Should I tip the pizza delivery person?

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:18

Tomorrow I'm ordering pizza from Dominos
I usually leave to our children but I'm doing this
I will be ordering approx 85 quids worth of food for
6 of us inc 2 toddlers. As we are paying online
and IMO the bill is lager than the usal 50-sh after discounts - I will feel bad not tipping the man/woman

A quid is not right but then I'm thinking why should I as I', pay 2 quid (1-99) in delivery and the employer should be paying a proper wage

It will be easier not to tip as paying online but I don't want the delivery person
giving me faces etc though that would make it easier for me later ie not giving a tip

What do you think but I'm almost a 100% cert I won't

(on the odd occasion we eat out we tip 10% but it does hurt.

This thread is really sad. Making a stand against employers not paying their staff a decent wage by not tipping doesn't affect the employer in any way. If it wouldn't break the bank to tip someone a quid or two and make them feel appreciated then why wouldn't you? I got left a double tip yesterday because the family had heard the next table being absolute twats with me and refusing to pay their whole bill based on one minor issue. Really made my day that they were so nice!

that is nice, but if you worked somewhere else your manager or business owner would swipe that tip or a percentage of it. It's the downside of paying by card as well, although I know some places insist that cash tips are "shared" (appropriated) too.

Personally I think tips should be for the person you give them to, but I know a lot of MNers disagree with me and think kitchen staff should share in them - I don't, as they are paid more and don't have to deal with entitled customers.

I don't get takeaways delivered but have never tipped a general delivery driver with a parcel. Often they run away before you've even opened the door anyway!

It’s already been explained to you why not, you just don’t like the answer.

Every time you tip you are supporting low wages and poor working conditions. That’s not nice at all, but as long as it makes you feel good 🙄

neslop · 27/09/2022 18:19

DS worked as a take-away delivery driver for a short while after uni, in his experience those in the biggest, fanciest houses were the rudest and least likely to tip. I was always a bit reluctant about tipping before, but after hearing things from his perspective - it really made his day if customers had been generous and even a few £s made a big difference to him - now I always gladly tip because I hope I'm making someone's day a bit brighter 😀

If everybody stopped tipping, it may ultimately affect employers as they would no longer be able to state in the jobs adverts that employee will get tips in addition to their wage. The job wouldn't sound so good and or no people would apply.

No because the reason people take these jobs is because of the hours and shifts and transitory nature. They don't have much choice.

There are other jobs with shifts and a transitory nature.

See the people winging because you never gave a tip I would not worry about their opinions they are just really sad people. If you don't tip that's your right not to and the price of stuff you don't need more expense.
You carry on the way you do things and not worry about what other people think, if you do worry about what these people think it will affect your mental health so what they think who cares and peace to you. 🙏🙏🙏

The OP asked for an opinion and that's what they got. If you don't agree with someone does that make you sad? You sound like a teenager.

wellhelloitsme · 28/09/2022 13:39

@Casper76

If someone doesn't want to hear people's opinions then they presumably wouldn't post on a discussion forum asking for... people's opinions.

I'm sure OP's mental health won't suffer from hearing other people would tip and disapprove of him not doing so. It's very odd you think that would harm his mental health.

ARoyalSubject · 29/09/2022 09:58

As it's such a big order, I would have slipped them a fiver in cash.

Lazy123 · 30/09/2022 17:07

I am currently a delivery driver for dominoes. I make £10ph plus I'm paid £1 for every short delivery and £1.60 for ever long delivery. On top of that I get 20p for every delivery but this is paid with my wage so I'm taxed on that.

Tips are very few and far between these days but I don't expect a tip and I hope anyone I've delivered to has not felt bad about not doing so. They have already paid £2.50 for delivery so to tip on top of that is daft. The £2.50 for the delivery should just go to the driver rather than dominoes themselves.

I probably make between £13 & £14 per hour in total. Hope this helps rather than just people just assuming how it works. Also the job is a piece of piss, you put yourself out for delivery on the touch screen drive 10 mins down the road hand the food over and head back. Hardest part it trying to find the house when it's dark and you can't see the house numbers.

I usually find they are happy with a quick shag. 😂

Lighthearted response to hopefully brighten a rainy day!

Itsnotallblackandwhite · 30/09/2022 19:42

@StarlightLady 😂😂

reminds me of my friend who didn’t have enough for her cab fare back in the day, so flashed her tits to the driver. He let her off (and drove off very quickly at high speed)

I mean, funny, but also risky beyond belief. 😳

You talk about london like its atlantis and the 'north' like its a barren wasteland of unemploymwnt and poverty 😂 Yet your idea of peak culinary exellence is soggy pizza and wings from dominoes and ben and jerrys ice cream.

You plan two days ahead to order a takeaway and are so stressed about being embarrsed about being a tighwad and not tipping a couple of quid that you post on mumsnet. And have I got this right? Planned to send your son to the door or stand their explaning to the fankly uninterested and baffled delivery driver why you didnt tip him.

This might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read.

Tipping is so awkward here in the UK, we don't know how to do it at all.

Caroparo52 · 17/07/2023 12:09

Its a bit like tipping in a restaurant. Give the poor sod a few quid

Anamechangeisasgoodasarest · 17/07/2023 12:25

@Caroparo52 It was almost a year ago so I don't think a tip is really needed!
