To hope that we welcome men fleeing Russia

MindYourBeeswax · 24/09/2022 17:07

Many are fleeing Putin's Press Gangs.
The EU Council President has recommended that the EU offer them asylum.

It must be bloody terrifying and, although we're not in the EU longer, I hope that this government follow his example and offer sanctuary as we have done for fleeing Ukrainians.

I know that they will be young men and not need to live with families in the same way that Ukrainian women and children did so although that would be ideal, it's not essential and hostels/hotels could be used.

Will you offer a home if asked? I can't but I would like to help in some way.
AIBU to hope that we will help these fleeing Russians?

Doubtful many civilised societies would welcome the orcs

I wonder, being half Russian does that mean I’m only half an orc, and only half the enemy?

It’s men fleeing Russia rather than women because it’s men being conscripted. Men stayed and fought in Ukraine because they couldn’t leave, and because they also wanted to defend their homeland from invasion. A lot of the men fleeing will be the ones opposed to the war, they’re not going to want to participate in it.

if Europe are going to do it, then why not us too

We have left the EU

Yes, I know.
That's why I wondered if we were going to do it, as well as the EU!

Out of interest are the men stick at the border being let through, albeit slowly, or is it blocked completely

Just googled and saw the long line of cars

Although good statistics are hard to obtain in Russia, it does seem that the war has been very much approved of so far by these same men who have suddenly decided that they will leave rather than actually go and fight themselves.

Now, maybe they have had an epiphany, or even if they haven’t maybe we should still help them to leave to deprive Putin of more thugs for his campaign, but I’d be pretty uncomfortable letting in those who were cheering him on only a week ago.

Yes, you did.
I said opening our homes would be a perfect solution but understood that many, including myself, wouldn't want a strange male living with them.
So failing that, I suggested that it might be an idea for us as a nation to do what the EU will likely be doing and offer them refuge, whether that be in hotels or hostels.

All these objections. I imagine the EU Council President has also thought of these and, with his team have decided they are not insurmountable and worth overcoming. Or do some Mumsnetters think he might not have thought of them!

I see, thank you for clarifying.
So you won't take one into your home, even though you believe it to be a good solution. Perfect, in fact.
Failing that, hotels and hostels?

Ok. So because we can't offer a perfect solution, let's not offer one at all!

What an odd way to live your life.

What would young Russian men, who probably do not speak English, do here? How would they pass the time? I understand Russian men are the world's greatest alcoholics (along with Belarusians).

Watzzap · 24/09/2022 18:31

We can’t house the people already here, never mind more immigrants! No way should we take any of these Russian men.

So many of our own people are struggling with the rise in the cost of living, we need to help those who are already here first.

Bettyboo12 · 24/09/2022 18:32

No, I can barely afford to feed my own children and put a roof over our heads never mind invite a total stranger into my home and financially support them. The whole world has gone to absolute shit. Our country has gone to shit our poor NHS, schools, housing are overcrowded and I dread for the future of our own children. This country is in a financial crisis and whilst I would love to help and support others and really feel for them I think we also have to face up to the fact that we can't help everyone. It's shit, it's really is.

GirlInTheDryShirt · 24/09/2022 18:32

I’m not sure that allowing men of fighting age from an enemy country to flock in is a good idea, especially given said enemy country uses the pretext of “ethnic Russian populations” in its neighbouring countries to annex/invade them.

Did I say we shouldn't offer a solution?
No! I just don't think yours is a good one.

Maireas · 24/09/2022 18:34

It's easy to spend other people's money, OP.
There needs to be a different kind of solution, encouraging dissent in Russia. Topple Putin.

So if you don’t want to have someone in your home what’s your next-best solution? Will you offer a tent in your garden, perhaps, or pay for a few to stay in an Air BnB?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/09/2022 18:35

Russia is the enemy

The enemies are the politicians, the military and much of the state machine rather than the great mass of the people, though some will certainly sympathise

So the issue would be sorting out who's who before allowing them in, and does anyone seriously believe that's likely to happen?

charcharchat · 24/09/2022 18:36

I have a Russian friend living in the U.K. she is so pro the war but I know full well if anyone in her family got affected they'd be running over here. So no. Russia are the enemy. Not all Russians but I can't tell which ones so I won't be supporting any.
This country has enough problems already internally with race relations. I wouldn't want to add to that problem.

Are you sure you’re not a Martha’s Vineyard resident? With every post, it sounds more and more like it.

Absolutely not!

Is your screen not loading properly?
I have already said, a couple of time, hotels and hostels. Maybe you missed that.

I have nothing against Russian people, they are people just like us. I do, however, feel a bit like those who say we can't even help our own right now, let alone anyone else. Can we just take a small number of the scientists, doctors, nurses, perhaps? That could be helpful to us and manageable.

So you are offering to pay for hostels and hotels? I did miss that, sorry, I had thought that you were suggesting doing absolutely fuck-all yourself and just wanting someone else to organise and fund this.

How many people are you going to be paying for?

Theluggage15 · 24/09/2022 18:40

Hotels and hostels? Who’s paying for this shit?
Will it be a hotel in your town, next to your house? We’re supporting Ukraine and Ukrainians not Russians.

CaptainSamCarter · 24/09/2022 18:40

The contrast between the Iranian women protesting and the Russian men fleeing is quite stark I think.

Wibble128 · 24/09/2022 18:40

I would rather they followed the outstanding example of barvery shown by the Iranian women and started a revolution against Putin etc.

ImNotGreta · 24/09/2022 18:40

Oh, and where are these spare hotels and hostels? Presumably you’ve actually done your research, and know where there is capacity, could you share that on here?

I’d hate for it to look like you were just virtue signalling and doing absolutely nothing to make a difference.
