To hope that we welcome men fleeing Russia

Many are fleeing Putin's Press Gangs.
The EU Council President has recommended that the EU offer them asylum.

It must be bloody terrifying and, although we're not in the EU longer, I hope that this government follow his example and offer sanctuary as we have done for fleeing Ukrainians.

I know that they will be young men and not need to live with families in the same way that Ukrainian women and children did so although that would be ideal, it's not essential and hostels/hotels could be used.

Will you offer a home if asked? I can't but I would like to help in some way.
AIBU to hope that we will help these fleeing Russians?

I 100% wouldn't have a strange man in the house. I have a young daughter.

MindYourBeeswax · 24/09/2022 17:14

No, I wouldn't want that either.
I just hope that the government support the President of the EU and offer them asylum, as I say in a hotel or hostel until they have a job.

I wouldn't offer a home but they should be welcomed and accommodated.

walkingonsunshinekat · 24/09/2022 17:17

No, Russia is the enemy, many of those fleeing are doing so to avoid fighting in a war they previously supported, we'd also have no idea if they have fought in Ukraine and are potential war criminals.

Genuine dissidents another matter, but i'm guessing they fled Russia long ago or are in prison.

ImJustNotMeAnymore · 24/09/2022 17:18

Not on your Nelly. No.

MindYourBeeswax · 24/09/2022 17:19

I imagine the EU Council President gave that some consideration @walkingonsunshinekat and concluded it wasn't the case.

I wouldn't be opening my home to a Russian stranger no. Do you feel the same way about young men from Afghanistan, Syria etc?

bluejelly · 24/09/2022 17:20

Of course we should help them if we can. Same as Syrian, Sudanese, Ukrainian or Afghan refugees. Imagine if they were your sons or brothers.

MindYourBeeswax · 24/09/2022 17:22

I feel the same about them as Ukrainian refugees. All victims of Putin.

It would certainly be hypocritical if those who complain about young, healthy men wanting asylum from other countries were to be happy about young, healthy white men wanting asylum. As they usually say, there are a whole bunch of safe countries they stop off in first.

Or is it different for those people if the faces are the same colour as theirs?

Melonymelony · 24/09/2022 17:24

I heard Poland won’t let them in because they want them to stay and protest about the war, rather than run away… I’m not sure that’s a great option for them as individuals but I can see the logic

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/09/2022 17:26

No, wouldn’t host strangers of either sex.
they absolutely should be granted asylum, though, here and particularly in neighbouring countries. Our neighbouring town is full of empty hotels and b and bs that could be up and running pretty quickly.
the more fit young men that manage to get out, the sooner this despicable war comes to an end.

lickenchugget · 24/09/2022 17:27

Jesus, no.

fallfallfall · 24/09/2022 17:29

NO, they need to tell their leaders that they are not supportive of the assault on the ukraine.
why would any country agree to take the men running away?

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 24/09/2022 17:29

Funny how, when it’s white people, Brits are flinging their doors open to welcome them in. Never heard a peep when it was brown skinned people needing a home.

I actually think our country is not stable enough at the moment to withstand more immigrants. We have people who have lived here their whole lives who will suddenly be destitute this winter. I’d rather we pour energy into helping those people

Quincythequince · 24/09/2022 17:30

No chance.

Not much in the way of protesting the war before now because it now personally effects them has been evident really has it.

There has been a lot of support in Russia for this war.

Theluggage15 · 24/09/2022 17:33

Err no. They’re Russian. They’ve been quite happy living in Russia while Ukrainians suffered. Now they might suffer they’re running away.

Prescottdanni123 · 24/09/2022 17:36

The vetting procedure would have to be very intensive. We would need to do everything we could to separate the people genuinely running for their lives and the Russian spies/war criminals that have been involved in the rape and murder for innocents. And then we would need space to house them, funds for the NHS to cover the medical treatment of all these extra people etc etc.

You know what would happen to them if they did that? They have three choices, fight against Ukraine, stand up to Putin and at best be in jail for many years, at worst be killed or run away.

meatballsoup · 24/09/2022 17:36

Fill the country full of young fit men who also happen to be our enemy. Yeah sounds like a great plan. What could possibly go wrong?

whatkatydid2013 · 24/09/2022 17:36

We could generally do a lot better in offering asylum to those fleeing war and persecution but it requires investment not only in helping those coming into the country but also to help those in poverty in the uk. We are hosting people from Ukraine. I’m pleased we’ve been able to do it but I have my concerns about how they will manage after a year if we ask them to leave (which we may very well do as sharing a house is really hard at times) as there are such shortages of public/affordable private housing. I also see a lot of resentment about what one group gets vs another and think that’s liable to cause a level of unrest eventually if we continue to offer different schemes for different groups &/or refugees are (or are seen to be) getting more help than those from the UK who are in poverty. I hope to see a time we will offer help to more refugees from all countries at war but I don’t expect it to happen any time soon and my impression is it’s not something that is widely supported.

Threadkillacilla · 24/09/2022 17:36

I protested the Iraq war but I didn't leave the country. I would if I'd been conscripted though.

Judging by this thread, there won’t be many doors flinging open.

We're full up with young men who arrive here in dinghy's. We are a small island, suffering financially. Let them stay on mainland Europe. Enough is enough.
