Should I tip the pizza delivery person?

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:18

Tomorrow I'm ordering pizza from Dominos
I usually leave to our children but I'm doing this
I will be ordering approx 85 quids worth of food for
6 of us inc 2 toddlers. As we are paying online
and IMO the bill is lager than the usal 50-sh after discounts - I will feel bad not tipping the man/woman

A quid is not right but then I'm thinking why should I as I', pay 2 quid (1-99) in delivery and the employer should be paying a proper wage

It will be easier not to tip as paying online but I don't want the delivery person
giving me faces etc though that would make it easier for me later ie not giving a tip

What do you think but I'm almost a 100% cert I won't

(on the odd occasion we eat out we tip 10% but it does hurt.

We never tip delivery drivers but now I’m thinking I should..

GrowOneStrawberry · 22/09/2022 20:39

Firstly you can tip online

Secondly. You get 50% off over £35
Even if you ordered 4 large pizzas @ £21 each = £82 - 50% = 41
Make sure you use the right codes

Westfacing · 22/09/2022 20:39

I would tip £5 if ordering £85 worth of pizza.

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:40

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/09/2022 20:37

I know they vary by area but my dominos app currently has 50% off on online orders over £35.

Can't fathom how 4 adults and 2 toddlers would run up an £85 spend 😱

Actually the 50% off works out more expensive - we are only odering 2 large pizzas but lots of chciken wings, lots of garilc bread and 4 icecreams - you only get the 50% off pizza's nothing else so an automatic offer works out cheaper - oh got some sauces as well larger pots -inc the 2 quid delivery

Oh god, they deserve a tip

outtheshowernow · 22/09/2022 20:41

My son works for dominoes and I can tell you it means the world to the delivery drivers to get a pound Everyone who works there think they are overpriced it's not the employees fault

luxxlisbon · 22/09/2022 20:41

Then they should work somewhere else.

lol should poor people just stop being poor too?

What’s the point in this post then? You’re making it seem like you are in this moral dilemma over tipping but you aren’t, you don’t want to tip and you don’t feel bad.
Enjoy ordering twice the amount of food 4 adults and 2 toddlers could reasonably eat but being too cheap to tip.

Many thanks as per above post cheaper via their auto code. plus 1-99 delivery hence no tip

I do tip, particularly if they're the delivery drivers that cycle! . although since covid I have found it annoying to have my food left on the floor for 'contact free deliveries,' If they can't hand the food to me,I'm not bothered about running after them to hand them their tip!

outtheshowernow · 22/09/2022 20:42

Geepee71 · 22/09/2022 20:24

I ordered Domino's online recently and was asked not to tip driver with cash and instead to tip online, after delivery.

That isn't right it wouldn't go to the driver

Soubriquet · 22/09/2022 20:43

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:38

Who gets the 1-99 I'm paying for delivery?

I know I said I don’t tip, and I don’t, but I do think your attitude is wrong here

If there were to “work somewhere else” there would be no one to deliver your pizza

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:43

Westfacing · 22/09/2022 20:39

Thanks
I'm now torn between zero, and a couple of quid but certain not 5.
Thanks to all re help with tip if to or not and improving the discount on my order.

Cheaper than eating out and having to encounter loud people and paying sky high prices for drinks on top and then getting wet getting back into the car.

It's not that clear what the YABU and YANBU options for the poll are, so YABU for that. YANBU not to tip, though.

luxxlisbon · 22/09/2022 20:44

and 4 icecreams

This is the weirdest part of the post!
Who gets one of those pints of ice creams per person?
Who does their takeaway order in this much detail the day before?
Why would you so like £30 on Ben and Jerry from domino’s and not pop to Tesco tomorrow??

Westfacing · 22/09/2022 20:44

Then they should work somewhere else

And who would deliver your pizza?

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/09/2022 20:45

Pretty sure the £1.99 is to cover rising fuel costs and vehicle insurances but sure, sub it for a tip that might make a little difference to the driver's day.

Or collect it yourself and save both £1.99 AND the tip quandary.

Ps.. Most of the drivers for takeaways around us DO work somewhere else, they do takeaways in the evenings to try & keep their families heads above water.

They are not pints mate look it up
I plan ahead as I hate who wants what etc - as it is our son and his family i know what we all like and want it's what he orders at his place - you happy with that?

It wouldn’t cross my mind to tip. I don’t tip the Tesco delivery person, or the Amazon delivery person, or the postman, so how is this different? Is it like a pity tip?

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:51

I;ve decided!!!

Again, thanks re the main question if I should tip or not and the extra help re discounts etc. Trust me, i look after our money, but thanks.

Decision - no way am I giving a fiver - pound is two low and finally, the 1-99p I'm paying for delivery has tipped me into nOT to tip the person. I'll ask my son if he can open the door as he is not shy and does not tip. If not I will do it and IMO the principle that Domions should pay a proper wage

Thanks all

This is why American restaurant workers cringe when a table of British tourists is seated.

Yes, you should tip him.

Our local Dominos is a 6 minute drive away from us. We tip because 'we appreciate you coming in out in all weathers, struggling to find addresses in the dark, bringing pizza we were too lazy to pick up, and doing so in a timely and cheerful manner'

The same doesn't (necessarily) apply to Tesco and Amazon. Especially the having it delivered to save yourself 12 whole minutes of effort bit.

I jest you not - as I type the OP that crossed my mid as well ie re tesco's. We have shopping delivered every 6/7 days and we never tip the tesco delivery person and at times the shop is close to 200 quid averaging 140-sh - great post/reminder

Still called an ice cream pint. Look it up mate.

LikeTearsInRain · 22/09/2022 20:54

My understanding is they are employees so are hired on minimum, get a mileage amount per delivery and extra money if they put the domino’s sign thing on top of their car. If tips are given then they get to keep them.

The staff who fill the shelves or serve you at till in the supermarket are also on minimum wage, do people tip them?
