24th September - dooms day... what?!

So we are currently away on holiday, just spoken to friends back home who asked if we had heard about this viral 'news' (I put that lightly)

Apparently on 24th September, there is going to be a large, catastrophic world event in which everybody will remember exactly where we are and what we were doing at that exact moment.

Does anybody else know anything about this?! Maybe I'm just blissfully unaware!

💔💔💔💔💔🥲worried sick

well let’s think about this logically, if Putin was going to blow up the world he wouldn’t put it in his diary and let us all know about it. If a New Zealand volcano was going to blow, again, it wouldn’t choose to do it on a particular day. And so on and so on.

This is grade A bullshit I promise you, and anyone and everyone knows this. Come join the thinking masses in ignoring this total and utter nonsense!

If it's on social media, it must be true. Was going to sort my autumn/winter clothes this weekend...guess no need to bother now 😂

Do we have a time for this? I dont mind if it means I don't need to do my ironing but I'll be annoyed if I miss my lie in.

I have a soft play party to take child to on Sunday. So at least I won't have to survive that!

Well according to Google September 24th is National punctuation day. I'm not sure it can get any more exciting than that!

Maybe all the Mumsnetters with husbands with very important roles who knew the Queen was dead before anyone else did, including most of her next of kin and the Prime Minister, can help out here?

I always know what I’m doing on a Saturday, washing and cleaning.

Twin towers was predicted by broadly zero psychics and little intelligence leakage, even indirectly by flying schools training pilots who seemed to have little interest in taking off or landing, it seems. Not at the level of doomsday but memorable even for those not involved. Disaster prediction must have improved.

Strange that neither the BBC or the Daily Mail have picked it up - surely it would be prime Mail material, sad face picture and all.....

Hadn't seen anything but it looks like another bs random date picked for the end of the world... just bought DHs birthday gift for the weekend after though so I'll be livid if that's money wasted.

Sigh. No. Think about it on one level - what is "doomsday"? Are we talking annihilation of the planet (unlikely), the universe (v. unlikely), the human race ? Philosophically, what does it mean? Religiously? Or scientifically?

But more to the point. It's more TikTok muppetry based on a German politician misspeaking about the invasion of Ukraine. He was meant to say "24th February will live in our memories". He said "September" (presumably because we are, in fact, in September, and Earth Wind and Fire wrote a BANGING song about the month). You can't predict volanic eruptions or earthquakes with much accuracy so any dates would be a time period, not a specific date. Moreover, the time period would likely be months or years because it's a very difficult science to get right.

Oh yeah and some Simpsons fans have hopped on board to fudge some numbers and try and make it match up.

If more people read science for fun instead of scrolling TikTok we might bring back a semblance of critical thinking instead of silliness.

Better not be. I have tickets for Bocelli on Sunday and I have been holding them for over a year. I shall be most annoyed if a world shattering event gets in my way.

Google is your friend here. A couple of clicks tells me that a German politician misspoke when talking about the Russian invasion and said everyone would remember sept 24th when they meant Feb 24th, the day of the invasion. Then conspiracy theorists ran with it.

I bet they did. 🙄

You know what, if Saturday is the end of the world, so be it. Next week was going to be hell for me at work anyway.

My only concern though is if everyone's going to remember where they were at that moment, the event itself might not be all that bad? I mean if say Japan is wiped off the map by a tsunami or giant lizard, it'll be memorable and shocking, but life on this side of the planet will just go on.

I’m guessing you don’t live in Japan 😂

Can’t be true. Because the world ended in 2011. I do wish people would stop all this crap.

I'm feeling quite edgy again atm, logically I know you're all right though it's an unlikely thing that we couldn't do anything about.

I don't think this is true. The caravan park we are going to wouldn't have taken bookings for this weekend if the world is ending. They could at least refund us the Sunday now or give us a discount since we are all going to die. May complain to their head office about this.
