Should I tip the pizza delivery person?

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:18

Tomorrow I'm ordering pizza from Dominos
I usually leave to our children but I'm doing this
I will be ordering approx 85 quids worth of food for
6 of us inc 2 toddlers. As we are paying online
and IMO the bill is lager than the usal 50-sh after discounts - I will feel bad not tipping the man/woman

A quid is not right but then I'm thinking why should I as I', pay 2 quid (1-99) in delivery and the employer should be paying a proper wage

It will be easier not to tip as paying online but I don't want the delivery person
giving me faces etc though that would make it easier for me later ie not giving a tip

What do you think but I'm almost a 100% cert I won't

(on the odd occasion we eat out we tip 10% but it does hurt.

@ToGanymedeAndTitan In fairness the OP has told us 4 adults and 2 toddlers present, and that they'll order 4 ice creams. Dominos sell ice cream in pints.

4 pints is a good 18 adult portions of ice cream.

So yeah, nobody needs that much ice cream.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 22/09/2022 21:17

Have literally never tipped a delivery driver since I started using Just Eat and Food Hub. Not even sure it offers the option, and tbh I’ve never even thought of it since I never have cash and that’s why I use them!

Mum2jenny · 22/09/2022 21:18

You are being totally unreasonable to pay that sort of money for what you have ordered. It’s an absolute con, but ppl like you are paying this sort of money for stuff you could cook from scratch for a fraction of what you are paying.
Is this a post boasting about how much money you can afford to piss up a wall???

SalviaOfficinalis · 22/09/2022 21:18

Dominos doesn’t charge for delivery… or at least it doesn’t where we are (the lovely north).

DarkDarkNight · 22/09/2022 21:18

You should tip in my opinion. It’s not their fault Domino’s have started charging for delivery and I bet it isn’t passed on to the driver.

properdoughnut · 22/09/2022 21:14

WTF. No you don't. You're spending £85 on a dominoes order and are ordering chicken wings. They are known for pizza. If you don't want pizza go somewhere else or you're being ripped off.

Their pizza and garlic breads you can't beat them and adding with chicken wings/bites is the icing on the cake. Full of fats/sugar/salt etc and oils its work it every few months

Its a lot cheaper than going to their restuarnt and buying drinks on top and hearing loud people and then it might rain tomorrow then walking the 40 feet to the car in the cold

Thanks I appreciate what you are saying but we dont do an order this big more than 2/3 times year for the 6 of us

Many thanks, appreciate it.

But their ice cream has that certain taste and we save some for the next day.

But we have got all the drinks/etc at home.

This 85 quid-ish inc deliver I only do 2/3 year our don does it 6/8 times a year

For the record we don't throw our money away as we ralrely eat out etc

Thanks again

It's Ben and Jerry's right? You can get that in a supermarket- maybe use your nectar points (though you probably need 10000000 or something) or clubcard points. Then you can use the cash to give the delivery driver £1.58.

She is entitled to spend her money on whatever she wants, don’t be ridiculous.

halfthesun · 22/09/2022 21:20

Yes! My son is a delivery driver ... he is 17 ... he received £2 in tips at the end of his first shift. Says he absolutely did his best.

Ignore me. DH had just informed me that they’ve started charging. £2.50 apparently!!

Yeah I mean I get it. But if you're wanting to save money then just cut out 1 tub of ice cream and give the driver the cash as a tip?

Mum2jenny · 22/09/2022 21:22

Ok to a comment about how she can spend her money how she likes, but then I’d expect her to pay around 5% to the delivery driver as a minimum.
I’d give the delivery driver a minimum of £5 in this scenario and if a good prompt delivery maybe around £8.

Thats so bad. If someone can afford £80+ worth of food delivery they can afford £1 for a tip.

pandy2 · 22/09/2022 21:23

Understand getting the ice cream on the order for convenience but believe me there is no special taste!! It's all made in the same factory Grin

Well, in London they do and I lived in the north and would never go back there as it lacks opputiunty especially for our grandkids.

Though we've been in London for close to 45 years when parents moved over, it never fails to amaze me to go to our local Royal park and see people from all over the world, jsets overhead, the river and look to the life the you have the Shard, post office tower and other big building look slightly to the right or ahead the mas of skyscrapers around Canary Warf - the twin hull boats racing up and down the river

Great stuff but very expensive but a place to live in if you want to work and have opputiunes for your family and familys family

Anyway OP

I don't want the delivery person giving me faces etc I don't think they'd do this.

Dominos are now hassling you for tips, sending an email reminder, guilting you by naming the driver. I replied in feedback, that if you value your staff so much, then pay them a better wage. Dominos aren't cheap by any stretch, they now charge for delivery too.
I've never tipped delivery drivers and places I've worked didn't allow drivers (or anyone) to accept tips.
Really, why is everyone so keen to enable these big businesses to exploit their staff and us.

Exactly

Suzi888 · 22/09/2022 21:25

“Then they should work somewhere else.
Who gets the 1-99 I'm paying for delivery?”
🤔

Yes you should tip the delivery driver.

DH can’t understand anyone ordering a pizza that costs about £2 max and you pay £20🤷🏼‍♀️😂per pizza.

£85 would be easily spent if there are 4 adults, a pizza each and nuggets for children. There’s also desserts, sides, pop….

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/09/2022 21:25

Ben & Jerrys is over £1.10 per tub cheaper in all of the supermarkets than from Ben & Jerrys.

Pop out for it tomorrow the give the delivery driver a fiver and you're squared away.

Let's face it, you wouldn't feel so awkward about this all & having your son answer the door if you didn't know you were being (or were going to appear to be) tight to be spending so much but tipping the driver 0.

If you actually didn't care it wouldn't have crossed your mind.

More to do with principle.

all posts for and agint have helped

For the record, ideally, I'd like to see everyone paid 50 quid an hour but it is what it is.

In mitigation, if I was a regular Dominos guy and saw the same person, I'd tip them a few quid but I'm not

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/09/2022 21:25

*than from Dominos, obviously. My kingdom for an edit button.

pandy2 · 22/09/2022 21:00

You want your son to go to door cos you feel embarrassed... and rightly so - so stingy and mean when you're happy to splash £85 on pizza?!! Is this a reverse and you're a delivery driver to try and highlight how mean some people are??

The fact you feel embarrassed and you want your son to answer the door says it all really !
I hope you enjoy stuffing your face on £85 of pizza and ice cream 🤢

GraveyardStick · 22/09/2022 21:28

If I worked for dominos I’d like to be tipped, equally I understand the arguments that we don’t tip most people in minimum wage jobs so why do some get tips (and some people earning over minimum wage get tipped). You seem adamant you’re not going to tip and lots of people will agree with that decision.

In your position I would buy my Ben and jerrys at a supermarket though, whether I was then going to use the money for a tip or not.

cimena · 22/09/2022 21:29

I tip food and grocery deliveries, normally a fiver. I don’t tip amazon or couriers but now I think I should!

I know plenty of people on min wage don’t get tips but I can’t fix that, I can tip a deliveroo rider though and I reckon that’s better than nothing.

If anyone felt like looking up the concept of ‘negative solidarity’ it’s quite interesting and there’s an awful lot of it on this thread
