To think Truss’ government has lost the trust of people who voted Conservatives for the first time at the last general election?

Mr Cameron adds that a lot of people had put their trust in the Conservatives for the first time and Boris Johnson was right to say the job now was to cement that trust and govern for the whole country.” - www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/election-2019-50755004/page/7

This stood out to me at the last general election victory. David Cameron recognised the vulnerability of the majority won by Boris. Truss’ government ought to be reminded and heed the warning.

Truss shows very little understanding of how important that trust is for uniting the whole country (hence the majority win by Boris, not her). Whole country means not just the privileged few who disproportionately benefit from her government’s economically unwise mini-budget (Pound sinks as investors question huge tax cuts).

Both Truss and Starmer have not been tested in a general election in their own right. At least they have something in common…

AIBU - To think Truss’ government has lost the trust of people who voted Conservatives for the first time at the last general election?

I voted Tory in 2010 and a couple of time before that. I would never, never vote for them again no matter how much they changed. Don't trust them and what they stand for.

Anyone else I know who voted Conservative just isn't going to vote next time. They are really disillusioned. I like KS, but I'm not hearing any policies from Labour of Lib Dem and nothing about fixing the housing issues in the uK which is the root of so many issues. Will probably vote Labour, but that will change if any other non Tory party chooses to tackle housing.

DontTrustThisPoster · 24/09/2022 13:37

We personally benefit to the tune of about £8k with this new budget, yet I now consider myself absolutely politically homeless because we are aghast at what the budget means for those less fortunate. And until labour sort themselves out, there’s no one left to vote for.

Qwerkie · 24/09/2022 13:43

I usually vote Conservative - I can’t bring myself to agree with most of what they came up with especially focusing on UC when they refuse to apply a windfall tax to energy companies. Too much focus on FTB with the stamp duty cuts - if you want downsizers to move out of family homes then they should have been incentivised more

Labour, Lib Dems, Green & SNP need to agree to form a joint government if there is a hung parliament, Labour need to stop thinking they can win an election on their own. I know the polls suggest they can win with a massive majority but they need to cover all eventualities.

That would be electoral suicide for Labour and the Lib Dems in Scotland. And voters in England really don't like the idea of the SNP being in a coalition as well, especially since they only stand in Scotland.

This kind of coalition is a non-starter and will push more Scottish Unionists towards the Conservatives. Starmer understands this which is why he's been trying to portray Labour as a patriotic pro-UK Unionist party.

Labour needs to boot the SDLP before they'll be convincing on that score.

Well it’s all gone quiet on levelling up.

That's what I'm most gutted about.

I live in south east (I'm actually south central geographically) and a fairly affluent area but I'm totally for levelling up the country.

I'm gutted it's gone quiet and they've made the rich richer.

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/09/2022 14:34

@AtrociousCircumstance the whole trans shit show happened because of the Tories. Male bodied folk in women's single sex spaces, hospitals, prisons etc. happened under the Conservatives. Self ID was a Theresa May policy, championed by Penny TWAW Mordaunt, who is the current Leader of the Commons.

Tory MPs have reported women to the police and employers for retweeting JKR. Jamie Wallis, Con MP for Bridgend is becoming a woman.

The whole at least the Conservatives know what a woman is was a lie.

LimitIsUp · 24/09/2022 14:44

Interesting that some erstwhile conservative voters on this thread are now saying they won't vote conservative at the next election. Can only hope that this sentiment is shared more widely in the general population

user1471505494 · 24/09/2022 14:48

I think the Conservatives are going to regret getting rid of Boris

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/09/2022 14:51

This attitude really fucks me off too. Imagine still voting for this shit and using 'womens rights' as your reasoning as if the cuntservatives aren't causing far, far more damage to women and their rights than Labour. Fucking hell.

And I say that as somebody firmly GC.

Yes.

Any Questions is on R4 at 1pm, from Manchester. I tend to be guided by their audience response for queries like this. Andy Burnham is on it if fans want to hear him. I suspect he's feeling pretty peeved. I certainly am.

