Should I tip the pizza delivery person?

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:18

Tomorrow I'm ordering pizza from Dominos
I usually leave to our children but I'm doing this
I will be ordering approx 85 quids worth of food for
6 of us inc 2 toddlers. As we are paying online
and IMO the bill is lager than the usal 50-sh after discounts - I will feel bad not tipping the man/woman

A quid is not right but then I'm thinking why should I as I', pay 2 quid (1-99) in delivery and the employer should be paying a proper wage

It will be easier not to tip as paying online but I don't want the delivery person
giving me faces etc though that would make it easier for me later ie not giving a tip

What do you think but I'm almost a 100% cert I won't

(on the odd occasion we eat out we tip 10% but it does hurt.

I haven’t tipped a delivery driver in about 10 years. Back when it was cash on delivery, I’d say keep the change a bung them a couple of quid. But since ordering on apps came in, I don’t tip.

phaginarelange · 22/09/2022 22:28

Why have you started this thread? Are you the same kind of person who has a server running around like a dick, cater to your every whim, kids trash the table then can't even leave a measly couple of quid to show a little appreciation?

RebeccaCloud9 · 22/09/2022 22:28

And no, if I was paying for delivery I wouldn't tip as well. Their employer should pay them.

I don't tip and wouldn't do any of that
They don't go hand in hand, you know.

Now domino's charge for delivery, no I don't tip.

Reading through a few more new posts - 101% decided, not going to tip for that exact reason - Many thanks.

I did not want to work up to 50 hours a week nor did my wife but we did to make life better for us for a wage and no tips.

The 2 quid I'm paying for delivery and I think our son pays 2-50 it depends on which outlet is used. If the del person gives me a stare I may say 'i hope you get the 2 quid I've paid your employer for the delivery.'

Thanks again all and the majority are in favour of no tip, thanks again

(I would i think tip if i was a regular pizza customer and got the same one or two people)

@ToGanymedeAndTitan My experience as a customer at the till in Next or Asda (for example) has never been made or broken by the attitude / enthusiasm of the member of staff serving me, but my experience over an evening in a restaurant has certainly been enhanced or brought down by the wait staff. (As a table of 4 we once tipped a guy in TGI Fridays nearly 50% of the bill because he brought such joy and laughter to our evening).

I've worked in both retail and food/beverage service for minimum wage and can assure you that for many reasons food/beverage is the harder and often the most thankless, despite being the one where the staff member has the most influence on the customers experience.

As I've said earlier, I very much appreciated tips in those days; and I enjoy passing that on now I'm in a position to.

Its clear from this thread that a lot of respondents have never experienced actually living on the minimum wage in any case.

Anyway enjoy your Pizza & Ice cream OP.

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/09/2022 22:44

And again for the people at the back..

THE DELIVERY CHARGE IS FOR THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH DELIVERY.

You know how petrol's gone up when you go to the pump recently? Same for Dominos 👍🏻 They don't run their vehicles off left-over grease.

A delivery charge is towards petrol, insurance and wear & tear. A tip is appreciation for an otherwise thankless job. They're different things.

I can't believe it's this difficult to understand.

Oinkypig · 22/09/2022 22:48

Everyone loves a bit of rubbish fast food everyone and them but to say they can’t be beaten for their pizza and garlic bread when you live in London is just sad, and surely you could find the ice cream within minimal walking distance as well or just add it to your 6/7 day Tesco order and save some money you say you manage.

Oinkypig · 22/09/2022 22:49

every now and then!!

JamesBondOO7 · 22/09/2022 20:51

I;ve decided!!!

Again, thanks re the main question if I should tip or not and the extra help re discounts etc. Trust me, i look after our money, but thanks.

Decision - no way am I giving a fiver - pound is two low and finally, the 1-99p I'm paying for delivery has tipped me into nOT to tip the person. I'll ask my son if he can open the door as he is not shy and does not tip. If not I will do it and IMO the principle that Domions should pay a proper wage

Thanks all

Wow you’re a gem

Someone asked above how they get paid. Ds(18) works for dominos PT as a delivery driver while at uni.

He gets min wage £6.83/hr. He gets his rota the week before telling him his start time, days he is working varies every week. Finish time can be anything from around 90mins to 6hrs later depending on how busy it is, they pay to the minute. He only gets paid for what he works until sent home. Could be sent home at 7 or kept in until 11pm or later. Asking for a Friday or Saturday night off is unpopular or denied.

