To think most Brexiteers must now regret their vote?

If you voted Brexit, do you feel like you have been able to "Take Back Control?" If so, where? Can anyone state one positive change since Brexit - I would genuinely like to hear at least something. Anything?

YANBU - I voted Brexit but now regret it
YABU - I voted Brexit and can see a benefit

OP posts:
birthdaytou · 24/09/2022 12:28

very few brexiteers will admit it was a mistake even if they suffer because of it.

FreddyHG · 24/09/2022 12:29

Labour should have voted for Theresa's deal. Got Brexit done then crack on with an alternative plan.

SunscreenCentral · 24/09/2022 12:30

Yes. I have one. I live in another jurisdiction and Brexit has shut up many fringe idiots mouthing off about exiting the EU in my own country, so that's a definite benefit.

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2022 12:30

The only way to know for sure re regret would be to redo

And that’s not on cards

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/09/2022 12:33

Lots of Leave voters here regret it. They voted Leave because they thought it would strengthen the Union.

After yesterday I think those who voted Leave to stick it to the Wealthy metropolitan elite are probably regretting their decision.

birthdaytou · 24/09/2022 12:34

We have poor growth rates and a labour shortage across many sectors (I know this first hand from what I do) it’s really difficult to manage and from personal experience just means longer working hours. Immigration won’t stop it will just come from further away. We live in an increasingly globalised world and that isn’t going to change. Brexiteers voted to move backwards not forwards, and that also goes for the erosion of our rights as workers, consumers or even as women. It’s a shit show, but they’ll never admit it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/09/2022 12:37

We have navy blue passports now.

  • printed in Poland. 🤔
Alltheholidays · 24/09/2022 12:38

They will never admit it. What they will do is blame someone/something else.
It’s always somebody else’s fault.

That’s pretty much how Brexiters think. That the massive victim mentality!

WanderingFruitWonderer · 24/09/2022 12:41

I voted Remain. But honestly don't know that much can be achieved by discussions of this nature. Though I also understand why they happen.
I personally think we need to focus our energies now on making sure we get rid of the current extremely right-wing government asap, and make the best of the situation. I don't blame most Leave voters for what happened. So many lies told.

greenhousegal · 24/09/2022 12:41

Well Northern Ireland has benefited greatly due to the protocol, which as you may have guessed gives them semi EU benefits in trade with the Republic of Ireland. They are doing very well thank you, which is why I suspect there are mutterings about ditching the protocol by Westminster. Can't be having a part of the Union doing so well while others are not, now can we? And it is all due to quasi EU facilitation of free trade under the protocol.

Just an example of a Brexit bonus that I doubt was intended!

RoachTheHorse · 24/09/2022 12:48

I refuse to join these conversations in any depth because there is a refusal to understand that not all people who voted brexit are an homogenous mass who are racist and stupid.

Any more than all remain voters are narrow minded and daft enough to make judgments about people based on how they voted on a matter that was full of complexity.

The discussion always ends up with everyone being unkind and not thinking before they speak.

But no, I don't regret my vote because I based on things that matter too me and fully expected hardship. Admittedly I didn't foresee a global pandemic, war in Ukraine, Russia bully boying about, or Boris. Although Boris may have been a consideration with hindsight.

Wafflesnsniffles · 24/09/2022 12:52

Im intrigued to know whether most people who are moaning that this thread is goady and the op is a twat voted Brexit themselves. It sure sounds like it tbh from the majority of responses here.
I dont doubt there are lots of other threads asking this question but even as a regular MNetter I havent read them so Im reading this one!

There are MASSES of threads that ask the same question - what should I call my baby/cat/dog? How do I stop my baby crying/Inlaws being difficult? Are they invalid too just because they've been asked before?
Its trite but why not just scroll past if its not of interest to you - just like you do with all the other threads of no interest.

Right wing and Brexit are very much entwinned.

I'd like to see the UK forge closer trading and cooperative ties with the EU, so much of our trade, science, economy and defence is tied to Europe and a nation like ours should be at the top table driving change.

We'll never rejoin though, the country is too divided even if there is a majority to rejoin or regret.

Alltheholidays · 24/09/2022 12:54

NI is doing well! The tories want to get rid of the protocol,
as do a small number of very bitter unionists who cannot bear to see how successful all ireland co operation is.

most people of all persuasions in ni want to keep the protocol but you will never see this reported on mainstream british news!
Biden has made it clear if thick Lizzie does anything to the detriment of the good Friday agreement there will be no us trade deal!

Freshberry · 24/09/2022 13:01

I voted for Brexit. I'm probably not what a lot of you expect, I'm degree educated, lived in London at the time and read a variety of news sources to try and ensure I'm not living in an echo chamber.