He called the tax cuts obscene and received rapturous applause. He explained that even if the government thought this was a policy which would create growth, which he doubted because it is largely based on a theory which might not work out in practice, at the time of such a huge cost-of-living crisis the government should also ensure that they are putting on supportive measures for those at the bottom who cannot wait months to see whether this economic gamble has any positive effect at all on their lives. Many people who are barely getting by will see nothing from this while they see the very richest having extra money to spend on their next trip to the Caribbean.

This is what Boris hopes. The cynic in me thinks he and his supporters (if in fact there still are any) have set up Liz Truss to be so spectacularly unpopular that he can ride back in after a year or so and all will be forgiven as on hindsight, he will seem the less worse option.

I always vote Conservative. Yes, I know it's not the done thing on MN, but I do! Deal with it!
However.. if things stay as they are, I won't be voting at all in the next general election. A five year old could have come up with a better 'mini budget'. My heart sank as I realised that they have done what people always accuse them of doing, making the rich richer & the poor poorer. There's no defending that. :-(

I’m so heartened to read posts like this, I hope more Conservative voters stay at home.

BlippiIsAnnoying · 24/09/2022 15:03

Fuck em, they deserve everything they get. Time after time the Tories show us who they are and fuck the country. I'm past caring.

I sort of get that but I have young adult dc who have to live in this country so I am still invested (albeit permanently disappointed and frustrated)

AtrociousCircumstance · 24/09/2022 11:39

If only Labour weren’t so utterly shit. Obviously the Tories are a scourge on the country in practical, ideological, ethical - in absolutely any way you can list.

But whilst Starmer can’t protect women’s rights and slavishly obeys the misogynistic pressures of trans activism (ie, male rights) his party is not worthy to vote for.

it’s an absolute shit show.

Its nice to have a revisit from Boris knows what a woman is. Thank you for that.
Just yesterday on another thread we had a But Jeremy Corbyn.
I do hope we have a Kier's beer soon to complete the set.

newnamethanks · 24/09/2022 16:23

🍻full set @jgw1 😀

AtrociousCircumstance · 24/09/2022 16:28

@jgw1 I didn’t say anything about Boris. You’re just being deliberately facetious and dense.

AtrociousCircumstance · 24/09/2022 16:30

Obviously you and other posters aren’t concerned about women’s rights from this perspective and just want to get froth-mouthed about anyone mentioning it.

@TooBigForMyBoots i appreciated your angle though, thank you.

Kendodd · 24/09/2022 16:31

Dont worry OP, I'm sure they'll just drum up some hatred against 'others' and have their voters flocking back. Doesn't matter how much damage they do, they'll just blame someone else.

Actually this poster is very extremely clever on politics threads - but has a very dry satirical sense of humour that if you don't know - can come across the right way.

It's worthwhile following the bye Boris threads.

emmetgirl · 24/09/2022 16:40

"Most people vote conservatives… hence why they’re in power"

No they don't. At least since 1945 no party has ever received more than 50% of the vote or anywhere near it. Therefore at any general election more people DON'T want the party that forms the government, to actually be the government. It's called the first past the post system.

@AtrociousCircumstance I may well be facetious and dense, but at least I am not dense enough to believe that the Tories have done anything to promote womens rights.

What aren't posters saying Boris knows what a woman is being satirical?
Have are they actually being serious?

AtrociousCircumstance · 24/09/2022 16:44

I don’t believe they have either! Ffs. I’m just commenting on feeling starved of other options when I will never vote Tory!

Which I thought I’d made clear but obviously not clear enough for you.

Now maybe devote your ire towards something which deserves it rather than a left wing woman struggling with the shit poor political offerings available.

Your heart sank when the Tories did what the Tories always do? And you always vote Conservative?

There are some really stupid people walking amongst us. ☹️

Why would you vote Tory and then feel bad that their policies benefit the rich and punish the poor? It’s incomprehensible
