Should I tip the pizza delivery person?

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:18

Tomorrow I'm ordering pizza from Dominos
I usually leave to our children but I'm doing this
I will be ordering approx 85 quids worth of food for
6 of us inc 2 toddlers. As we are paying online
and IMO the bill is lager than the usal 50-sh after discounts - I will feel bad not tipping the man/woman

A quid is not right but then I'm thinking why should I as I', pay 2 quid (1-99) in delivery and the employer should be paying a proper wage

It will be easier not to tip as paying online but I don't want the delivery person
giving me faces etc though that would make it easier for me later ie not giving a tip

What do you think but I'm almost a 100% cert I won't

(on the odd occasion we eat out we tip 10% but it does hurt.

Our local Dominos is a 6 minute drive away from us. We tip because 'we appreciate you coming in out in all weathers, struggling to find addresses in the dark, bringing pizza we were too lazy to pick up, and doing so in a timely and cheerful manner'

The same doesn't (necessarily) apply to Tesco and Amazon. Especially the having it delivered to save yourself 12 whole minutes of effort bit.

So how would you explain away the 1.99p in delivery charges?
If you collect a pizza it's free.
So who get the 1-99p?
Are the deliver people paid a min wage, not sure how it works

I don't get deliveries very often so can afford to be a bit generous at times - once a guy came on his bicycle, it was freezing cold and some sleet falling so I gave him £5 - he was young and foreign and started to cry in gratitude Sad

ShandaLear · 22/09/2022 20:48

It wouldn’t cross my mind to tip. I don’t tip the Tesco delivery person, or the Amazon delivery person, or the postman, so how is this different? Is it like a pity tip?

I don't tip those people either, they are in regular employment, not the gig economy.

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/09/2022 20:58

@JamesBondOO7 If we collect a pizza it's 'free' less our petrol & car wear and tear. If they deliver it those costs are theirs, plus business use insurance of course, and a bit of profit no doubt, because they're a business not a charity.

The delivery charge is not equivalent to a tip.

Matlab · 22/09/2022 20:58

Of course you shouldn't tip - you've already paid the £1.99 delivery charge. Only tip if you actually want to, don't get sucked into the whole guilt trip tipping. You do you, who cares what anyone else thinks or does

pandy2 · 22/09/2022 21:00

You want your son to go to door cos you feel embarrassed... and rightly so - so stingy and mean when you're happy to splash £85 on pizza?!! Is this a reverse and you're a delivery driver to try and highlight how mean some people are??

Etinoxaurus · 22/09/2022 21:01

Eugh
Stay classy Hmm

pinok · 22/09/2022 21:01

I’ve worked at dominos and it really does mean a lot to the drivers to receive tips. The pay is even advertised as ‘min wage p/h + tips’ It certainly doesn’t go unnoticed which addresses don’t tip either and some get good/bad reputations as a result. Not uncommon for a nice house to order £100+ worth of pizza then not tip.

Ilostmysocks · 22/09/2022 21:01

Domino's delivery drivers earn more than me! They earn £10 per hour here. I have a professional job (Cornwall)

I do tip other delivery drivers though for local takeaways 😊

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/09/2022 21:02

Ps.. A Ben & Jerrys tub from Dominos is a massive 8ml less than a standard liquid pint, and is almost 5 adults portions of ice cream, so ordering 4 might be overkill 🤷🏻‍♀️

jetadore · 22/09/2022 20:19

Yes you should. They earn fuck all.

Minimum wage? Many earning that work a lot harder

Dominos are now hassling you for tips, sending an email reminder, guilting you by naming the driver. I replied in feedback, that if you value your staff so much, then pay them a better wage. Dominos aren't cheap by any stretch, they now charge for delivery too.
I've never tipped delivery drivers and places I've worked didn't allow drivers (or anyone) to accept tips.
Really, why is everyone so keen to enable these big businesses to exploit their staff and us.

this^^

So what happens to "houses that don't go unnoticed"?

YANBU.
Never understand the tipping culture in the UK (obvs different in the US for example)
We have a minimum wage.
Loads of us have minimum wage jobs.
Why are some deemed " more worthy" than others?
We all work as hard as each other
Seems so fucking patronising as well, like a pat on the head or a crumb thrown at you for doing "a good job, well done!" which you should be doing anyway.

You failed to son that I mentioned that our son orders more takeways in a month that we do in a year and he never tips. He does not tip as he feels like me that the employer should pay a decent wage and if the delivery person is not happy get another job.

When we had a mortgage we worked up to 50 hours a week in OT where we got time nd half or double on Sundays. Why should we supplement the employers of delivery drivers

When we eat out we only tip if its a good service and its often about 10%
but a delivery driver, we don't tip Tesco, Waitrose drivers nor Argos drivers etc so why the pizza guy?

Actually the 50% off works out more expensive - we are only odering 2 large pizzas but lots of chciken wings, lots of garilc bread and 4 icecreams - you only get the 50% off pizza's nothing else so an automatic offer works out cheaper - oh got some sauces as well larger pots -inc the 2 quid delivery

Buy ice cream from the shop. No one needs that much ice cream. Spend the savings on a tip.

Exactly my point too, why some but not others?
There's no sense to it.

True, good post, made me feel better.
A bit like a trip to my hair cut man - I used to tip a pound they gave me funny looks it is eaier now the cut is 19 quid so I say keep the change.

If I was paying cash and the bill was 84 and I gave 85 I'd find it easier to say keep the change but we are paying onlie plus deliver of 2 quid

Aretheyhavingalaugh · 22/09/2022 21:12

Always tip for takeaways, usually a couple of quid.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 22/09/2022 21:13

properdoughnut · 22/09/2022 21:14

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:51

I;ve decided!!!

Again, thanks re the main question if I should tip or not and the extra help re discounts etc. Trust me, i look after our money, but thanks.

Decision - no way am I giving a fiver - pound is two low and finally, the 1-99p I'm paying for delivery has tipped me into nOT to tip the person. I'll ask my son if he can open the door as he is not shy and does not tip. If not I will do it and IMO the principle that Domions should pay a proper wage

Thanks all

WTF. No you don't. You're spending £85 on a dominoes order and are ordering chicken wings. They are known for pizza. If you don't want pizza go somewhere else or you're being ripped off.

Many thanks, appreciate it.

But their ice cream has that certain taste and we save some for the next day.

But we have got all the drinks/etc at home.

This 85 quid-ish inc deliver I only do 2/3 year our don does it 6/8 times a year

For the record we don't throw our money away as we ralrely eat out etc

Thanks again

Four adults and 2 toddlers do not need 4 tubs of Ben and Jerry's after also eating 2 large pizzas loads of chicken wings and garlic bread.

Just trying to think of an easy way to solve the tip dilemma.
