canoewoman · 27/09/2022 20:22

What is a coconut?

headstone · 27/09/2022 20:27

Black on the outside white on the inside.

Jourdain11 · 27/09/2022 20:44

The first time she swore in, she "affirmed". After the 2017 election, she said, "Oh, I'll have a go at taking the oath, why not," which I think is an odd attitude towards something which some people believe in!

Canoewoman · 27/09/2022 20:55

@headstone ah ok, thanks.

Labour have an issue with Racism . The nasty party

🙄 Seriously? How desperate do you have to be to use that label when ample evidence of Tory racism is lying around in big heaps?

Coucous · 27/09/2022 21:08

Snoozer11 · 27/09/2022 18:53

Many black people in the media and political system are from privilege.

It always makes me wince when you hear people like say they had to work 10x as hard to get to where they are, when the door would never be opened at all if you went to a state school. Or they had absolutely nothing and grew up in a cold, damp flat, despite their parents sending all their kids to expensive private schools.

Oh the doors do open for both state school (a mixture of luck, hard work and determination) and privately educated black people. But it's no walk in the park. You have to work a LOT harder than your peers for the same recognition.

This woman's comment is racist. Why does she think it's perfectly acceptable for her to have attended a private school but not a black man? So that means he's not black enough?

This is it - I couldn't vote for them. I worry about what kind of people we would be allowing to run the country - that said, the tories including Boris have also said some questionable things before. Labour is worse in comparison

A 2020 report found that BAME households in the UK are over twice as likely to live in poverty as their white counterparts. What do you think Kwarteng's mini budget will do to them? I can tell you it will be very nasty.

LadyWithLapdog · 27/09/2022 21:15

KS acted swiftly. Whereas Boris was everyone’s friend and “just saying what we’re all thinking” when he was being a massive racist dick.

Scianel · 27/09/2022 21:51

I hate the lumping in of everyone non-white as "BAME", it's lazy and borderline if not outright racist.

LadyWithLapdog · 27/09/2022 21:58

I agree about BAME but I don’t think that’s what’s under discussion here. I first heard the BAME term during Covid, as an explanation of why mortality was higher in some groups of people.

I should imagine that Kwasi suffered racism at Eton and in the Tory party. And yet he prevailed. Good luck to him

It's also weird, because it's used to mean black and sub continental Asian, but strictly speaking should include Polish, Hispanic, Ecuadorean etc etc communities which I am pretty sure no one ever does.

That’s the bizarre thing IMO. “What do you think they say about you when you leave the room?”

I agree. I'm white but if I was was black I would find it bloody horrendous

Hmm, I wish good luck to the rest of us having to deal with his chaos... but yes after he resigns I hope he finds happiness doing something very quiet where he won't bother us again.

Cam22 · 27/09/2022 22:19

She shot her party in the foot. What amazes me is that she didn’t put her brain into gear: she actually thought it was ok for her to be racist. Unbelievable or unbelievably dense.

Did she really think she would be exempt because she is not white? Idiot racist.

OK, that's the term used in the survey. It was broken down into households in poverty: white -19%, Mixed ethnicity - 32%, Asian/Asian British -39%, Other ethnic- 42%, Black/African/Caribbean/Black British - 46%. These are the groups who will suffer most from Kwarteng's budget.

If so, I retract my "agree"- I was talking about agreeing with BAME being a lazy acronym.

Rupa Huq has already offered an unreserved apology btw:

twitter.com/RupaHuq/status/1574791834248876038

It was a shit thing to say. Now how about we discuss the endless comments from Boris and chums on race?

Her "unreserved apology" is utter shite.

She's doing this to save face or at least attempt to, because she got caught.
She meant what she said from her heart, and said what she said with chest.

It is astonishing how so many people on this thread are falling over themselves trying to find excuses for such bigotry. ‘Oh she just chose the wrong words’, ‘oh she must have meant something else’.

Just shows how prevalent Racism is. And the worst kind is this insidious apologist attitude because these people pass themselves off as the opposite to Racist.

Exactly. Full of damn racist apologists trying to explain what she said away.

LOL. How lovely you just heard this word recently when many of us have had to hear this awful term for years that lumps us all together.
