Holly and Phil

Apologies if there are other threads on this. How do we feel about it all? I don't particularly like a pile on but it seems like the tide has finally turned on these two. There was a time when everyone seemed to love them and their 'oh look we've turned up to a This Morning still pissed from an awards ceremony' was funny at the time. But I think it's gone to their heads and they've become more and more arrogant.

The queue jump situation for me was a clear sign of them thinking they are special, for want of a better phrase. Queuing showed dedication and respect but they just bypassed that. And the weak excuses since haven't helped at all. I see now Holly is consulting lawyers. It must be difficult for them to go on air knowing there's so much public bad feeling against them but I can't help but feel like they've had it coming for a while....

Anyone else?

The queue jumping is just a red herring, I think it is a convenient minor infraction that has been been used to vent against the insufferably perma smug giggling self appointed king and queen of day time TV. Holly could probably survive this insofar as going on to other projects where I think people have had enough of 'Brave Phil' and his PR team.

This

I stoppedwatching This Morning years ago because I couldn't stand it. There's something off about them sitting there making an actual living (and a very good one) by sitting on a sofa in front of a camera, chatting about how much fun they're having at all their glitzy parties and discussing the latest fashion trends, while the country faces a cost of living crisis and more people than ever can't afford to eat.

James o Brien recently did a show on LBC about their spin the wheel competition in which viewers could win the chance to have their energy bills paid for three months. He commented on how 'off' it was, and I think he or one of his callers said it was all a bit 'hunger games' - all the impoverished citizens tuning in to watch the wealthy show hosts present an upbeat programme where the prize of a 'fun' competition is something that is actually essential to stay alive. And what about all the other poor souls who can't afford to pay their energy bills but weren't lucky enough to win the competition?

Like I said, I lost patience for these two and their show a while ago and I think this is the least of their crimes. Having said that, the excuse about them needing to go in to do a segment is a bit weak. There was a live stream on YouTube where everyone could watch. Why did presenters need to be given a VIP pass to go in and film it?

ImAvingOops · 22/09/2022 14:04

@LarryBlackmonsCodpiece it was definitely Eamonn who said that Holly is always in tears.

Raddix · 22/09/2022 14:07

They don’t work Fridays and there’s no evidence of any tv segment that they’ve produced. It’s clear they weren’t working. People aren’t as angry about the skipping as they are about the lying. Yes other people skipped the queue but they didn’t lie about it and try to pretend they were at work.

ImAvingOops · 22/09/2022 14:09

Must be a bit awkward for Ruth working on ITV, with Eamonn's obvious dislike

worriedniece · 22/09/2022 14:10

Do they have to work together? I wondered if Holly had to support Phil with his coming out because if he goes down, so does she? The whole "my best friend" thing that always comes out is so grating

thaegumathteth · 22/09/2022 14:19

@LarryBlackmonsCodpiece Eammon literally says after her 'this top to the bottom it's all interconnected' . Her top to bottom comment was about This Morning which she linked to ITV before Eamonn said what I've just quoted. So I'd suggest before being so rude you fact check.

red4321 · 22/09/2022 14:19

It's rather like Partygate. Admit you did it, apologise and wait for the furore to subside. The faux excuses are just fanning the flames.

Whoever used the word vacuous to describe them is spot on. Holly comes across a complete airhead so should be thankful her husband has some leverage at ITV. In fairness, there's plenty of presenters in that category but the irony is that Holly doesn't have the self-awareness to realise that.

I have zero sympathy given they've got away with treating crew and associates so poorly in the past. Rather at odds with their sickly sweet tv persona.

LarryBlackmonsCodpiece · 22/09/2022 14:20

ImAvingOops · 22/09/2022 14:04

@LarryBlackmonsCodpiece it was definitely Eamonn who said that Holly is always in tears.

But Clare Muldoon said some of the other stuff you quoted as Eammon saying. Don’t worry they’ll all arses anyways & I’ve spent too much time on this already.

