Would you lie on your bed in the clothes you've been wearing all day?

My dh got home from the dentist yesterday afternoon (he had a wisdom tooth taken out), he was in a bit of pain and discomfort so went to lie down. I went to check if he was ok/needed anything and saw he was lying on our bed fully clothed with the clothes he had on all day. I told him that was disgusting and could he remove them please, but he didn't understand why. He said (via text as he couldn't talk) 'But where have I been sat? The dentist? Where everything is famously clean?' That day he had also been sat in the car, been to the shops, taken our dc to school. If it was me I would always remove jeans etc. and put on pj's or clean leggings/joggers before lying on the bed.

Who is right?

Never been a rule for me because I grew up with it, it's just what my parents did so we did too. Don't remember ever having an explanation or reason for it and not particularly worried about any sort of germs (I mean I work in a hospital!) but I do feel cleaner if I change into 'house clothes' as well as being comfier and I do keep my house very clean so that may affect our habits too (and for those worried about our immune system glad to say it is perfectly fine and we also have 3 pets in the house). Sofa and stuff is ok if the clothes are relatively ok - its a no no if public transport though, I find those buses vile but I do not impose it onto anyone, I just feel yuck myself on those clothes and so it happens to be my DP is the same so it helps.
I see many people here using the bed during the day, we hardly do that mainly due to lack of time tbh! So bed is usually only used at night hence there are no issues about whether we are clothed or not.
For everyone asking what kind of germs we think will go in the bed, that's not the point. We just feel cleaner in ourselves and in bed if we don't use clothes that have been out and about as honestly not everyone follows basic hygiene and I do consider the bed a unit so it would be the same whether on/in the bed. Also if I had been to the shop and back I wouldn't consider them being dirty but again as it is a habit I don't really think whether I need to get changed or not, that would be very complicated, we just do it out of habit and then it covers all situations and it's not a chore.
Seriously, same as people here have never thought about getting changed, we never think about not. Yes maybe it takes us 5min extra per day but that doesn't make us so crazy I think. It definitely doesn't feel complicated, or a chore, or do we ponder about it and definitely not stress about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t mean to be rude, but what a lot of garbled nonsense. I’m none the wiser after all those paragraphs, what your system is and the rationale for it. And I wonder what ‘cleaner in ourselves’ means. Never mind….

reading this thread on the toilet 😂 and got to thinking- do people shower and change after going to the loo as well?

your arse has touched a toilet seat, which others have (even if your own family) and will have germs from flushing, general air contact etc. when you pull your clothes up those germs will transfer to your “fresh” pj’s or whatever, plus again whatever germs have been aerosolised from your poo/wee/arse area. Then you’re going to sit on your clean bed or sofa!

same with preparing food, wash your chicken, spray salmonella all over yourself and the kitchen, then go and sit on the sofa!

most everyday “germs” are completely harmless. You aren’t going to make yourself ill by not changing into clean clothes every 5 minutes.

my mum does the 5 changes a day thing, but’s because she won’t leave the house unless she’s wearing a “naice” outfit. Which is deemed “too naice” for wearing indoors, it needs “keeping for best”, so she changes into whatever outfit she deems appropriate for the indoor activity she is doing. Gardening is old trousers, if someone might come round it has to be comfy but still classy, if it’s evening and it’s guaranteed no visitors dressing gown etc etc. much of it is the opposite to the pp’s too, it’s from the days where washing was a pain so designed to keep “going out” outfits so you get multiple wears before washing.

I feel the same way tbh it's gross the amount of germs transferred from outside into our homes.. everyone in my house hold knows to put fresh PJ's or clothing on if there not planning on going back out.. common sense.. some of you lot are mad for allowing a someone who's been in dirty public places lay in a bed in the very same clothes they wore out all day..

This doesn't seem a very healthy way of thinking. "Gross"?

He is.

You are unsympathetic and a bit silly. It's not like he's actually in the bed with his clothes on.

I have several loose t shirt dresses which I dress up for work or if at home slob around in. I often just get underwear off and crawl under covers for the night. I’m very clean and hygienic. I don’t need to wash clothes after wearing once unless it’s obvious. IMO you have a little bit of a problem. Actually I’ve never come across anyone who actually changes to have a lie down during the day. Do you change your clothes before you settle onto your sofa?

