Should I tip the pizza delivery person?

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:18

Tomorrow I'm ordering pizza from Dominos
I usually leave to our children but I'm doing this
I will be ordering approx 85 quids worth of food for
6 of us inc 2 toddlers. As we are paying online
and IMO the bill is lager than the usal 50-sh after discounts - I will feel bad not tipping the man/woman

A quid is not right but then I'm thinking why should I as I', pay 2 quid (1-99) in delivery and the employer should be paying a proper wage

It will be easier not to tip as paying online but I don't want the delivery person
giving me faces etc though that would make it easier for me later ie not giving a tip

What do you think but I'm almost a 100% cert I won't

(on the odd occasion we eat out we tip 10% but it does hurt.

Maybe the delivery driver is just trying to give their family and family's family opportunities among the river and jets and skyscrapers and people from all over the world too OP, and doesn't have the option for double time on Sundays.

Maybe you should tell them to give it up and move up North instead. That'd be the best tip Wink

CorvusPurpureus · 22/09/2022 21:34

All seems a bit joyless. Delivery pizza is a 'fuck it, it's been a hard day so nuts to cooking' thing here.

If I'd planned my prospective Dominos order 24 hours ahead, I'd be nipping to the supermarket for pizzas, chicken wings & ice cream. Cheaper & no waiting around for lukewarm food.

I just round up to the fiver for all deliveries.

Jalepenojello · 22/09/2022 21:35

Why so many people are desperate for a tipping culture, I have NO idea.

France98 · 22/09/2022 21:37

I never because most takeaways around here charge almost a fiver delivery! No way I'm adding more onto that.

I know a delivery driver who makes a fair bit and it's cash in hand, so not paying tax etc. So swings and roundabouts really.

Intruiged · 22/09/2022 21:39

Surely domino's keep the delivery charge and any online tip? The driver won't see a penny of it.

theworldhas · 22/09/2022 21:40

*Never understand the tipping culture in the UK (obvs different in the US for example)

We have a minimum wage.
Loads of us have minimum wage jobs.
Why are some deemed " more worthy" than others?
We all work as hard as each other

Seems so fucking patronising as well, like a pat on the head or a crumb thrown at you for doing "a good job, well done!" which you should be doing anyway.*

Exactly.

Mum2jenny · 22/09/2022 21:40

OP is just miserable in my opinion as she will not give a decent tip to the delivery driver after spending around £80 for a takeaway. It’s just wrong!

YumYummy · 22/09/2022 21:44

I’d give £3

KiraKiraHikaru · 22/09/2022 21:45

I don’t think I’ve ever tipped anyone in my life!

neighboursmustliveon · 22/09/2022 21:47

I never tip delivery drivers. In fact I hardly ever tip. We live in a country with a national minimum wage. We shouldn't have to tip for just doing their job.

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/09/2022 21:48

@theworldhas Not all minimum wage jobs involve dealing directly with the public.

The public are shit. If I can make someone dealing with shit people all day feel a little bit appreciated because I in turn appreciate that they've not let it break their spirit, then I will.

I'm lucky to earn well above minimum now (still with some elements of service and shit people) but I remember well when I didn't. Tips made my day back then, and an email of thanks makes my day now. I pay both forwards to others when I have the opportunity.

Jourdain11 · 22/09/2022 21:48

How does Ben and Jerry's from Domino's have that special taste vs Ben and Jerry's from the supermarket? Genuinely confused 😀

Phish food, laced with the aroma of cheese and pepperoni grease.

It’s psychological, you just slowly convince yourself of it as you eat it knowing you’ve spent £5.99 on something you can get for £2.50 😂

jesusjoan · 22/09/2022 21:53

I think if you can afford to spend £85 on pizzas then it would be a bit miserly not to leave at least a 2 or 3 quid. Tips can make a world of difference to low wage, gig economy workers, especially in this climate.

Person18885 · 22/09/2022 22:00

I never Tip on principle, places like dominos are overprices as it is and if you tip by card chances are its not going to the driver anyway

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 22/09/2022 22:03

Shop workers have to put up with the public's shit though for minimum wage.
Nobody tips them, do they?
Why some but not others?

Feelinglow27 · 22/09/2022 22:06

This is one of the tightest things I've ever read

Sniffypete · 22/09/2022 22:07

Now domino's charge for delivery, no I don't tip.

AegonT · 22/09/2022 22:16

Surely you can get Dominos for six people down to £40 with offers. 3 large pizzas and maybe some sides.

I tip delivery drivers a flat £2. I only tip a % of the bill in restaurants with waiter service.

WafflyVersatileOohOoh · 22/09/2022 22:21

God, your wife must think you’re a miserable prig.

ByTheGrace · 22/09/2022 22:22

I tip food and grocery deliveries

If you are tipping supermarket delivery drivers, then you might not be doing them a favour. Tesco drivers certainly aren't allowed to accept tips.

Who's that to, am I missing a post as can't see where the OP mentions they have a wife?

RebeccaCloud9 · 22/09/2022 22:27

YABU to spend that much on crappy pizza!

Whoops, previous comment was supposed to be quoting this one!
Meant to say Who's that to, am I missing a post as can't see where the OP mentions they have a wife? under this quote
