To think Truss’ government has lost the trust of people who voted Conservatives for the first time at the last general election?

Mr Cameron adds that a lot of people had put their trust in the Conservatives for the first time and Boris Johnson was right to say the job now was to cement that trust and govern for the whole country.” - www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/election-2019-50755004/page/7

This stood out to me at the last general election victory. David Cameron recognised the vulnerability of the majority won by Boris. Truss’ government ought to be reminded and heed the warning.

Truss shows very little understanding of how important that trust is for uniting the whole country (hence the majority win by Boris, not her). Whole country means not just the privileged few who disproportionately benefit from her government’s economically unwise mini-budget (Pound sinks as investors question huge tax cuts).

Both Truss and Starmer have not been tested in a general election in their own right. At least they have something in common…

I think Johnson had started the ball rolling and Truss has kicked a home goal for many voters

that doesn’t mean they shall automatically switchback to Labour so Labour must get complacent if they cote for other parties this might be a problem for both Labour and the Tories

Let's fucking hope so. Frankly the fuckwits who voted for this shit show deserve to feel the consequences of that choice though so I can't say I care all that much.

(Those who suffer through others' fuck ups have my genuine, deepest sympathy. What an absolute shit show).

What consequences are you thinking about? The main “consequence” for us so far has been this tax cut, which is quite welcome, and will spread the burden more fairly.

For me as a higher rate tax payer, the tax cut has already been wiped out by the increased cost of buying anything that is imported.

If you are benefiting from the tax cut, then you must earn a lot.

Maybe @ImNotGreta gets paid in US dollars?

Yes, we’re both a long way into the additional band, although DH is paid in Euros and taxed in Europe, so he’s already paying less than he would here, and of course we’re benefiting from the sell-off of the pound.

No, I’m paid and taxed in the UK in GBP, although as above DH isn’t.

Given that I am paid 1/3 or less of what you are, but am still paid more than I need, may I ask why you need a tax cut?

SpinningAwaySadly · 24/09/2022 19:41

Now maybe devote your ire towards something which deserves it rather than a left wing woman struggling with the shit poor political offerings available.

Worth repeating, from @AtrociousCircumstance

I didn’t need one, and hadn’t said that I did, so am not sure what point you are trying to make.

You don't need a tax cut, I don't need a tax cut.

But someone who is choosing between heat and food needs help, but the government are refusing to do anything for them.

Florenz · 24/09/2022 19:45

Most of those seats will return to Labour at the next election, they went Tory for 2 reasons, Brexit, and Boris, and neither are an issue anymore. Truss does not appeal to the "red wall" at all.

mamabear715 · 24/09/2022 11:05

I always vote Conservative. Yes, I know it's not the done thing on MN, but I do! Deal with it!
However.. if things stay as they are, I won't be voting at all in the next general election. A five year old could have come up with a better 'mini budget'. My heart sank as I realised that they have done what people always accuse them of doing, making the rich richer & the poor poorer. There's no defending that. :-(

Theyve always done this - why have you only just noticed now?

akabluebell · 24/09/2022 19:47

Anyone else on here be happy to pay more tax. We are relatively well off and more than happy to, but no party has come up with that as a policy so far.

I have never voted Tory and never will.* *

Blossomtoes · 24/09/2022 19:48

pisspants · 24/09/2022 11:17

It's shocking that they have not even tried to disguise their policies in any way. Usually at least some crumbs are thrown to the least well off. It shows exactly who they are and who they are for. I'm hoping this is the nail in the coffin for them now.

Yes, the mask hasn’t slipped, they’ve ripped it off. Their contempt for most of the population is naked. I can’t wait to see them gone.

Who does Truss appeal to?

Florenz · 24/09/2022 19:53

I think people would be happier to pay more tax if they had more faith in the public sector to spend it wisely. As it stands, most of it goes into a few greedy pockets. The whole public sector needs a MASSIVE overhaul, on an unprecedented scale. It needs to be run for the benefit of the public, not for the benefit of those working in it, particularly management.

AtrociousCircumstance · 24/09/2022 19:54

Thank you @SpinningAwaySadly

Florenz · 24/09/2022 19:55

jgw1 · 24/09/2022 19:52

Who does Truss appeal to?

People who would vote Tory whoever the leader was. Very few other people.

MidnightAnnie · 24/09/2022 19:56

I still wouldn't vote for Starmer or Raynor.

akabluebell · 24/09/2022 19:59

Starmer has integrity but doesn't have much presence . . .

Florenz · 24/09/2022 20:04

There aren't many super-charismatic politicians who can inspire people into voting for them in politics in general today. Most people just hold their nose and vote for the best of a bad bunch.

Blossomtoes · 24/09/2022 20:05

akabluebell · 24/09/2022 19:59

I’ve had enough “presence” to last the rest of my life. Attlee was virtually invisible, look what his 1945 government achieved.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 spot on

HRTQueen · 24/09/2022 20:15

It’s about being able to connect with voters

Starmer isn’t doing this particularly well but now he isn’t against someone that very much did. I doubt Truss will

but he does need to sort out his shadow cabinet they are so invisible where are the strong robust MP’s that Blair and Brown picked ones with good reputations and made themselves visible the party is lacking and needs to get their act together not just rely on the Tory party fucking things up for themselves

and please get rid of Rayner

Lonelycrab · 24/09/2022 20:19

Who does Truss appeal to?

Less and less people the more time goes by. Maybe that’s the idea, or more likely, they don’t care anymore. Or it’s all part of Johnson’s second coming Envy most definitely not envy