I’m with you I cant understand what has happened to society that so many people are suffering the anxiety of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Which is what this is. Used to be wash day once a week. Some have the washing machine on constantly at high temperatures which is bad for the environment apart from th other issue.

On top of the covers, ok unless clothes obviously dirty or you've been somewhere dirty. Under the covers, no outdoor clothes. DD sometimes likes to come home and go into my bed to watch TV for a bit and knows she has to strip off!

Some people are ok with putting suitcases on their bed 😱yeuch

Crikey. What imagined outcome of this cross over of external to bed clothes internal to bedclothes? Genuine question.

Iknowforsure1 · 25/09/2022 15:51

OP, you are technically absolutely right, it IS gross. However, I do it for years (too tired, too anxious, you name it) and I never had a problem with health steaming from it. I rarely get infections etc. So no, you are not being unreasonable but also there is such thing as doing what you want in your own home thing, and I kind of prefer the freedom. My DH doesn’t mind though.

Kite22 · 25/09/2022 16:00

I agree with you @SudocremOnEverything
There are some people on this thread that have moved beyond just being a bit bonkers, and must have moved into medically diagnosable territory. I wonder how they must get through life looking at some of the comments on this thread.

Sooverthisnow · 25/09/2022 16:32

It’s hardly surprising people are suffering from more allergies these days- homes have become over sanitised.
Your immune system needs to be regularly challenged with bacteria or it is in danger of focussing on the wrong things.
We have house clothes for the end of the day- not for clean reasons but because the are comfy. They might get washed after several days - I usually sniff them. No doubt I’ll get shot down for that. I must be a right minger!

(Oh and I have crawled into bed in clothes during the day, the sheets of which get changed once a fortnight. My house doesn’t smell and I’m rarely ill 🤷‍♀️)

DeclansAFeckingDream · 25/09/2022 16:37

Sometimes I read posts on a thread that make me wonder how some people get through a day. 🤷 Your poor husband.

Lndnmummy · 25/09/2022 16:44

I wouldn't be happy if my oh stomped in to the bedroom and called me disgusting tbh. Not kind. However, I wouldn't lie down with clothes that I've been out in. But thats because I get changed as soon as I get in. Always. Dh and kids do too. So it wouldn't happen in our house but I'd never dream of barging in on my dh trying to recuperate and call him disgusting.

ispyduck · 25/09/2022 17:33

I completely agree with you OP. My husband is not allowed on the bed with 'outside' clothes. My bed is clean and I can't stand the thought of it being covered in germs.

I know I'm mental and so does he but he does anything for a quiet life 😂

I went through a phase of no outdoor clothes on the settee which I eventually trained myself out of as it was absolutely crazy. Still gives me the creeps though when people but handbags and 'outdoor' things on the sofa. I spend my life secretly spraying things with dettol spray 😬

MsBombastic555 · 25/09/2022 17:47

Bet people who work at sewage works are the cleanest of all when they get home 😂

Oh all those germs which people are picking up making them so ill. There are special research programmes trying to find a cure for”outside germanitis” and they are on the verge of getting a vaccination against it. Have you seen the posters on the underground with warning photographs of people lying on their beds with their “outdoor clothes” on? It’s an absolute epidemic!!!!

Oblomov22 · 25/09/2022 18:56

I hate most supposed MN washing rules. Washing towels so often, showering innumerable times per day. Most of it seems to be over-cleanliness or anxiety. Now you can't lie on your own bed? Sod that.

To the person who says they are using dettol spray a lot - hope you wear a mask MUCH worse for you than “germs”

Personally I couldn’t live with someone where I was ‘allowed’ or ‘not allowed’ to do something (that wasn’t against the law).

There seems to be two types of husbands on MN. They’re either abusive, thoughtless, selfish jerks or amazingly patient saints who put up with their partner’s ‘quirks’ with smiling compliance 🤔

Being too clean is actually really bad for your immune system. Your immune system needs something to do (within reason).

I've always assumed they wear a lot of protective clothing and have facilities to wash and change before they go home. It does seem something of a health hazard otherwise.

Well you should get used to it. Bacteria are everywhere all the time. Mostly harmless and some are beneficial. You are absolutely kidding yourself if you think spraying Dettol on everything is good for you. You are actually doing the opposite of what is healthy for you.
