To think Truss’ government has lost the trust of people who voted Conservatives for the first time at the last general election?

Mr Cameron adds that a lot of people had put their trust in the Conservatives for the first time and Boris Johnson was right to say the job now was to cement that trust and govern for the whole country.” - www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/election-2019-50755004/page/7

This stood out to me at the last general election victory. David Cameron recognised the vulnerability of the majority won by Boris. Truss’ government ought to be reminded and heed the warning.

Truss shows very little understanding of how important that trust is for uniting the whole country (hence the majority win by Boris, not her). Whole country means not just the privileged few who disproportionately benefit from her government’s economically unwise mini-budget (Pound sinks as investors question huge tax cuts).

Both Truss and Starmer have not been tested in a general election in their own right. At least they have something in common…

AIBU - To think Truss’ government has lost the trust of people who voted Conservatives for the first time at the last general election?

My MiL is conservative, but even she has had enough. She hated Boris, too.

SirCharlesRainier · 24/09/2022 16:50

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel. Anyone who 'trusted' this lot in 2019, especially red wallers, is beyond help.

I'm generally pretty empathetic but anyone who voted for these arseholes in 2019 in the hope that they'd screw other people but not them, and is now struggling themselves, can whistle for any sympathy from me.

BlippiIsAnnoying · 24/09/2022 15:03

Fuck em, they deserve everything they get. Time after time the Tories show us who they are and fuck the country. I'm past caring.

Meant to quote this above.

This attitude really fucks me off too. Imagine still voting for this shit and using 'womens rights' as your reasoning as if the cuntservatives aren't causing far, far more damage to women and their rights than Labour. Fucking hell.

And I say that as somebody firmly GC.

Yes.

the whole trans shit show happened because of the Tories. Male bodied folk in women's single sex spaces, hospitals, prisons etc. happened under the Conservatives. Self ID was a Theresa May policy, championed by Penny TWAW Mordaunt, who is the current Leader of the Commons.

yes.

I know!

And the loudest voice against this is Rosie Duffeild, a LABOUR MP.

Self ID is nothing but an excuse to vote Tory because you like voting Tory but are too ashamed to admit it.

I like voting Tory because I like doffing my cap to my superiors and I know by place. Long may they continue to shaft me.

Qisk · 24/09/2022 17:05

Manifesto is what drives me, with the economy being central because a strong economy is essential. It pays for things.

I have been a conservative voter and a labour voter in the past.

Liz Truss' manifesto is financial and political suicide. Most of the levelling up and infrastructure projects were pre-announced and factored into tax and borrowing plans.

Many people know very well they are well off and do not want tax cuts. They know that despite some leakage and inefficiency it is better to pay taxes and have roads repaired and cancer treated in an organised and regulated way.

What we now have is an annual interest bill on servicing public debt approaching £100 billion a year. That is about £3,600 for every household. That is the interest alone.

I will vote for whichever party is going to put an end to this naive stupidity, for this reason alone.

Qisk · 24/09/2022 17:06

If Liz Truss were even half decent and believed in levelling-up, outlawing zero hours contracts would be top of the agenda.

Can anyone point to anything in the Tory manifesto that they have enacted in the past 6months?

Interesting that some erstwhile conservative voters on this thread are now saying they won't vote conservative at the next election. Can only hope that this sentiment is shared more widely in the general population

It is shared have no fear.

I live in an affluent market town which is die hard tory. Our fb group of 30k is now a very awkward place to be for many 😂

Qisk · 24/09/2022 17:27

Yes definitely shared here. In fact I am contacting my local MP who has been in the job for 25 years to tell him I am not voting Conservative next time.

There is never an appropriate time to gamble the nations finances. Putting all on red post pandemic, with a major war in Europe when the world is undergoing a seismic change away from the era of cheap money is just absolute madness. It is despotic.

itsgettingweird · 24/09/2022 17:32

What aren't posters saying Boris knows what a woman is being satirical?
Have are they actually being serious?

Worrying I don't think they are.

There is still a huge number of people out in the general population that think Johnson did a good job - got Brexit done - vaccines etc.

It scares me they wandering around amongst us as much as Truss and her gang!

Suedomin · 24/09/2022 17:36

"Most people vote conservatives… hence why they’re in power.*
The way our electoral system works this isn't strictly true. Eg in the 2019 election which was a landslide for the torys. They only got 43% of the vote. So in effect most people voted against them.

Then why is it when you ask what they mean by a woman they don't seem to know?

itsgettingweird · 24/09/2022 17:52

I think people choose to pretend not to know what a woman is because you can't then argue against them iyswim?

You can't argue a trans position over woman if a woman is never defined. I'm not sure I'm explaining myself well?

"Got Brexit done"
I'd love to know what they think they mean by that. Brexit is a shitshow

We have left the EU, with all its pettifogging regulations about the amount of sewage we can pump into our water. We have taken back control of our borders so we have more immigrants dangerously crossing the channel than ever before. Our laws are no longer made by elected representatives in Brussels, we have taken back control and instead we have an unelected Head of State and Head of Government.

I always vote Conservative. Yes, I know it's not the done thing on MN, but I do! Deal with it!
However.. if things stay as they are, I won't be voting at all in the next general election. A five year old could have come up with a better 'mini budget'. My heart sank as I realised that they have done what people always accuse them of doing, making the rich richer & the poor poorer. There's no defending that. :-(

This. (Not always but recently) It's not just the new Conservative voters that they're going to lose but the medium and long term ones too. I was having this conversation with my mum earlier today and she's always been a staunch Tory. She'll not vote in the next election. Granted I can't see her voting Labour but she'll stay at home and rightly so. They've gone past being the Nasty Party - that would actually be a compliment now.

noodlezoodle · 24/09/2022 18:48

Floomobal · 24/09/2022 16:46

Your heart sank when the Tories did what the Tories always do? And you always vote Conservative?

There are some really stupid people walking amongst us. ☹️

Why would you vote Tory and then feel bad that their policies benefit the rich and punish the poor? It’s incomprehensible

Absolutely this! The Tories have ALWAYS been about making the rich richer and the poor poorer. This is not new in any way. How do people not realise this?!

It's shocking that they have not even tried to disguise their policies in any way. Usually at least some crumbs are thrown to the least well off. It shows exactly who they are and who they are for. I'm hoping this is the nail in the coffin for them now.

Yes just brazenly selfish c**ts niw!

ShirtingForkBalls · 24/09/2022 19:08

MissyB1 · 24/09/2022 11:24

Well I’m wondering how all those “red wall” voters who turned Tory at the last election are feeling now? Embarrassed? Let down? Or do they still think this Government care about them?

The turkeys who voted for xmas 🦃🦃🦃🦃🎄🎄🎄

Completely agree @PollyEsther

mamabear715 · 24/09/2022 19:20

@myleftventricle Yes, I'll be doing exactly the same as your mum, & staying home. I certainly wouldn't vote for the 'other side' & the rest of them, well, a wasted vote.

Funny how Conservative voters are usually polite too, and don't have a go at Labour voters..

My Tory MP is a model of politeness. Which is why he was suspended for abusing commons staff.

itsgettingweird · 24/09/2022 19:25

Seriously 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Voters on both sides blame the other side for having different policies.

The right wing media have a HUGE dig at the left for minor things whilst ignoring the HUGE things the right do wrong. Even when it's the same indiscretions Labour are held to higher account.

The DM managed to run for 10 days with Kiers beer!

And not everyone voted for a party for life. Many of us are centric and swing with the manifesto.

The current policies Truss is putting through are the complete opposite of the manifesto - levelling up anyone? That's what I voted for.