I wasn't surprised by the Brexit result, extremely close though it was. I understood the pain of those who voted remain and actually felt if pretty much half the country voted remain, that there should have been another way to resolve it (don't ask me how!)

I honestly don't know if I regret my vote yet. I think it's still too soon to know how it will all play out but I'm still not sure if Europe, in its form then and current form now is working the way that it should.

vera99 · 24/09/2022 13:06

To all those who come on this thread to say why this thread blah blah blah - let me guess you voted for the damn thing, can't think of anything positive to say but still need to post to say that.

Looking like Truss and her 'bestie' crush Kwasi are about to deliver the Full English Brexit, don't worry the calamitous drop in sterling will keep you at home spending your declining pounds and backing Britain.

Britannia Unchained indeed -but from reality.

BTW Truss thinks the Chinese work ethic is something us lazy Brits should be following

the80sweregreat · 24/09/2022 13:31

Just my own opinion.
The government asked a question in 2016 and it was very stark , leave or remain
It was all completely stupid and I hope that the ones in charge back then wake up every day in a cold sweat and hate themselves forever more. I'm not that optimistic they even care though.
It was all to keep out UKIP , which is ironic as they are now in charge in albeit in wolfs clothing anyway so it didn't really achieve that much (in political terms anyway, for those who wanted remain to win) Its now a big shift to the right.
Unless this was how they wanted it to turn out.
Which is a lot of forwards thinking on their part.
They probably thought remain would win.

AnybodyAnywhere · 24/09/2022 13:31

Just putting another aspect to this.

Yes, obviously those voted for Brexit (imho were conned into voting for it) are the cause of us leaving.
But there was a huge percentage of people who didn’t vote, all that I know claim that they were Remainers but thought it was a forgone conclusion.. Surprisingly almost everyone on MN voted…and voted Remain…
I think that those who were too complacent (or too lazy) to go and use their vote were just as responsible for the outcome as those who voted Leave.

QuentininQuarantino · 24/09/2022 13:35

I know one brexiter and she regrets it. She is MIL and her 3 kids have all moved abroad since the vote (we are research scientists and her other ds’ married to Europeans) - she tells her friends she voted remain now.

Tinkity · 24/09/2022 13:50

pickledeggnog · 24/09/2022 10:17

So many are too dense to even understand the link between their vote and what's happening now

So many don't understand the wholesale gas price issue for example and can't understand why we are paying more than Germany etc.

Well according to this, there is no link between brexit & higher gas prices & it’s your do with other factors. Can you explain more? Genuinely interested.

There are no Brexit positives and the budget we saw yesterday is the end result of Brexit to help the wealthy, create a low tax uk, deregulation, fracking, fill beaches and rivers with poo etc.

I doubt many regret their vote. It’s too late anyway, the EU will not accept the UK back in its current state which is only going to get worse.

Finally the Tories start acting like they are on the right wing instead of nu labour. I think I like the this.

YellowTreeHouse · 24/09/2022 12:24

YABU. I don’t regret it at all - it’s the best thing for our country.

You’ll see it in time, and thank us.

Hell will freeze over before I see fit to thank people who voted Leave.

Yep hubby's been a builder for 30 years and every day he's getting calls about jobs rates on agency have shot up to £23PH from lows of £11 in 2010 to 15ish. Brother is an infrastructure engineer and he's the same, yes theres a labour shortage but the upside to that is it pushes wages up for everyone else. My employer has to pay over minimum wage to attract employees and anything that puts money into the hands of the lower earning sections of society can only be a good thing with the cost of living increases affecting those the hardest

Builders and construction workers are not the lowest paid in society! They are some of the higher paid, so much so that the lower-earning sections of society can’t afford to employ them to do essential maintenance.

lannistunut · 24/09/2022 14:09

There are no real positives. The only positive is that the people who wanted to leave have got what they wanted.

There are lots of real negatives, primarily that we are already poorer and will get poorer still.

But it is what it is, we can't put the genie back in the bottle. It was a major mistake, but what's done is done.

There was a not insignificant left-wing Brexit (Lexit) vote too. Mick Lynch and co. But I agree the kind of Brexit we've ended up with, is a very right-wing one. But, I guess that's my point. We can't turn the clock back to 2016; but we can hopefully get a more left-wing government soon, and thus a less destructive version of Brexit going forward. I actually found the nation's acceptance of Boris Johnson, and rejection of Jeremy Corbyn in 2019 much more upsetting - a truly socialist government was the thing we desperately needed. But JC was destroyed by Rupert Murdoch and co, and people fell for it 😔
