To let 13 year old dress like a drug dealer??

DS is 13 and suddenly has taken an interest in ‘fashion’ which mostly seems to be dressing in all black sports logos and puffa
jackets. Nike trainers, puma joggers, north face hoody - you get the idea.

oh, and calling us ‘fam’ every frigging minute,
innit bruv.

given that he’s a white, MC kid, in a MC area at a MC school ( state but uniform with tie/blazer/shirt etc) with all that comes with that, I think it’s annoying/amusing and that he’ll grow out of this fake ‘street’ phase.

DH on the other hand thinks that he’s dressing. like a drug dealer and we should go buy him some Boden or something.

AIBU to just let 13 year old to dress how he likes??

My nearly 13-year-old daughter has been privately educated since she was 4 and her main hobby is equestrian show jumping, but she speaks and looks more thuggish than some gang members from London estates. I can tolerate the look, but the "fam, bruv, calm, pressed" drive me insane!! She also keeps saying "MUMs" when talking to her friends (whatever the f that means because apparently it does not actually mean mother). I keep telling her that I've wasted a fortune on private education and she sounds worse than her cousins who are actually in rough state schools but speak much nicer than her!

I bet

‘You must be terrified every time you encounter a teenager these days.’

I’m really not. I’m not terrified by the posturing of any kids. I wasn’t ‘terrified’ of them when I was a teen either.
theres also a lot of teens around who don’t dress or talk like that too so…

Your son's turned into Ali G, which is a parody of exactly what he is doing.

Oh and I hate fam bruv etc they are very cringeworthy.

Textboxmm · 22/09/2022 08:23

Still, he’s gone off to school with his giant inflatable coat on over his blazer and it’s warm! Up to this point he’s been refusing to wear a coat to school at all…

I am related to a man who I still consider to be "such a sweet boy" (I am approx. a decade older than him). He has always wanted to be a tough boy and I have never had the heart to tell him that the the most pathetic people in this world are people who desperately want to be cool.
Oh, bless him. I remember when he got that tattoo with a Chinese symbol. He probably couldn't place China on a map if you removed the writing. When he dyed his hair black he really looked like a very cheap male prostitute catering to other males. Luckily, he has never dyed it that colour again.

What a very odd thing to say.

Textboxmm · 22/09/2022 08:57

@wellhelloitsme thats what I thought.

Well thanks for telling me that my older daughter dresses like a drug dealer 🤷🏻‍♀️
Get the stick out of your arse! Plenty of “ordinary” teens dress that way.
More than wear Boden 😭

You clearly needed to hear it from someone.

MarshaBradyo · 22/09/2022 07:20

I bet

I had the very naïve and misguided belief that by sending my daughter to private school she would learn to speak more like the late Queen and less like Ali G. How wrong I was! If I were to do it over again, she would definitely go to the school across the road. She also wears Nike Pros and crop tops, which I have read on another thread is also considered to be the uniform of gangsta teens 🤦‍♀️

Nagado · 22/09/2022 09:59

maybe I will go down the ‘famalam’
route and see where it gets us!

Can you do it in a posh accent, like the Armstrong & Miller sketches.

Textboxmm · 22/09/2022 10:04

@Nagado maybe I’ll give it a go! I’m not English so might struggle with sounding posh!

I hear you OP, we’ve gone full circle this year from ds2 wearing full Nike tech fleece tracksuit and a man bag outfits, to him now favouring baggy jeans and Ralph Lauren button down shirts. He’s literally gone from Ali G to a young Prince William. Ds1 favours ‘vintage’ sportswear from Depop and Vinted, has grown a beard and now looks like Harry Enfield’s Scouser character.

I wore some hideous outfits in my youth, so we’re just letting it play out 😊

Go for Morningside or Posh Borders.

This is word for word what my daughter tells me 🤣🤦‍♀️Drives me insane!

XelaM · 22/09/2022 11:16

Also... "It's not that deep fam" (usually when I remind her to do her homework for the 1500th time

Chocolatesandroses · 22/09/2022 11:34

@Textboxmm not sure joggers are low enough , normally they have them a lot lower 🙄

Textboxmm · 22/09/2022 11:47

@Chocolatesandroses oh great, really looking forward to looking at his pants all day long…FFS

He'll be doing that jiggling thing with his hands in his pockets that they do.

Goldenbear · 22/09/2022 12:56

As another PP said it is not 'all' teenagers, mine is older so 15 but my son and his friends would not be seen in this stuff they prefer Urban Outfitters, Uniqlo, retro market for Levis and labels but 90s early 00s versions. Usually Nike Airs on feet, all boys bar one have floppy hair, all have curly but it is a coincidence.

edwinbear · 22/09/2022 13:14

I don't understand the floppy hair thing. DS keeps insisting he needs to go to the barbers, not the one that will cut his hair for £10, he HAS to go to the fancy looking one that costs twice as much. Whenever he comes back though, I can see the back and sides have had a trim, but the top keeps getting longer and longer. It looks an absolute state and I swear is the cause of all the spots on his forehead!

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 22/09/2022 13:17

ha ha ha ha, reminds me like my lad who now at 17 didnt start this phase until 15. It hasnt changed much yet.....good luck. Next step is Stone Island and CP Company

pinkpotatoez · 22/09/2022 13:18

So cringe when teens that are clearly middle class and have never been on 'the streets' a day in their lives start talking and acting as if they are involved in a street gang, most would shit themselves if they so much as saw a drug dealer😂 yanbu
