AIBU?

Would you lie on your bed in the clothes you've been wearing all day?

My dh got home from the dentist yesterday afternoon (he had a wisdom tooth taken out), he was in a bit of pain and discomfort so went to lie down. I went to check if he was ok/needed anything and saw he was lying on our bed fully clothed with the clothes he had on all day. I told him that was disgusting and could he remove them please, but he didn't understand why. He said (via text as he couldn't talk) 'But where have I been sat? The dentist? Where everything is famously clean?' That day he had also been sat in the car, been to the shops, taken our dc to school. If it was me I would always remove jeans etc. and put on pj's or clean leggings/joggers before lying on the bed.

Who is right?

If he was a tradesman then yes I would expect a change but not just normal clothes. He might have been more comfortable changing to lounge wear but if ur in pain he probs just wanted to rest.

At first I thought you meant a random tradesman who just fancied a lie-down on your bed! Grin

I think it’s fine to lie on your own bed in your ordinary clothes (not shoes and not in the bed).

I get what you mean, I'm a bit like that if I've been in the city as just being out makes you grimy but come on he's not feeling well and you can't tell him what to do anyway, that's a bit weird.

On the bed yes.
In the bed no, as it'd be too warm.

How old are you, OP-have you never come across this situation before? Did you not ever spend afternoons with friends sitting on each other’s beds when you were younger?!

I wouldn't think it's disgusting to lie on or in the bed fully clothed.

If someone actually got into bed fully clothed I would worry they were depressed or something, but again hygeine wouldn't be a concern.

What do you think is on his clothes that is so bad? If he hasn't been anywhere dirty or exercising/ sweaty etc., I honestly can't see a problem.

You're being ridiculously OTT. Your poor husband. Do you have other OCD-style behaviours? This is really not normal.

I'm in my 30's.

Yes of course! I suppose as I've got older (and after Covid), I'm a bit more aware of germs etc.

Your own kitchen cloth and the coins in your purse will carry more pathogens than a coat that's touched a toilet. Our skin is covered in bacteria, always.

These things are known to be dirty, hence washing/changing cloths regularly and washing hands after handling money. And not rubbing coins around on the bedsheets. I’m not sure what your point is.

OP, surely you were perfectly capable of changing the bed linen if you felt that strongly? Please don't tell me you're yet another one of the filthy people on here that never clean carpets or change their sheets and instead have a bunch of ludicrous rules to follow?

Haha this is bonkers. I regularly lie on the bed in my clothes. If it’s chilly I also get under the covers in my clothes. My clothes aren’t dirty. I never even realised it was a thing not to do! My dog also gets on the bed with me, although I do draw the line there and he stays on top of the duvet!

YABU. And if I'm feeling rubbish, I will also get into bed fully clothed for a nap, as will DH. I've never once thought about taking off my clothes before lying on the bed!

I think it's fine. I don't walk around the house with my shoes on.

Having said that, it's not going to make you unwell if someone wears shoes in the house, either. Floors can be cleaned. It's a personal preference.

I lie on my bed in my clothes. Why not? I sit on the sofa in my clothes. I sit on the dining room chairs in my clothes. It would be ridiculous to have a problem with this.

The point is that they don't clean them regularly, I assume.

Is there any evidence that anyone has ever been unwell because shoes were worn in the house, bedding wasn't changed very frequently (assuming normal levels of soiling), clothes were worn in bed, suitcases were put on the bed?

I generally don't have shoes in the house and do change my bed, but only because I like things to look clean, not because I fear terrible consequences if I don't. Normal amounts of dirt and germs are good for us.

Do you think anyone ever got ill because someone rubbed a coin on a bedsheet?

No, they're not. I think it's fine but I take my shoes off when I come in. Sometimes I "have" walked in with my shoes on and thankfully no one died.

So do you never lie on the bed Op, have a special "lying on the bed" outfit or always strip off & get in the bed?

Report
Somethingneedstochange · 23/09/2022 12:08

Unless his clothes are obviously dirty I don't see the issue. My son (severe autism) has a thing about messing up a made up bed. I've given up making our beds after getting up. He goes from one to the other lying in them and messing them up.😂😂😂