ForeverbyJudyBlume · 22/09/2022 14:31

They were doing their jobs, their producers asked them to be there - Mumsnet heroine Caitlin Moran jumped the queue. Is everyone demanding she be sacked? The vileness of so many of these posts basically saying it's fine because they deserve to be taken down a peg just shows what a bitter nation we've become

Lovetogarden2022 · 22/09/2022 14:32

I think it's OTT but a lot of my mum friends who used to watch This Morning whilst they were on maternity leave etc went off Holly and Phil last year and I think they should have quit whilst they were ahead. If I was Holly (who's had a few offers from other companies) I'd have quit with Ruth and Eamonn and then the show could have had a much needed full makeover. I also can't stand Phil - the stuff with the kid (he was just 18 and still in school!) he was "allegedly" having an affair with was shocking. I know someone who was at the same school as the lad and it had been going on for a long time.

ImAvingOops · 22/09/2022 14:36

@LarryBlackmonsCodpiece I only quoted Eamonn as saying that 'Holly is always in tears'.
Then I said that to be fair I would be in tears if my highly paid job was under threat - I never attributed that to EH.

the80sweregreat · 22/09/2022 14:38

I'm sure lots of celebs and others all jumped that queue at some stage.
They were probably given a pass by their friends who are MPs or other well knowns.
The backlash is because people don't like the presenters. The way I deal with it is don't watch it. It's drivel mostly anyway.

red4321 · 22/09/2022 14:38

Isn't that the point of 'karma is a bitch'? If you treat people poorly, you're opening yourself up to them taking revenge when the opportunity arises. By all accounts, they're pretty hideous to their colleagues and it's made worse when there's a power imbalance.

LarryBlackmonsCodpiece · 22/09/2022 14:52

@thaegumathteth @ImAvingOops @ParrotsAteThemAll apologies to you all, have rewatched & Eammon is agreeing with Clare Muldoon also repeating some of what she says, Clare Muldoon also said something about 600k job which looked like you were quoting Eammon as saying it. I probably need to go to Specsavers, not be so much of a pedant & to stop worrying about quotations marks as much.

Fair enough

ImAvingOops · 22/09/2022 15:06

No worries @LarryBlackmonsCodpiece. I probably should have used proper quotation marks

BlueFlowerBlouse · 22/09/2022 15:06

Who's her husband?

What is the 'ITV clique'?

What is really going on behind the scenes at ITV right now, does anyone have any insider gossip?

ForeverbyJudyBlume · 22/09/2022 15:15

Gosh, have they treated every one of the 10s of thousands signing that petition badly? None of us you know a thing - you're all basing this on hearsay and pure spite.

itsgrownbacknow · 22/09/2022 15:23

If they did a segment for This Morning then I don’t know what else people would expected them to do. If for a segment assuming there would also be camera people/crew etc

The issue for me is that they justified it by saying they were there to show the scenes for all those who couldn't go. But the wall to wall news footage was already doing that

Cillery · 22/09/2022 15:42

WimpoleHat · 22/09/2022 08:20

I don’t see anyone complaining that MPs like Jacob Rees Mogg got to skip the queue and take (some of) his kids.

Much as I loathe Rees Mogg, there is a difference. MPs were explicitly allowed into the VIP line with 4 guests. They’ve all sworn an oath to (and worked for, I suppose) the Queen. And JRM is on the Privy Council and will have met her on numerous occasions (let’s not go into the lying to her for this purpose, but he will have known her personally).

Holly and Phil? There for “professional purposes”? You’re having a laugh. Or it was a stunt (“let’s do a segment in poor taste”) which has backfired. Well - them’s the breaks in showbiz…..

i can well see the point of MPs being allowed special access in that it would create a further security headache if they had been in the queue. Don’t forget we have had two MPs (Labour and Tory) assassinated in recent years. It only takes one nut case!

It’s not just Phill and Holly, the whole show in itself and those who produce it have a massively inflated sense of it’s importance. Reminds me of when This Morning kept going during lockdown and glowed about how it was because it’s deemed an ‘essential service.’ Just laughable. No one would have given a flying fuck had they gone off air for a few months. Similarly, no one needed the shows presence by the Queen’s coffin. It’s a tv magazine, they are not even close to being a news program. It’s just mindless and easy watching daytime TV, their idea of being anything more than that is hilarious.

@ForeverbyJudyBlume Caitlin Moran has confirmed she was part of the press pack though (she mentions this in a piece she wrote for The Times last weekend). I understood it to mean she didn’t ‘jump the queue’ as such, but that she was part of the press group at the lying in state so she could report on it for the articles she writes.

100% agree with this. ^