He uses his own car and fuel. They pay for 3rd party business insurance only. So if he has an accident while working that is his fault he could lose his car.

They get £1.10 per delivery to cover fuel/car wear and tear, much less than dominos is now charging its customers. £1.40 for deliveries at a nearby village that is 7 miles away. The delivery money he gets in cash on the night, it covers fuel but not much more. He gets an extra 20p (I think) per delivery if he puts the sign on his car.

Wish he would get a different PT job where it was less risky (for his car), he was paid fairly (for using/wear and tear on his own car) and knows his hours so he would know if he would get paid or if he could plan his social life after work. But he is 18 so up to him to change if he wants to!

Because people pay online now, most nights he gets no tips at all, surprised so many on here say they do tip 🤔. He is over the moon if he gets one. He got a tenner off someone once and was so happy!

LoveBluey · 22/09/2022 23:05

I don't ever tip delivery drivers and sometimes feel a bit awkward but just generally don't have cash. Would happily round up/say keep the change but I'm paying online so can't do that. I would find it odd to hand over a £1 or £2 coin to an adult. I think it's just the awkwardness of giving someone a coin. I give my hairdresser a fiver and somehow as that's a note it's less awkward. I feel a bit bad reading the stories of struggling delivery drivers so maybe I need to just do it.

newsaint · 22/09/2022 23:10

A small tip for delivery drivers is good I think.

They are the only people I tip, along with taxi drives and waiters.

I follow the 10% rule in a restaurant, but for taxis and delivery drivers I just usually give a couple of quid. (If they dont like it, they can get fuck all instead and see how they like that - but, tbh, anytime I have tipped people they have always been very thankful).

I don’t often order takeout, but when I do I always tip £1, I don’t find it embarrassing to do that. The delivery guys always seem to appreciate my small token of appreciation. I rarely order over £20 worth of food though, so it’s only around a 5% tip.

FruitPastilleNut · 22/09/2022 23:14

A few years ago the shit hit the fan financially and DH did deliveries for the local kebab house for a few months on weekends. He hated it but we were on our uppers.

Trust me, no takeaway delivery driver would be upset at a £1 tip. The wages are shit and no one dreams of driving around on Friday nights taking people their food. It's a crap job, usually taken in desperation ime.

If every customer had tipped DH 'only' a quid, it would have meant an extra £35 a night to him which would have made an absolutely massive difference to us at the time. However the majority of customers don't tip at all - and would stand and wait impatiently whilst DH counted out their £0.30 change from a £69.70 order.

I usually tip takeaway delivery drivers a fiver now...although I appreciate this is more than most and only because of DH's experience.

Chillywilly93 · 22/09/2022 23:19

I rarely tip for takeaways because I feel that takeaways are expensive enough, but if I was ordering that much stuff I might tip £5 or something just for the hassle of carrying it all up my stairs. Carrying my weekly £12 pizza up the stairs? no tip

Yeah well it happens a lot I can tell you. If a server goes out of their way to ensure you have a good couple of hours and you can afford it then why wouldn't you leave a couple of quid?

DillDanding · 23/09/2022 00:00

Some right old meanies on here. Give them a tip ffs. They earn crap money.

saying ‘dominos should pay them more’ does not justify being tight.

People keep saying this, but seemingly can't answer why they'll tip some minimum wage workers /min wage workers with the public but not others.

It’s a cultural norm. As you well know.

UnwantedOpinionBelow · 23/09/2022 00:58

We are in England and have a National Minimum Wage. I don't tip anyone. If you are going to tip delivery drivers, you should also be tipping retail workers, warehouse operatives and anyone else on the minimum wage.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 23/09/2022 01:05

It’s a cultural norm. As you well know.
That's still not an answer, though is it?
I'm well aware that it's a "cultural norm" but really all that boils down to is "this is the way that it's always happened, so this is the way it's always got to be?
Even though it doesn't make sense in the age of national minimum wage?

DonnaBanana · 23/09/2022 01:40

This. In America it is very natural to give a dollar but with coins it feels silly. We need pound notes!

Onesailwait · 23/09/2022 02:09

I've been living in North America for far to long. Tipping is absolutely expected. Standard is at least 15% & you get the side eye if it's less than 20%. That's for everything from restaurant servers to hair and nail salons. I would tip $10 at least for that pizza order

That's just it though, it's different in the US
In the UK, you have a minimum wage of about £9.50 an hour
It doesn't make sense to tip some but not others anymore m
